Monday night, n young man, W. C.
Hines, from llainltridgt*. Ga., en route to
Colorado, under pretence of guiding huu
to the Kunkiu House, was led to the out
skirts of the city by it young man, who
hud ingratiated himself into his favor.
Arrived there, tho guide drew a pistol
and forced Hines stranger to Columbus)
to deliver all the money he had—some
leu dollars. Fortunately he hod loft most
of his money at the hotel. Descriptions
wore given to officers Cash, St. Clair and
Wood, and last night they arrested Rob
ert Pryor (white < and lodged him in tho
Guard House. Hy diligent inquiry they
ascertained he was the companion of
Mines. Pryor will have a hearing thia

Yesterday numbered the fourth day of
the rains. Those of last afternoon were
as heavy as any that have poured down,
and late at night they were still descend
ing, with little prospect of cessation. Tho
drenching and continuous hath has been
accompanied with considerable lightning
and thunder.
Gardons have been greatly injured. In
lower places they appear like shallow
lakes. Many collars are full of water.
The streets are saturated worse than a
sponge.
THE BBIPOES OVKIl THE KIVKII.
At 7 o'clock last night tho river lacked
some two feet of being as high as in 1882,
and was still rising. Nome large loga
were floating down, and parties wero busy
going out in boats to catch them. Hun
dreds visited the stream during the day.
The waters have risen at least thirty foot
Hinco Monday morning. Though over the
brick piers, the waters yot have to mount
some ten foot beforo reaching the bridge
flooring. Tho structures are not regarded
as in danger.
The river hus backed Girard creek to a
level with the short bridgo ovor thore. It
is considered sufo, unless more torrents
are ahowored down.
Tho latest reports are that all the
streams in the country are fiHed to over
flowing, hut thus far no damages to
bridges have boon roported.

No trains went out or arrived yester
day, save those in the oarly morning.
Tho bridges aud track aro reported all
right, up to the latest accounts. The
passeugor train from Montgomery was
detainud at Hhortors, situated in a low
flat section of country, some twenty-five
miles from Montgomery. About a mile
of track iu tliifl vicinity is submerged, so
as to put out ongiuo fires, if an attempt
to cross was made. Huporintqudent Hall
rebuilt nonrly every bridge last fall, and
put the road bed in first class condition.
Hoadiuiislei' Heard and his forco have
been on the lookoutsinco Saturday night,
and despito one of the most terrible
froshots that hus ever been known, tho
road has stood it oupitally. No trains
left lost night, though tho traok hetweon
hero and Opelika shows not a single
flaw.
A rumor was circulated late last aftor-
noou that the rnilroad bridge at West
Point had been washed away. Telegrams
received from West Point at <> a. m.,
some two hours nftor tho seusation was
issued, say the river is out of its hanks at
that placo, hut has done no damage.
THE MOBILE AND OIIUUD RAILROAD.
Yesterday morning tho freight train
which left hero at <5 o’clock disoovored
that three hundred of tho five hundrod
foot of the IJchoo bridge, twolvo miles
holow bore, had hoen washed away. No
one wns injured. It will require two
woeks to replace this structure, after the
weather allows work to begin. Nome
temporary arrangement, will he uiado to
transfer passengers. Tho county bridge
was also swept av.iy. Tho crock arose
twenty-five foot in a few hours, Tho
company lost a bridge at tho same place
in 1802.
Tho passenger train is holow tho break.
No accident has happonod on other por
tions of tho road.
Tho telegraph lino is covered up in
lichee creek, and it is impossible to repair
it until the water subsides.

tho streams aro all at flood hoight, and
tho Htauding Hoy is higher than ever
known beforo.

Tho Harrison froshot washed away the
lower bridgo on Thursday, March 11th,
1841. Iu Match, 1862, the upper bridge
was washed away. Tho present freshet
may surpass them all. Tho bridges are
now much higher than then.

Merchants' and Mechanics' Bank, a large
majority of the stock was represented.
The Directors were voted full power to
sell, lease, or dispose of the property as
their best judgment prompted.
Home thought that Council mighC he
willing to repair the buildings, and if this
was done, the stockholders would, per
haps, be able to raise some $1,200 to $1,-
500 to give a Fair. It ia possible some
such Conroe will be adopted.

lived in a house tliut hns been repeatedly
overflowed. During Monday night a cou
ple of young men took a light aud went
to thia hotiso to see tf tho rising water had
driven out the iumatea. They found them
fast asleep, and the water from the river
and creek in the yard. It was muning
into the well, near the house, wit
sound rather startling. The unoouacious
negroes were awakened to an appreher-
sum of their danger, and before morning
the water was over the floor of the house.
