This estate which has baeu in litigation
for tho past five or six years, has at last
been settled. It will be reniembeied
that Owen Thomas died a year or two
after the war. '1 he only will found was
one leaving all his property, which was
then considerable, to aoiuo favorite ne
groes, with tho exception of Home minor
legacies. The heirs at law took posses-
sioii und have been fighting the case ever
since. The lawyer* on the part of the
negroes took tho cane for half they might
recover. Tho content has been fought
three timoR before the Superior and
twice in tho Supreme Court, and every
thin', Bave one, decided in favor of the
will. The estate after the war wan re
garded ns worth some $50,01X1. Sinco
it sustained u heavy ions by the loiltiro of
a Charleston commission house, ut:d the
depreciation of land*. We understand
there oro now some $20,000, which, after
paying the executor and his attornios, are
to be divided between the negroes and
their counsel. If we remember rightly
Col J. N. Uarnsoy (now dead), Col. B.
A. Thornton and M. A. Blandford were
counsel for tho negroes; Ingram A Craw
ford for the executor.
J. Rhodes Itroivno vs. Ragle and Phenlur
Factory.
The above ease*, which excited a good
deal of public interest, und which was
tried at tho recent session of the Hupe-
rior Court, has just boon before Judge
Johnson on a motion for new trial. Tho
action was founded upon u claim by tho
plaintiff for the sum of $10,000 a yoar as
the engineer and siipeiintendent of the
mills for twenty-live months’ Hurvice, the
whole sum demanded being, besides in
terest, about- $21,000. The company had
fixed the salary ut $4,500 a year, amount
ing to something loss than $10,000—thin
leaving a wide margin between tho par
ties. Upon the trial many witncBseH were
sworn to establish tho value, tho pluintiif
to sustain tho larger, the defomlaut tho
smaller suiu. H was also claimed by tliu
dotondant that if anything wero duo, it
was barred by the stututo of limitations,
more than four years having olupscdfroui
tho rendition of the services to tho com
mencement of the suit. Both questions
were submitted to tho jury, which ro-
tui ned a verdict lor $7,200 as the value of
plain till's services, and finding against tho
staiiiloof limitations; thus, utter allow
ing credits for payments, entitled pluintiif
iver some $5,000 besides interest
t'poii heating iho argument on the mo
>r a new trial, Judge Johnson held
that dofondsnt was entitled to tho same,
and it was ho ordered. Tho Eagle and
Fhemx was represented by John Foa
body, Esq., and Judge Crawford; Mr.
mo by Major Moses and Col. Bland
ford.

Hoary Durdens on Cit irons,
In the early part of December an officer
iu the Internal Revenue Department,
inline wo cannot now recall,
here looking over tho deed books of tl.o
county, iu order to ascertain what instru
ments bail beeii recorded niuoo tho y
18i*2, to which bad not been atfixed U
stamps. Tho “stamp not" was passed
that year, at which time, and for th
yours subsequently, the Confederates wero
trying to establish their independence,
and no 1'. S. laws were in force in tho
Mouth. In fact, it was regarded as trea
son to obey them. The olllccr finished
his work, and reported to ttio hoadquar
tors at Macon. In tho last few days a list
of Hix or seven hundred names have been
sent to bo posted at the Court-house, that
all may see it. Tho U. M. officers claim
them nrn that many delinquents in this
county. There are sumo thirty or forty
oases entered against the conutyand some
against the city. Opposite each name,
wo understand, is the aiuouut of tuxes
due, and also five dollars for being in de
fault. Those who bought property when
Confederate money was worth fifty and
over for ono, are asesssed at the price
they paid. Feople are assessed heavy
aiiiouuts who now have to toil diligently
for every dollar they got. and payment is
au utter impossibility.
We do not know tho requisites of the
Revenue law, but wo cannot believe that
any court in tho land will hold that such
proceedings are legal, just or right, or
that payment will bo enforced. If the
collection is attempted, band togotbor
and make a case for tho tribunals, and if
they decide against you, appeal through
your Representatives to Congress Such
a measure, under the circumstances,
moans simple ruin to hundreds of people
by forcing their property to sale. Tho
movement is unjust und iniquitous, uud
wo do not believe tho Government will
sustain if. How could V. S. Revenue
stamps bo procured during tho war, uud
how could thousands manage to pay for
them afterwards ?
The Sacred Concert J.ast Night. Attention ! I
Our Baptist friends, had u wretched As my Address on elementary Aobi-
evening for their concert—could not have cultural ChkmiriKY, teaching the cheap-

House Carpenter anil Builder.
Jobbing Julie hi short notice,
ml •peclbcutiona furnished for all at) lei
whs small, thongh the concert came oft',
and an elegant one it was.
Tho 1lrat four pieces on tho programme
were sung by the Sunday School, und
every intelligent planter in this section, |
nod that I may be compensated in a rooas- 1
ore somewhat commensurate with the
acknowledged merits of the production '
though more difficult than the usual stylo | and value of the information conveyed,
of Sunday School music, were charm
ingly rendered, all parts being well sus
tained. In a solo in “Lead Me to Jesus"
Miss M. J. G. sang very sweetly. In the
several pieces sung by tho choir, a trio,
“Hoar Our Prayer,” struck us os being
pleasingly harmonious, and replete with
melody. “Tho Old Sexton,” sung by
Rev. Mr. Kendrick, was pathetically
touching, and brought vividly before the
mind the sad picture of death. “Wake
tho Song of Jubilee” was like a gland
avalanche of sweet sounds. lu this piece
Miss K. M. sung a charming solo, and
parson Kendrick brought out tho tins
powers of bis voice.
Several pieces on the programme were
omitted for the sake of brevity and be
cause of the absence of special singers.
The entiro concert passod oft' delight
fully. One could not fail to bo impressed
with tho tine vocal talent of Iho Baptist
choir and iunday school. Wo doubt
whether any church in tho city combines
so much. Wo might mention several
lino voices, but wo doubt tho propriety
of it in such a notice as this.
No collection was taken, but tho pastor
gave notice that tho concert would be re
peated next Friday evening or tho first
pleasant night thereafter. When it is
repeated wo hope our citizens will avail
themselves of the opportunity to be
present. 0 Such an evening will bo well
aud profitably spout, us opportunities to
hear bolter music are rarely ottered in
Columbus.
Holden Wedding.
A worthy and prominent phy.siqjsn of
this city, celebrated bis 40th, or what he
terms his Golden Wedding, on Monday
evening. In retroRpecting a little yester
day, he informed us he is (15 years of
age. hud been married 40 years and
church member about the same lougth of
time; had never been drunk, pluyeil
cards, or any other game for money ; had
boon twice wealthy and broke ; has been
the father of seven children ; bad no do
me-tic squabbles, or allowed anything to
seriously disturb bis peace. This is a
good record. The gentlomau looks as if
he might bo good for another twenty
years, und w ill probably earn another for
tune before he dies.

Vo Meeting.
Owing to the inclemency of the weath
er and short uml insufficient notice, no
meeting of Muscogee Agricultural Society
was held yesterday. Tho Secretary re
quests us to say that the meeting was
postponed until Friday uext at 12 o'clock.
Ah was previously htated the object of
tbiH meeting is to uppoiut delegates to tho
Stato Agricultural Convention which
meets iu Columbus on the 10th of Febru
ary. The meeting on Friday, therefore,
should be largely uttouded, iu order that
all arrangements for the approaching
Convention may be perfected at once.
Tho probability is that said Convention,
the first of the kind which has mot here
for many years, will bo largely attended
hy the best class of agriculturists and
grangers in the State, us we understand
de'egates from all counties in tho State
will be passed to und from the Convention
free by tho several railroads. Each coun
ty, we hoar, is entitled to throe delegates,
ami if even half tho counties are repreieu -
ed the body will be a large and imposing
one. As the space for making arrange
ments is short, no time should be lost.
Let the meeting on Friday bo largely
attended by the planters of Muscogee.
U is a Jdticf
Quito a charming one was givou last
evening in the former rooms of tho Libra
ry Association. A number of our most
beautiful ladies and elegant gentlemen
assembled to while away the dull rainy
hours with dancing, and tho gaiety aud
zest that attend upon happy hours. All
was highly enjoyablo. A “German” isex-
pectod Friday night.
Someth lng Wonderful,
T he papers are bragging largely upon
how much cotton, &e., one nuiu with one
blind mule, has accomplished the past
year. All sounda nicely, but is it not time
to stop this cliatt'. A man near Columbus
owned not a foot of land, and not a single
mule , yet common report says he made
fifteen bales of cottoiFevery year. How he
did it was only a surmise, but lie did it.
Ho is dead now, so no longer Hoek his
merits to disclose. He is dead now, but
ho was awful on making crops while living.
1Money.
Money is scarce, yet it cannot bo de
nied theie is still a great deal of hard
cash hid away in the houses of mechanics
nnd farmers. This fact became evident
in onr city whon, some time ago, C’aptnin
T. E. Blanchard announced to the people
that he bad determined to sell his unri
valed stock of dry goods at cost for cash.
At once his store became crowded by
those desiriug to tako advantage of his
ort'or, nil of whom htwmmo convinced of
tho truth of his public statement Cap
tain Blanchard haw wisely determined to
continue the sale of his g<mds, believing
it will bo to the ad vantage R" himself and
customers to continue selling at his for
mer low lutes. Wo can commend this
sterling establishment and its energetic
bond and courteous attendants to all who
desire dry goods of every prioo, style aud
variety. _ jail if

this change, I do hereby agree to re

family by the cultivation of poor laml.
The problem to be solved by the South
before wc can hope for agricultural recu
peration and prosperity, is cheap aud re

problem. I defy the agricultural or sci
