UPELIKA DEPARTMENT.

The election To-l>ny
Will settle the question of our city gov
ernment for the municipal year, uml pos
sibly exorcise h controlling influence upon
our county elections in the smuttier.
Tho peoplo will to-day deoido whether
the city, and secondarily the county, shall
gradually sink, cllicially, into tho mazes
of iniquity nod political corruption char
acterizing “negro supremacy” wherever
aud whenever it has laid its unclean hands
upon tho legislative aud official offices of
the State and controlled them.
They will to-dny decide whether this
ignorant unwashed rabble, held intact by
u few designing whites, who, for pelf aud
plunder, have ignored, or rather boon ig
nored by tho decency of the country, shall
I successfully hurl tho foul crowd upon the
| ballot box aud open upon ns a rule of
Radicalism which has brought naught
but shame, debt and well nigh ruin upon
the hitherto untarnished fame of their
proud States. Need we mention South
Uaroliup, Louisiana aud our own belovod
Alabama, now groaning aud dying under
Radicalism disguised by tho faces of her
own sons, masked under the time-honored
name of Democracy, nnd who thus seek
to beguile our people to their support ?
If there over was uu hour which called
trumpet tones to tho while men of this
y nud State for active, unremitting,
unfaltering exertion, to rid us now and
er of this ignuruut and unscrupulous
mass of political putridity, that hour is
now upon us, and no one who values the
future or casts a thought upon the re
sults, cortaiu to follow tho lend of a party
who have proven themselves utterly des
titute of capacity for anything, save nmn-
bor.-\ lo ruin power and place, und rob the
peop'r* whom thoy misrepresent, will fail
in tin- i or of need to come to the res
ale, an i b • vote and vui ' place the seal
of public iKiideuiuation upon the man nr
men who soak the support and look to
the negro for success.
A Word More.
Whilst entertaining every proper ro-
ipoct for tho gentleman leading tho op-
losition, and having iu our mind his dec
laration of “being as good u Democrat as
iQyone," yet we think him strangely
ilinded for a man of his acknowledged
lommon sense, and nro 1-alf inclined to
kink him practicing a huge pructicul joke
d[ which he is full fond—upon our
black aud tan fellow-citizens, and it may
e some white onus along with them.
Wo have been told of various offices
urbieli the faithful arc to till, but aro free
say that “poor nig”—the solid voters
)iu whom Riiccoss is to come—is left out
u tho cold. No Marshal’s star, or Police
's club, awaits your horny hands,
lomembor, Democrats lmvo novor given
lull - , Pomp and Sambo office, and tho
odor is “as good a Democrat as any-
ody. ”
Fancy IIOp.
Our Polico report au excessively edify-
]g spectuclo at tho residence of darling
ally Copers, on last night. Soaio half a
ozon colored dimmols, nud ns many fos-
while men, mingled together iu
ft and mazy waltz. These follows
jote tho opposition ticket to-day, am
o glad of it.
A now photographer 1ms Bottled on
ebatonble ground and fluug his hanucr
tho brooze. Wo could tell the people
'here Mac. lives, but printers need
r as well ns painters.
Upon inquiry, wo find but few lieus and
tort gages as compurod with last y
ir county books.
As tho weather warms up, wo uotico
unclreds of school children wearing the
ihool fixings—aprons, satchels, and wbut
ol. Calhoun eulls “Alabama slings.”
Rrcviticm.
—Froe whiskey, ask “Dowdey."
*- -Last year wo voted about r»2f>. Tho
ads claimed to lmvo counted noses ami
led 210 blacks on their lists. Some were
verlookod, ns there was no nose to count.
—Independent Democratic candidates
ill know alter to-day just how many
'omocratic friends solicited them to take
10 field.
— We regret to say that Mr. Wm. 11.
Ic\ imee is in a critical condition, from
ie unfortunate accident mentioned a
3w days since. We sincordy hope for a
ivorable change.
—March comes in as gentle as a suck-
g dove.
—Business lias about suspended till tho
tirtu.
| —Edifying to see “Treadwell" mar
ling tho black cohorts to suppoit us
[ood a Democrat as anybody.
— “To the victors belong the spoils.”
