The riding uintch of the Fairfield Cos., Conn.,
Agricultural Society, took place, as our readers ;
have already been informed, on the Oth inst. .
The day being blustering and cold, but six
ladies appeared, although thirty seven had en
tered their names. There were seven prizes,
and all the riders were of course, awarded one;
the first on the list was Miss Elizabeth Burr,
of Eastotl, prize s2j; 2d. Miss Wilhelmina Nor
man, of Fairfield, prize, a set of silver teaspoons
aud sugar tongs—the committee thinking she
was an excellent rider, also, gav • her the 7th
prize, a gold pencil, for which there was no
competitor; 3d, Miss Sarah A. Lockwood, of
(iroenwich, prize, one of Gen in's riding hats;
4th, Miss Ann Augusta Middlebrook, of New
Haven, prize, a silver cup; sth, Mrs. A. 11.
Hyington, of Norwalk, prize, a pair of silver!
butter knives; Cth, Mrs. Mary Holmes, of Green
wich, prize, a gold thimble.
Bienville, tlie Founder of X. Orleans.
We take the following communication from ‘
the National Intelligencer:
Meßfm. Editor: —ln your paper this morn
ing I noticed an article purporting to be copied
1 rout the Montreal Herald, which contains some
allusions to “ Bienville, the founder of New Or
leans,” which it may not be amiss to notice and
correct before they have secured sanctions to i
misrepresentations concerning that ancient Col
onial Governor, and impressed the present gen
eration with an undue degree of vene, ration for
I lie the memory ol “ the one in heavy mail.”
With an entire disregard of much superior men,
the article referred to represents the subject
thereof to have been “ sum-m.- above all others
l o half <t century in the early annals of J.oui>i
nun.” It is certain that Bienville was at an
c tr'v age made Governor of Louisiana ; but as
too artit ic referred to narrates the circumstan
ces of his death t Baris in 1707, “ where lie
retired at last, ending bis days there on the 7 1 li
of March, at the age of over Si) years,” and as
history states that “in 1710 his public career
t -r.limited under a cloud of censure, and the ,
disapprobation of his sovereign,” it i.s difficult to !
reconcile therewith the statements in the arti
cle concerning the portrait copied fir Mr. Do j
Bow. of Louisiana: for, supposing Bienville to
have been famous for half a century previous
to the royal disgrace he incurred in 1740, (but j
which he merited long previous,) we would ne- i
cessarily carry back his connection with public I
affairs to 1(190, when, unfortunately for the
truth of the article in question, he was but live !
years of age; and we would furthermore be an- *
tieipating the colonization of Louisiana by the
French some dozen years.
Independently, however, of these exaggera
tions respecting the character and services of
Bienville, whose transition from “ hostile move
ment* against the Indians” is effected so gently
lo Paris “at 1-st,” as to almost preclude the
idea that thirty years previous to his death he
had been disgraced by his monarch. Ho had
frequently disgraced his name and race by the ‘
most perfidious conduct, towards the Indians, ;
and been the cause of the untimely death of the i
noble and brave D'Artagnette, and the occasion i
of the massacre of the colony of St. Catherine. 1
While Bienville was in early years distinguish- i
ed for courage, and perhaps prudence, his whole !
history leaves but little to entitle his memory to
veneration ; and that my view is correct I will
take occasion shortly to make appear at greater
length. It. seems to me a little curious that
one who died as late as 1767, should be painted
as clad in a coat of “mail.” Some pieces of a
coat of mail were found in possession of tho
Southern Indians in 161)9, which were presumed
to have been preserved among them from tho
time of Do Soto, more than two hundred years
previous to tho death of Bienville, when chain
armor was worn ; but, unless I am much out of
my reckoning, no portraits were painted with
tho mail armor during the lifo of Bienville.

When the Delegation from the Cherokees
and other Indian Gibes of tho West visited
Washington last April, they intended to pro
sent an address to the Lady of the President,
but were prevented from tho expected inter
view by tho sad bereavement which had just
deprived the President and his Lady of their
only son. The address which the Indians had
prepared for the occasion is published in tho
Cherokee Advocate, (Indian paper,) as follows:
Honored Madame—Our raeo have been
rarely honored with the privilege of paying
their personal respects to tho lady of (he chief
magistrate of this great republic. The only
exceptions, I believe, was Mrs. Madison and
Mrs. Tyler, who kindly conceded to us this
favor. On behalf of the Cherokee, Choctaw,
and Chickasaw Nations, their representatives
now present beg leave to express to you the deep
gratitude they feel for this distinguished privi
lege you havo afforded, to tender you their
siuoero wishes for your welfare and long con
tinued happiness.
Permit us, madam, to remark that your sex
in this favored land constitute Ihc grand in
strument for the enlightenment of your race,
and we trust of the world, in wisdom and the
preservation of good government—and although
your virtues and intellect are not under tho
control and auspices of European systems, yet
they aro more brilliant than those nurtured by
tho thrones of oriental splendor.
It has beon tho custom of tho Indians to ad
dress tho President by the venerated name of
Great Father; tnny we not venture to address
you ns tho maternal political parent of our
race, and as such ask your blessing!

The Phrase “whip the devil round the

Tribune thus:—“Chastise the Ancient Nicho

The Journal of Commerced well remarks on
the causes of failure among merchants, when
it says:
“There are causes nearer home which com
plicate Hit* web of our prosperity far mors than
j tho Turkish question, but these seem to he over
i looked, while undue importance is given to the
other. There may be war, between Russia and
Turkey, and it is possible that France and Eng
land uiay be involved in it; although we deem
the last improbable, and tho first quite doubt
! ful.
i But if we could stand well at home—if mer
\ chants, and merchant’s clerks would stop dub
j bling in stock and other speculations, outside of
! their regular business—if young beginners, and
houses with limited capital, would confine them
j within the CI Pole which they could span with
| their own means, keeping down their expenses.
and aping neither tho stylo or manners of mil
- lionnires—in short, if business men generally
would show a desire to develop some other
traits of character, than tho one ambition lbr
sudden wealth—the sabre and tho scymeter j
j might clash on the borders of Europe, without ,
creating any excitement on this side of the At
lantic.

How It feels to have the Yell®'*
Fever.
A correspondent from Xcw-Orlenns, who np
pears to understand tho nature of the epidemic
thus graphically pictures it forth:
I “The strong sinewed man sleeps at night
i revelling in beautiful dreams, hut as he nwak
! ens in the morn, all the fires of a volcano seem
concentrated in his brain. His face grows hag
gard with its intense suffering. His eves ro
j volvo in their orbits with glaring vivacity,
j Yellow streaks overspread his features in a
! moment, as if dashed there by a coarse brush
| dipped in gall. Sharp pangs tremble in his
j marrow. His blood throbs like lightning, as
hot and auick in every bursting vein ami then
a wirldwind of the wildest delirium wraps his i
soul in dreams of lire. Oh! this is the Yellow
Fever!”
