The case of Mrs. Myra ('larko Gaines
vs. G'alob Cushing was decided adversely
to Cushing in the Equity Court of the
District ol Columbia, on Monday.
One of the questions before the Nation
al Grange, dining its late session at Ht.
Louis, was the status of the Boston'
Grange. A committee was appointed to
investigate the affairs of this Grange.
Tho committee, after duo investigation,
reported that they found tho Grange com
posed of grain dealers, commission mer
chants, and otbor pcrsnuH not eligible to
membership; that tho Boston Grange had
boon guilty of insubordination, which had
worked injury to the eutiro Order; that
the members had forfeited all right to bo
considered Patrons of Husbandry in good
HtanJmg, and recommended that tin#
render of its dispensation and ritual bo
dnnmuded. The repot t was adopted, uud
the Secretary of tho National Grange in

of the comiuitteo.
Tim Augusta Chronicle gives a gratify
ing account of tho sucooss of the new
factory of Mossrs. Bussell «t HimmonH,
on tho Augusta canal. Work on this fac
tory was commenced iu July lust, and it
only commenced manufacturing opera
tions on tho first day of January, 1874.
It is now iu busy operation, making cot
ton rope, yarn mid twiuo, audit is in
tended to extond its manufacture lioro-
aftor to cotton goods generally. It llndt<
a ready sale for its fabrics, which are said
to he of n suporior quality. Orders are
constantly received from Baltimore, Now
Orleans, New York, San Francisco, St.
Louis, Ac. It is now using flfloon halos
of cotton por week (baled and wa
both used uud mixed), and turns out
weekly live thousand pounds of umuu
factored material. The eutiro cost of
tho factory, including machinery, was
•'2(42,000, and the senior partner assured
the Vh run isle's roportor that tho not
protits would nut tie less than $.
week, or over $20,000 por year—more
than fifty per cent, upon tho capital in
vested. There are at prosont Ho opera
tivos employed. Does not the success of
this oulurpriso prove that the South hits
in the manufacture of her great staple a
reliable source of wealth and prosperity
almost iitiuquulud, whenever she resolves
to avuil herself of it ?
TIIK EITAIJLA ELECTION FIGHT.
Specials to tho Montgomery papors
give fuller accounts of tho difficulty at
tho polls iu Eufuulu, on election day.
Tho dispatehos to tho Advertiser and
News say that a dispute began about an
idiot negro whoso voto was challenged ;
that his brother drew a knife and leaped
over tho ropoB arranged to koep tho crowd
from tho box; that he wv* forcibly put
out on his refusal to h nvi ; that Bill Flag,
another negro, then took up tho difficul
ty, and when a peaceable Democrat un
dertook to suppress thw difficulty he re
ceived several blows, and pistol firing
commenced ; that tho first shot was fired
by a mulatto ; that Flag was more seri
ously wounded than auyouu else, hut will
probably recover; that Mr. T. J. Everett
and County Solicitor 11. 1). l.ockc, whites,
roeeivod slight wounds, and two or throo
negroes were wounded.
Tho Journal'a dispatch says that tho
difficulty was causod by a Democratic
challenger striking a Republican; that
about thirty shots were fired, and soveral
persons wounded, ono of whom will die.
Tho entire Democratic and Conserva

about 170, which whs the imjor.ty of Mr.
Wells J. Bray, ro olocteJ Mayor. This is
a considerable gain over Inst year.

Tlie death of this gentleman at Galves
ton ou llio 18th lust, was announced sev
eral days ago by telegraph. From an
obituary notice in tho Galveston W/r.sof
Thursday, wo gather tho following prom
inent incidents of his life, lie was born
in Edgefield district, S. C., in lSltf; in
1840 ho removed to Texas, formed a law
partnership with the Jute Judge Ogletrec,
and successfully practiced his profession
until 1S.*>7, when ho was elected to the
State Senate, aud at once took front rank
as a debater. Iu 1858 he was elected to
the Fuitcd States Senate, whore he
regarded as second to none ns a ready
effective debater. With the exception of
Mr. Sniuner, Mr. Wigfall was tho most
accomplished belles-lettre scholar in tho
Senate, and he was considered almost or
quite the equal to John C. Calhoun ns an
analytical reaaouer. His fiery eloquence
electrified liis hearers, aud had much to
do in arousing the South to her grand but
uufortunato struggle for independence.
Mr. YVigfall’s first service ns a Confeder
ate was on tho start* of Gov. Pickens, of
S. C., aud in that capacity ho bore tho
fiig of truce to Major Anderson when
Fort Sumter was surrendered. lie was
afterwards first Lieutenant Colonel of a
Texas battalion, then Colonel, and after
wards a Brigadier General. Ho repre
sented Texas iu the Provisional Con
gress at Montgomery, aud after
wards in the Confederate Senate,
in which body, tho Newt says,
“he was at first the loader of the Admin
istration party, but his independent spirit
could not brook what he esteemed tho
nutocratic conduct of President Davis in
his nctiou toward General Joseph E
Johnston, and, consequently, he espoused
the cause of that ablo general, nud from
that time on to the close of the war Sena
tor Wigfall was essentially the head aud
front of the powerful opposition to Pres
ident Davis in the Southern Congress,
and it wan at his instigation that tho posi
tion of Comrnander-iu-Chief of the Con
federate Armies, with almost unrestricted
powers, was conferred on General ltobert
E. Lee."
on. Wigfall left the country at the
close of the war, and remained abroad
until a littlo more than a year ago, when
ho returned and took up his residence iu
Baltimore. Ho had only a few weeks
