il, it is equal to spinach, and tho crop
leb m >ro uhuudant. No garden should
without it. Among those cultivated
r their roots, the turnip, long blood and
ear varieties arc well adapted to South-
U culture. As the beet sends down a
ig tap root, the ground Bbould be brok-
drfcp to enable it to penetrate easily in
,rck of food and moisture. Thoro is no
at that shows a greater improvement
tho application of liquid manure than

o April they should be soaked twenty- !
>uv hours before planting, as they are
mu vegetating. This will give them
start of the weeds. Plnut in drills
ixtoou inches upart, a single seed four
Bobos apart in the drill. When well up
ind passed through all the vicissitudes of
larly beet hood, thin out to twelve inches.
Cabbage.
All the varieties of cabbage—kale, bro-
)li, collards and eaulillower—aro derived
•oiu a wild sea shore plant, indigenous to
•urope. They may be divided iuto threo
Lh«w : those that form heads, like tho
abbiige; those that stand eroet, with
iranching leaves, like tho collurd, bro-
nli and caulillo.vor; and those that form
mllis at their roots, 1 iko tho kohlrabi.
probably no vegetable that has
teen improved as much by art ns the cab-
»age. Origiually but a stunted, four-
euvod, saliiio weed, it has been converted
>y horticultural skill, into a sixty pound
lo id crisp ho.id, us the cabbage, or amul-
iituJe of floral arms, bearing n pulpy in-
loresence, as the cauliflower, or a bulli
ng, nutritious tuber, as the koblrnbi.
Die edible qualities of all tho cabbage
ribo being given them by artificial eul-
ttre, will show nt onco the importance of
_i correct knowledge of tho proper food to
stimulate them into a rapid growth,
iiosphatic manures are bettor for tho
bbage tribe than ammonia; therefore,
bene dust is preferable to guano. The
il.bago has three great enemies to con
sul with in Southern oulture—tho cut
worm, the aphis or plant louse, and the
cabbage worm. One of the best
remedies, or rather preventives, is in the
ipplioatiou of salt.
The square in the garden designed for
•abb igo should, in February, bo well
’-•orttoil with nianuro aud bone dust, then
I'ovorol with common salt nt tho rate til
; wonty bushels to tho acre, and spnded
Icoply under. Bolt is death to tho iuscet
tribo. death to grass and weeds, and a
friend to tho cnbbnge. Thoro are a great
many varieties of cabbage, early and late.
Hie early kinds may bo planted in a hot
bo l in January, or sowed in tbo open
ground in March; tho late kinds may bo
sown from April to August, but it is safer
i an early start, to plant early,.qh
o nut always sure of seasons in the
summer suitable for transplanting. Cab-
bag . .-. onId not bo transplanted during
or immediately after u long drought,
oven with a good ruin; they should bo
loft alter the rain to form new rootlets,
whi.-h they will do in two or threo days af
ter a rain : then they may lie transplanted
any < i niug, just b> fore sundown, with
• lety, by applying half a pint of wator
atoii j i ii.c roots. No mutter how long a
stem «!i.t ,bbage may have, put it in tho
ground up to the leavei aud cut off tho
tap root. Plant tho cabbage as it origin
ally flood in tho ground This mode of
pluming will cause it to head quicker and
lir.ner. K.irly cabbages may be pluntod
wh-ro lin y mo to Maud and will bead
fin-lv. but the later ktudrt must bn trnnR-
piatitnd deep to insure thou* full dovolop-
Arnong tho many var.eties I find the
green glu/bd, a late cabbage, less subject
to the rivages of iuBeots tluu any other
Variety. Cabbage need will prcseive its
vitality* for three years. l'..uliflowor and
Urocoli should be cultivated in all r>--
t-pocti like the cabbage. There is uo g ,r-
den crop that rrqu io-» more work t .an
tho cabbage. It is not only to kill gr.»*,s
and woods that the grouud shotl'd bo
•■orked, but that tho soil may be light
end permeable, uft'.ndiug i n opportunity
for the upper and lower gises t • feed the
young rootlets. If tho cultivator would
save his cabbage seed pure, but < .« vari-

tjunld any turnip ho allowed togotoseed
near wheto tho cubbsge i reeding, as by
nurture of poleu with tho polen of the
sbbage it will lessen tho tendency of the
cabbage to bead. Among the varieties of
kalo in cultivation, 1 have found the Sibe
rian invaluable. It stands any degree of
fro t which we havo in this climate with
impunity, and on that account should find
•» place iu every garden. The seed niuy
be plautoil iu dii'l* eighleen inches apurt,
iu Febrnury und March for spring and
Himnuor use, aud in July aud August for
fall and winter. They aro cultivated like
the cabbage, except may be left much
thicker iu the drill. When tho leaves aro
wauted lor use, cut the stem about four
iuches above the ground, and a constant
succession of leaves will grow from tho
svrae stalk.

Mr. Kditor:—Wo would not Lave been

Partisan spirit has indeed ruined Ala
bama ; but from what party ? That which
began with tho earliest dawn of peaco.
Bullock, ono of tho offsprings,*had well
nigh sapped tho lifo of your grand old
State, when it was redoemed by an out
raged Democratic people. Louisiana,
South Carolina, and other States groan
under tho same partisan spirit to-day; and
Alabama, passing through tho South swin
dle, has culininatod in tho Lewis-court
house organizations, with such judges as
Strange, Menefoo and Appleby.
Opelika is our home. Wo are interested
in her prosperity. We think wo know
her wants; and wo know that our
county elections tho ensuiug fall de

fere. But we had hoped that with tho
going down of tho Sun, wo had not lost
ontirely tho principles upon which it

cheering rays broadcast to the furtberest
limits of its circulation. But remember
ing tbut spirit of liberality as announced
upon its union with you, with its nntno
omblnsoucd upon your mast bond, and
taken to your hoirt, its dovo'eos could
ly upon that continuation as lending all
tho advantages previously maintained by j
froo Democratic patrons. If it is incon
sistent with the principles of journalism
as adopted, that tho voice of the Dem
ocracy cannot be heard, and you cannot
