Tle humi'n Visit—Condition of Ire
land.
The Queen’s Into visit to tho Irish metropolis
cannot fail to demonstrate how little understood
and how grossly misrepresented are the char- ,
actor and feeling of the people of Ireland. Eng- ‘
lishiuou who have boon taught to consider the
Irish as a race thoroughly disloyal and averse
to all constituted authorities naist be surprised }
to learu that in no portion ot her dominions is !
Victoria received with more enthusiastic loyal,
t y than in this so-called abode of disaffection,
ltritish Sovereigns have so seldom sot foot in
Ireland, that the novelty of a llovul visit has
undoubtedly a great influence in creating en
thusiasm; but any who witnessed the Queen's •
reception in Dublin last week must have per- i
ceivod that novelty alone could not have pro-’
dueed the expression of warm, heartfelt devo
tion, which was apparent in each exeit>*d coun
tenance. Asa rule, in all countries the upper J
mid more wealthy classes are, from education
and interest, disposed to pay just respect to the
head of the .State; they arc anxious’to preserve J
it iu its integrity, fooling that in proportion as ;
they pay it due homage, and contribute to the j
maintenance of its rights and privileges, tlicy i
take the surest method of retaining their own j
rank and property; but with the lower classes, j
who have no position to lose, we must seek for |
some other motive. A large proportion of the J
crowd which welcomed the Queen iu the streets j
of Dublin was composed of the poorest of her *
subjects—of beings whoso gaunt forma and 1
wretched garments attested their poverty—and ,
£ot these were perhaps the most demonstrative I
of their loyalty. To such a pitch of devotion !
to the person of the Sovcreigu were they wound
up. that a man who threw a petition into the j
Queen's carriage was with difficulty protected
from the violence of the mob, who imagined 1
that he had attempted to insult or injure her. ,
Tnis loyalty proceeds from two causes—firstly, j
from the warm affectionate disposition of tho .
Irish, who have always been retnarkabio for
their attachment to their native superiors, and
who are thus r tidily inclined to exercise, tho ‘
same lecling towards a noble and gracious
lady; an I, secondly, because they have from
hitler experience discovered that the mad in- !
ceiidiary schemes of agitators have invariably
led to tiieir own discomfiture, and to the misery 1
of the misled creatures whom they have indu- 1
tied to become their tools, and they have thus
tti*rivod ut tho conclusion that from the cotisti- I
tuted authorities of the State alone can redress
for their real grievances be derived. The
Queen's visit has certainly dono good to many;
but there are exceptions to every rule, and up
on cite small portion of the community a griev
ous injury has been inflicted—upon those who,
by false assertions, virulent abuse of all authori
ties, and revolutionary doctrines, have endea
vored to prejudice the people against the So
vereign, and to induce them to abstain from
any manifestation of their loyalty. They have
cause for complaint, for their trade is gone, their
warnings have boon disregarded, their pro
phesies have proved false, and the Queen may
Tie well contented with her visit, if its obly re
sult Ims been to show how utterly impotent aie
the threats of disappointed agitators, and how
far they are from representing the true feelings
of her Irish subjects. On two occasions Irish
loyalty has been triumphantly proved, and
Englishmen should not lay the blame of any
apparent disaffection upon the shoulders of tho
real offenders—upon those who, taking ail van
tage of the madness produced by disease, misery,
or want, inflame the passions of tlicir hearers,
and instigate them to outrage the laws of tho
land, well knowing that punishment will fall
upon the actual perpetrator of the offence; but
that when danger is over they can step in and j
reap the benefit of the act for which their de- ,
luded agents have suffered.
But it is not only as a test Os loyalty that the
Queen’s visit is remarkable. In all times the
bane of Iroluud has been disunion; the cause
of her many failures has hitherto boon the im
possibility of inducing men of different creeds
ati'l parties to act in concert for tho advance
ment of the common welfare. It has usually
been sufficient for one party to decry an insti
tution, and to use every effort to thwart its pro
ceedings, because the opposite party advocated
and supported it; but at last a better and wiser
spirit has prevailed—a great national enterprise
has been achieved under the direction of men
of all parties, and tho natural result has been
complete success. Protestant and Roman
Catholic, Liberal and Tory, the.i'tizen and
nobleman, have combined to carry out the pro
ject of the Great Industrial Exhibition, and
thus more lias been done in one year to show
that Ireland is capable of not only conceiving
but also of completing great designs, than cen
turies of disunion could have accomplished.
When tho exhibition was firstHesigned, it was
said, “Oh, it will never bo finished—lrish peo
ple always design, but never do.” Even when
it was finished its success was doubted, and its
failure as a speculation confidently predicted,
It has been finished, it has succeeded, and it
will pay. But why these forebodings—why
this practical refutation of them? The proph
ets of failure h id but too much reason for their
doubt. History tells us how frequently failure
has resulted from quarrels among tho projectors
of great enterprises in Ireland, and it needs
only a short tour through tho country to dis
cover how frequently the house has been begun
on so much too large a scale for tho means of
the builder, that it has been left half finished
and that, in some instances, tho building
designed for the entruco-lodge has absorhed all
the money intended to build the custlo in,
fact, the besetting sin of improvidence gave
ample reason for doubting the*successful issue
of tho undertaking. These doubts have been
falsified, and in this instance, by foresight and
self-reliance. This same self-reliance is of all
attributes the one most required in Ireland.
We all know that in the commercial world cred
it is absolutely necessary—that the richest firms
could not carry out their enormous transactions
without it. Credit is, in fact, the ceufidenoe
felt that a certain man will not enter into lia
bilities which he cannot discharge. Now, ex
actly as commerce cannot be conducted without
credit, so enterprise must fail without self-reli
ance. Ireland at last foels that she possesses
and can make use of the requisite for industrial
enterprise, that it is not by reoiting her isino-
; rios and by calling upon Euglaud to assist her j
: that she will overcome her difficulties, but that i
by putting her shoulder to the wheel, and by
forcing England to acknowledge her suporiori
■ jy id the Various manufactures and agricultural
Koduct3 peculiarly adapted to Uw soil, she will
•realise tho often repeated boast that she is not a
province of England, hilt a country in hebself.
and tfill thus cumpell her richer sfliter to court
her eo-operatiou, and consider her as a valua
ble dud portion of tho British islands.
Another re’ffiflflion suggested by the occur- \
’ renees of lost week is the imperative demand
for the encouragement, or rather the creation,
of a middlo’cluss in Ireland. The prime inov
;cr in the Industrial Exhibition. Mr. Dargan, is
one of tho few true representatives of the class
in *4 hat country. One great cause of the mis
fortunes of Ireland has always been, that us ’
soon as a man ceased to be absolutely depend
ntit upon his manual labor for his support ho ut
once set up for a gentleman, and despised and
altogether abjured his former associates: and
not only did he do nothing ‘himself, but he tuo
frequently brought up his children to do no
thing ajsyj sequence was that the mid- ,
TP ■ ]i).n'iian?^^T' , -;‘M'T*"'* hut the children, ■
having no profession, subdivided their father’s j
property, and quick relapsed into tho laboring j
class. Os late .years, however, signs of the ei'e- i
ation of this class in it- true character have j
appeared, and in proportion us industry ad van- j
cos the class will increase.
- The .nobility may rest assured that tho host i
means of maintaining their order is to lend their !
best aid to the establishment of a middle class
Who, by their steady habits of business, soliei- j
tude for their hard earned possessions, and iu- ,
tiinate, acquaintance with the wants and feel
ings of the laboring classes, may present a firm !
barrier to the inioads of democracy, while at
the .sanu time they'afford a wholesome stimu- I
lus to the aristocracy, who if they do not exert f
themselves to maintain their superiority, have
no claim upon onr pity should they be shunted j
aside by their more enter pissing competitors.
Tho laboring classes also have a deep interest
in promoting the growth of an order to which
they may themselves attain, and which, by
personal experience of their grievances, nfust
be tho better able to alleviate them. Tho 1
Queen’s visit to Dublin has proved the loyiilty ;
of tho people, has attested the success of the
Exhibition, a id, in tho person Mr. Dargan.
has paid a graceful tribute to the man.of mid
die -class, who is n t ashamod of the trade
by which he won his money, and does not so
rget his former associates. If Ireland will j
follow up the course she has just commenced l
she will soon be prosperous and happy.— Lon - !

Men and Women Boarders.
There’s no calculating the difference between i
men and women boarders. Here’s Mr. Jones
been iu my house those six mouths, .and no
more trouble to me than my grey kitten. If his •
bed is shook up once a week, and His coats,
cravats, luvo-lettei's, cigars, and patent leather ;
boots left undisturbed in the middle of the floor;
he is contented asa pedagogue in vacation lime.
Take a woman to board, and (if It is perfectly
convenient) she would like to have drapery in
stead of drop-curtains; slic’d like the windows
altered to open at the topj and a wardrobe for j
hor'llounccd dresses, and a few more nails and i
auother shelf in her closet, and a bench to put
her feet on, and a little rocking-chair, and a
big looking glass: would like breakfast about i
ten minutes later than your usuul hour; tea,ten |
minutes earlier: and the gong, which shucks j
her nerves so; altogether dispensed with. She <
can’t drink coffee, because it is exhilarating ; j
broma is too insipid, and chocolate too heavy.
She don’t fancy cocoa. “ English breakfast
tea” is the only beverage which agrees with her
delicate spinster organization. She can’t digest
a roast or a fried dish, she might possibly peck
at an egg, if it wore boiled with one eye on the I
watch. Pastry she nevereats unless she knows
from what dairy the butter came which enters
into its composition. Every article of food pre
pared with butter, salt, pepper, mustard,’ vine
gar or oil; or bread that is made with yeast,
soda, milk, or salerutus, she decidedly rejects.
She is constantly washing out little duds of
laces, collars, handkerchiefs, chemisettes, and
stockings, which she festoons up to tho front
windows to dry ; giving passers-by the impres
sion that your house is occupied by it b lunch is
st-uHe ; then jerks the bell-wire for an hour or
more for relays of hot smoothing irons, to put
the finishing stroke to her operations. Slie is
often afflicted with interesting little colds and
influenzas, requiring the immediate consolation
of a dose of hot lemonade or ginger tea : chaos
ing her time for these complaints when the
kitchen lire has gone out and the servants are
on a furlough. Oh ! nobody knows, but those
wiio’ve tried, how immensely troublesome wo- j
men are! I’d rather have a whole regiment of
men boarders. All you have got to do is, to
wind them up in the morning with a powerful j
cup-of .coffee, give them a carte blanche to smoke !
and a night key, arid the work is done.
