Col. Hogan has held the office of Post
master in Columbus about uino years.
Rumors of a change are now plentiful,
and it is sai l there are many applicants,
among thorn Ketehum, tho colored prin
cipal of the colored department of our
public schools. It is generally thought
tho chances are in favor of Mr. Walter
Johnson, the chief clerk in the office
A Supposed Sunt a Killed.

morning lust, a wild fowl, supposed by all
who saw it to bo a swan. Weight tifteeu
pound-, plumage snow wliito, black bill,
lag? and feat, neck two t‘«et long, and
measured over live feet from tip of bill to
toes. It had been seen for several days
about tho pond and shot at several times.
Charge* by a Colored Legislator'.
Mr. Lynn, an Englishman by birth,
now living at O.swieliee, was arrested on
Thursday last by the Sheriff of Russ. II
county, upon a warrant charging him w ith
assault with intent to murder, sued out
by Homy Mitten, colored member of tho
Legislature from Russell. Mr. Lynn ap
peared befoie V McGtdice, N I*, at Seale,
and waiving exuniuntiiui w.r. required to
gi>o bond lor his appearum
term of the Circuit Court.
I Encouraging Deports from Our Hirer
Country.
Mr. NVatt, of the linn of Watt A
Walker, returned a day or two ago Irom j
a trip to Jackson county, Florida. He
brings encouraging reports from the far
mers of that and adjoining counties. He
found nearly all of them with corn for
sale at 7>0 cents per bushel on the spot,
and many of them with pens of tine
hogs. This is tho result of a determina
tion formed a year ago to free themselves
from tho yoke of their Western masters.
Their llrst year’s experience is highly
gratifying, and they are determined to
pursue tho same policy the present year.
They will plant from one-half to two-
thirds of their lond iu cereals, sugar
cauc, potatoes, gronnd peas, Ac , devot
ing ouly then surplus enmgii a to cotton.
The only thing which troubles these peo
ple, is their old debts contracted tho two
previous years, when there was such a
serious cutting off in crops. A year ego
they we re where our farmorh are to-day.
Now they hsVu ample supplies to run
them a year. .With another bimcessful
farming year, they will be able to
struightuu their linanoial matters.
Better tlmn all, these people are strong
ly identified in feeling with OoIiiujUuh.
They confess to better prices and better
treatment here than elsewhere and are
determined to stand by us. They buve
shown this throughout this whole season
when it was possible to roach hero by
river. They fee) deeply interested in the
improvement of onr river navigation, and
desire that tho matter bo urgod persisent-
1 y upon tho atteutiou of Congress. Bear
ing all these facts in mind, we hope the
committee of gentlemen appointed by
council hojiio tiiuo ago to look after tlijs
matter will use all possible diligence to
secure action during the present session.
The subject is one of weighty importance
to the business men of Columbus is well
as to citizens generally along tho river.

Complaints of Dry Goods Men.
Some of our dry goods morchauts com
plain that farmers uro not paying them a
just pro rata of their indebtedness. Thoy
come to town, pay their grocers and other
bills, and leave their dry goods accounts
for tho lust, and it generally turns out
that the money is exhausted beforo dry
goods dealers are reached. It noems to
us the ouly fair and honorable way for
dealing, whore a man is not able to meet
all his obligations, is to pay each a part
and treat all alike. Homespun, jeans,
shoos and huts, are as necessarily planta
tion supplies as bread uud meat, aud tho
obligation to pay for thorn is just as
strong and binding. As wo have often
said beforo, let dohtors show an honost
disposition to square their nccouuts and
they will find our inorchauts, as usual,
disposed to extend accommodations dur
ing the approaching spring and summer.
Otherwise doliuquouls will tiud themselves
iu a bud fix.
Tho lovers of tragedy should not fail

Deported Theft.
An old colored man, living on the es
lato of Mr. Klliaou, *»f Talbot couuty,
brought some cotton to town on Tuesday,
which was sold by his friend aud employer
(Mr. Ellison), and tho money turned over
to him. Tho total Amount turned over
was $37. The old freed man bought a
blankot of Mr. K\lo for $2; invested a
small amount at Blackwell's apple stand ;
w ent to Kiug s to buy a pair of shoes, and
there discovered that he had lost all his
money. What went with it no one cer
tainly knows, though it ii believed it was
oxtraoted from his pocket by outside
sharpers. From what we hoar, the old
man is fooblc and not very bright, which
made him au easy prey for dishonest
pickpockets. A man, either white or

Shukspeuro’s play of “Richard III."
Those who desire to son Mm tragedy rep
resented iu u masterly manner should bo
present. The sale of reserved seats shows
that a large audience hus already been se
cured. Barrett is tine of the ablest, most
cultivated aud artistic actors in tho coun
try. llin impersonations are superb. His
ouly lival is Booth, and it is doubtful
which of these two great tragedians bears
the palm of supremacy. „Go and see him

Money Should lie In the Country.
The f*8,108 bales of cotton received in
Columbus last year, realized, at 17 cents
per pound or per bale, $4,333,180.
The Coluuibua merchants t,uld $3,3^3,20.
of goods. Of this Amount, at least. $1,-
000,000 worth were purchased by citizens,
loaviug $2,229,207* for tho country. Huh
stiacting this from the cotton money, we
have $3,703,977* as tho amount nlloted to
ootton producers. SVhat has become of
the money V Hus it all gone for pro
visions and advances obtained outside our
merchants ? Is not a great deal hidden
away '!

Other Corporations.
See notice of G. B. Oarhart, who, as
commanded by the Code, gives notice of
sale of stock. We have hunted up this
queer section of tho Code, and find that
it reads as follows, and seems to leave a
man no discretion iu the matter :
“When a stockholder in a hank or
other corporation is individually liable
under the churtor, and shall transfer his
stock, ho shull ho exempt from such
liability, uuless ho receives a written no
tice from a creditor within six months
after such transfer of his intention to
hold him liable ; Provided, ho shall givo
notice once n month for six months of
such transfer, immediately thereafter, iu
two newspapers iu or nearest tho place
w here such institution shall keep its prin
cipal offico."

received aud heartily endorsed by almost
every intelligent planter in this section,
and that l may be compensated in a meas-

acknowledged meritH of the production
and value of tho information conveyed,
1 do from this date establish tho price at
7*0 cents per copy. In consideration of
this change, 1 do hereby agroo to io-
fund the money to any farmer who, after
loading tho production, will certify to mo
he is not fully satisfied with tho invest
ment. There is no slavery so hopeless
that which compels a man to support a
family by the cultivation of poor laud.
Tho problem to bo solved by tho South

Money.
Money is scarce, yet it cannot bo de
nied there is still a great deal of hard
cash hid away iu the houses of mechanics
aud farmers. The fact became evident
iu our city whuii, some time ago, Captain
T. E. Blanchard announced to the people
that he had determined to sell his unri
valed stock of dry goods at cost for cash.
At once his store became crowded by
thoae deairing to take advantage of his
otter, all of whom became convinced of
tho truth of his public stutomeut. Cap
tain Blanchard has wisely determined to
continue tho sale of his goods, believing
it will be to the advantage of himself and
customers to continue selling at his for
mer low rates. Wo can commend this
sterling establishment and its energetic
head aud courteous attendants to all who
desire dry goods of every price, style and
variety. t jail tf
