11l Mill,
[From the LouLvillu Jourual.]
Pulpit Eloqncuor.
The day was declining—the broczo in its gleo
Had Icli the t.iir bloudoins to siug on the .- a,
As tho suu in its gorgeousne**, reliant au.l still,
Dropped down like agew rrom the bow of the hill;
One tremulous star in tho glory of June
Camo out with a smile aud sat down by the m xm.
As she graced her blue throne with the pride of a
queen,
Tho smilos of her love’lne.’s gladdened tho scene.
The scene was enchanting! in distance away
Rolled the foam croatud waves of thu Chesapeake boy,
While b&Lhing in moonlight tho village was seen
With the church in tho distance that stood on the
green;
Tho soft-sleeping meadows lay brightly onrolJed,
With their mantles of verdure and blossoms of gold,
And the oarth in her beauty, forgetting to grieve,
Lay asleep in hor bloom on the bosom of eve.
A light-hearted child, I had wandored away
From tha spot whore my footsteps had gambolled oil (
day;
And free a* a bird’s was the soug of my soul,
As I heard tho wild waters exultiugly roll;
While lightening my heart as I sported aloug,
With bursts of low la i liter and snatches of song,
I struck in tho pathway half worn o’er tho sod
By the feet that went up to tho worship of God.
As I traced it? green wiudiuga, a murmur of prayer J
With tho hymn of tho worshippers rose on the air,
And drawn by the links of its sweetness along,
1 stood unobserved in tho midst >f the throng.
For awhile my young spirit still waudored about
With tho birds, and the winds, that were sighing with
out;
But birds, waves, and z-phyrs, wero quickly forgot
In one angel-liko being that brightened tho spot.
In stature majestic, apart from the throng,
lie stood in his beauty, the them.* of my song !
His cheek pale with fervor—tho blue orbs above
Lit up with tho spleudors of youtn and of love,
Yet the heart-glowing rapture that beamed from those
eyes
Seemed saddened by sorrow, and chastened by sighs,
As if the youug heart in its bio .in had grown cold
With its loves unrequited, its sorrows untold.
Fuch language us hia I may never recall,
But his theme was sal vutiou—salvation to all—
And tho souls of a thousand in ocstacy hung
On the manna like sweetness that dropped from bis
tongue.
Not alone on the car his eloquence stoic;
Enforced by each gesture, it sunk to the soul.
Till it seemed that the augei had brightened the end
And brought to each bosom a message from God. i
Ho spoke of the Saviour—what pictures h 1 drew !
The scenes of ids sufferings rose clear on iny view—
Tho cross—the rude cross, where ho suffered and died;
The gush of bright crimson that flowed from his side ;
Tho cup of his sorrows—the wormwood and gull;
The darkness Hint mantled the earth as u pall .
The garland of thorn-’ uu l flic dcmou-likc crows
Who knelt as they scoffed him, Hail, Kim: f; th
Jews !”
He spoke, and it seemed that his statue-like form
Expanded and glutted, ns his spirit grew warm ;
His tone so impassioned—so melting his air.
As touched with compassion ho ended in prayer;
His hands clasped above him—hi? blue orbs up
thrown,
Still pleading for sins that were never his own,
While that mouth where such sweetness ineffably
clung,
Still spoke, though expression had died on his tongue.
OGod ! wlmt emotions the speaker awoke!
A mortal L >ocm -d—y. t a deity *p.k.-;
A man—yet so fur from humanity riven;
rin earth—yet so closely connected with heaven ‘
How oft in my fancy Ive pictured him there
As In* sto *1 in that triumph of pa -i -n and pray r,
With his eyes do lin rapture—their transient < -
cl ipso
Miulo bright by tho smiles that illumined bislips.
There’s a charm in delivery—a magical art
That thrills like a kiss, from tin* lip to the heart;
’Tis tho glance—tho expression the well chosen
word,
By whose magic tho depths of the spirit are stirred;
The smile—thu mute gesture- the sonl-startlin ‘
pause,
Tho eye’s sweet expression, that melts while it nwua—
Thu lips soft persuasions, its musical tone:
O such was the charm of that eloquent ono!
The time is long past—yet how dearly defined
That bay, church, and Tillage tloat up on my mind ;
I sec amid acuretln* moon in hor pride,
With tho sweet little trembler that sat by her side l
1 hear tho blue waves, us she wanders along,
Leap up in their gtudm—s and sing her n snug,
And I tread in the pathway half worn o’er the sod
My the feet that went up to tho worship of God.
The time is long past—yet what visions I see!
Tho past, thu dim past, is tlu* present to mo ;
I am standing once more ’mid that hoart stricken
throng,
A vision floats up—’tis the theme of my song—
All glorious and bright us a spirit <.f air,
Tho light, like a haJu encircling bis hair,
As I catch the same accents of sweetness and love,
He whispers of Jesus, and points us above.
How sweet to my heart is the picture I’ve traced !
Its chain of bright fancies seem almost effaced,
Till Memory, tho fond one that sits in the soul,
Took up the frail links,and collected the whole.
As the dew to the blossom—tho bud to the beo,
As the scent to the rose—are those memories tome;
Bound the cords of my huart they have tremblingly !
clung.
And the echo it gives is the song I have sung.
To Strangers and Travellers, who prefer a
privato to a public house.
