Important Cotton Claim Decision.
Our readers will remember a dispatch
published a duy or two ago announcing
the decision, by tho U. S. Circuit Court
of New Y’ork, of u very important cotton
claim case in favor of the old Fugle fac
tory company of tlda city. From W. H.
Jackson and R. M. Gunby, witnesses for
claiiuanlB who returned yesterday, we learn
some fuither particulars of the caso which
w ill be of interest to the people of this
ueetion.
In lJeconibcr, 18(15, one hundred and
sixty bales of cotton belonging to* tho
Ragle Manufacturing Company, W. II.
Young and I. M. Wright, were taken
from TusUMgee, Alu., by some of tho vast
bord of cotton thieves who infested the
South in those dark days, and shippod to
Simon Draper, agent of tho V. S. Treas
ury at New York for the receipt and ssle
of captured and abundono.l property. The
owners pursued the cotton to New York
and there replevied it. It became tho
subject of adjudication by the Supreme
Court. The case, after passing through
various stages, and beiug in Court
nine years, came to a hearing
last week before that learned
and able jurist. Judge Kuthuuie!
Shipman, who, after a laborious investi
gation extending through six days, de
cided all the points involved against the
government and in favor of the claimants.
This decision being of groat importance
to the people of this section, as bearing
upon many similar cases, we hope to pub
lish it, or at least its main points, in u
few days. The amount involved in the
issue is about $80,000. It may be carried
to the Supremo Court, and tho claimants
thus be thwarted of their just dues for
some time to come, as we learn that sun
dry parties in Savannah, in favor of
whom similar decisions were made nearly
a year ago, have not yet received their
money.
Messrs. W. J. McAllister, R. M. Gun
by, C. A. Green and W. II. Jackson, of
thin city, wore in Now York in attend
ance upon tho court ns witnesses in tho
caso. Gunby and Juckson reached home
yesterday morning; McAllister and
Groono will prolmhly ariivo to-dny or to
morrow.

in the front room waiting on a customer.
One hundred and ten dollars of the money
was afterwards found in auother pluce.

suppose the case will go before a Justice.
