Our Opelika frieuds have beeu wonder-
jug what had become of this department.
fNVe take some of tho hlauie of the matter
Uperhaps all of it should rest with us.
,6ur matter was eon tided to a new agent
upon the road, who had temporarily occu-
jpied Mr. 'Wilhelms’ place, and not under
standing its importance to us, failed to
I mail it properly. We trust that so long
i we may be connected with the paper,
[such an event may not again occur.
Nuw ami Tlieu
We have a very distinct personal recollec
tion of the poverty of tho people, after
the late war. We ku jw of their privations,
of their toils incessant and unremitting
to agaiu bring plenty to a country strippod
of supplies, of food, raiment, stock, tools
and almost every adjunct of success in
their calling. We remember, too, how
the bravo men and fair women buckled
on the armor of peace, and gladly laid
away tho trusted rifle and honored sword,
the jewels and millinery of happier days,
and went forth atield to wield the axe,
mnu tho plow, and so rehabilitate a land
fruitfulness, and peace in years
gone h)', and success followed tho
effort. With tho thousands who
wisely eschewed speculative planting
and sought patiently, laboriously, to feed
and clothe their families and dependants.
1 These men are around us to-day—happy
iu the enjoyment of their fow acres well
tilled, ami so returning to tho careful hus
bandman eighty and an hundred fold of
tho fruits of tho earth and the cattle after
their kine. What we wish to impress
upon tho reader is this great truth—a
| truth having its foundation laid in the
immutable promises of Him who sendeth
tho seed time and harvest, and latter
rains upon t lie willing earth—aud that is :
that economy and industry in any calling
will insure an abundance of everything
needful, not only to sustain life, but af
ford very tuauy of its luxuries; secondly,
the same application and the same ecoao-
J my used ho well the year succeeding the
war will again fill our barns, crowd our
smoke-houses, and revive the sinking
hearts of a people who have endured
much, lost all, and learned but little.
Shall the lesson of the present be lost
upon ns? Shull we still go on following
the wako of this cotton mania, existing
on tho skeletons which lino its path ? Or
shall we see in 1871 an effort ns iu 18(17#
to wipe away the lino of destruction which
marked tho march of a desolating army ?
We hope for much; hut fear it will be
‘h ipo deferred, which rnuketh the heart
sick.’*
It u n aw ay Match in High I.il’e Down
Stairs.
The train ou yesterday brought from
her maternal homo Miss Clayton, colored
persuasion, accompanied by tho Hon.
flumes TVoadwoll, Representative from
Kussell, we believe, though having his
local habitation here aud hereabouts, va
riously, on their way as rapidly as rail
road aud steam might carry them to West
Foiut, tho modern (Jrotna Green for lov-
iug lasses and undesirable sons-in-law,
there to be united in the holy bands of
matrimony. The irate Uncle Ned, tho pa
ternal guardian of Miss Clayton's matri
monial venture, came in all baste, too,
and intercepted the gushing truants ; but,
alas! for human hopes, a flask of whisky
drew him from^tho line of pursuit, aud
we have no doubt tho lion. James and
the lovely Miss C. are one flesh ere this.
The Public School
promises to open with largo additions to
its numbers. We are gratified to be able
to siy that tho Trustees have an assur
ance of ample fuuds to sustain this noble
beuofuction for the scholastic year.
We learn also that, at a meeting of the
Trustees on Saturday, Miss Ariadue Ad
ams ami Miss Margaret Frazer were elect
ed teachers in the 1'rimary Department,
iu place of Mrs. Mi/ell, resigned.
Messrs. Wm. Himes and K. M. Green
wore elected Trustees to till vacancies by
the withdrawal of Mr. McClelaud and
removal of Gov. Pennington.
Now that all things are ready and ample
tor tall success, we hope to hoc our citl-
zeus gonorully patroui/o this institution,
ho that by another term it shall be neces
sary to enlarge our already excellent facil
ities tor the foutulalon of an education
for every chit l in the city.
