There was a heavy IVo.-t at Align.-tu y . tor-lay ‘
morning, and though it made but litilo show
upon the ground, o wing to the rums of the and iy
previous, the roofs of tfie (toasts were white n.
with snow. Wo pc-r-uilie the frost was vViy
general throughout the state, and higher tip
country, it has doubtless left an unwelcome
mark upon the cotton crops. The potato vine.,
tur several miles this Ado of Augusta have been j
cflcctually blighted by the cold.
The Auguhta and Uaj iHulioro Komi.
passed over thi road yetowday, in com
pany with some twenty other pa - ngers, and .
found that portion of it, which is completed, (..
bein admirable order. A train lta> been run

Though this new line is butabnot Idurtecu miles ■
in length, and not so h.md.-onicly equip] . and ,-,s i
olil established lines, it i, yet very c.uulbrtahly |
furnished, an 1 is a great desideratum t. the ‘
traveller, In the fact that it reduces the staging j
dislanco between .Savannah and Augusta t• oil- •
ly fourteen miles.
Those stages by the bye, have be A the a.is
of very great dissati.-facti u during the past!
week, owing to the immense increase of travel j
upon the line oceasionod by the nttraclinn.- of
the late State l air in Augusta. Many j. i .n.<
from tho up country who might have readied j
Augusta via Macon, preferred coining over the j
Central Hoad. The influx of passengers was i
not anticipated hy tho proprietors of the line;!
and though they did everything in their p -.v i ;
to accommodate, yet many of the passenger?
were seriously inconvenienced. From time im- !
memorial it has been the privilege of travellers
to complain, protest, and grumble whenever
anything goes wrong; an 1 from what wo bear,
the privilege bus bt-eu -x- r*-i1 in tin- instance
of which wo speak. Hut the truth is, stage ‘
coaches arc obsolete, l’ew persons can be
amiable boneath their roofs, however accom
modating the driver, comfortable the coach, or
fine the team. Though the spirit of the ago will
perhaps excuse this di -ati i.o lion and .• ■ n de
mand nn expression of it, we eonfe-s a greater
admiration for that spirit which wo saw e\in •-
cd yesterday by two highly resjeetable gentle
men who were fellow travellers with us. When
tho stage in which they 1 do came to a dead
halt nt tho foot of a very steep hill, instead of
fretting and fuming as many g.■ u:]•• ni.-n do,
they jumped out .-miling from the coach, pullud
off their kids, and taking hold of the muddy
wheels, soon assisted the vehiclo out of the dif
ficulty. Wo heard oik* of them laughingly ex
claim to tho other that it was line exercise IV r
a cold morning. And so it was . and though
ono would prefer not t- take such exercise, yet
when circumstances require if. it is not only
m.ro manly to act as they did, but we think it
more pleasant than to work one’s .*■-If into
“a stow,” and then work out of it, by venting
the bottled wrath in malediction and complaint.
e intended -peaking more fully of the no v
