Dispatches from Washington say that
Wm. T. Heines, OommMooer of Cus

ously damaging to Mr. Biehardson, Hoc-
retary of the Treasury, as regards the
administration of his o&oe.
It is said that in parts of Mississippi
cotton planters are buying corn at $1.75
per bushel, on time. an<^ bacon at 19
cents. It is not difBuult to tell at which
end of the bora they will coma out, if
cotton should bring no more than U

It is stated in came of onr exchanges
that the Internal Revenue Department
has sent inetruciiona tb .US subordinate
officers to euforoo the penalties against

There are two of the floor family now

who has been receiving nearly half the

the other ia George F. Hoar. Tho Spring-

their responsibility increase#. Appleby,
not satisfied with the long years
of his cursed rale in Bussell
county, is again ont for Probate
Judge, we understand. We have not
heard Eiland's name mentioned as a can
didate, but red eeare his hands and cursed
as his intoxicated life mast henoeforth be,
we prefer him infinitely to this week, cor
rupt, ignorant and debanched Appleby,

judicial oath, whose intemperance is only

A party analysis of the vote iu the
Senate of tbo United States, on the bill
iuoreesing the volume of the currency to
$800,000,000, shown that 8 Democrats, 1
Liberal Republican, and 27 Uodicals
voted for it; while 10 Democrats, 8 Lib
erals, end 18 Radicals roted against it.
It i* thus eppareut that while u majority
of both tho Democratic iind Liberal Bon-
ators voted aguiuat it, » largo majority
of the Kadioala voted for it. It wot
much nearer a soetioual than n party di
vision, though Now Rnglaud was the
ouly section uunimounly on either side.
It is asserted pontively that Gen. Grant,
during a visit to Philadelphia last week,
offered the position of the Seoretary of
the Treasury to Mr, A. J. Droxel of that
city, end that Mr. D. declined it. Mr.
Drezel is at the head of a large banking
establishment, aud is said to be opposed
to an inereane of the eurreney. It is now
considered almost certotu tlmt Soorotary
Richardson will scon resign. Hie course
in reference ts the Sanborn contracts is
severely oriticisod, aud his plea that he
signed papers connected with the css,
without knowing their contents is regard
ed as either a subterfuge or an admission
of negligence (hat incapacitates him for
the offioe.
A correspondent of the New York
Tribune is so bothered by some of Frof.
Proctor's calculations, that ho gives ex
pression to a doubt as to tbo correctness
of the basis upon which nearly all nstro-
nomical conclusions are founded—the
distances of the heavenly bodies. Ho
refers to the feet of tho density of (lie
atmosphere upon Jnd near the earth, and
to its progressing rarity as wo nscend
from the surface, aud asks : “Now, will
soma astronomer tell us candidly whether
the distance of any planot, star or
sun has been arrived at otherwise than
by supposing that our telesoopes moasnio
distances through non-atmosphere and
through oouvex atmospheres tho samo as
they do in' our own atmosphere?'’ lie
suggests (end Abe proposition seems to bo
undeniable) k that if an error of ninety
millions of miles wora discovered in the
prevailing computations of the suu's dis
tance from the earth (caused by ignoring
tbe difference of atmospheres through
whiob such bodies are viewed), it would
not be necessary for tho onrth to travel
as muoh faster than a cannou ball as it is
■aid to do to mike its annual circuit.

A dispatch from London, 8tb, announ
ces that “the sovereignty of the Fiji Is
lands has boon formally tendered to Groat
Britain.” It is probable that tbe offer
will be accepted, booause Greet Britain
has heretofore sought the acquisition of
those islands, and bee not keen in tbe
habit of declining tho aooeptanoe of any
such property. She sought it when she
was engaged iu the “wild hunt" after
new oottou growing territory. It is
doubtful whether tho islands could profit
ably produco cotton, ns they are within
tho tropics, lying between the 15th and
90th degrees of latitude south of the
equator. But Great lltitaiu has tried the
experiment iu localities not more promis
ing.
The Fiji Islands number over one
hundred in all, of all sizes between the
snnd-bnr of a few acres aud an island as
largo as Jumsica. Tbe inhabitants are
savages, and up to quite e xaoent period
they were cannibals. Perhaps they would
lie yet, if a fair opportunity offered, but
their present Ktog has professed Christ,
ianity, and of course opposes cannibal,
ism. His reign, however, has not been a
quiet one ; he has had muoh trouble with
those of the natives who properly belong
to bis government, as dell as with Un
subdued savage tribes who ere always
menacing bis dominions : and it is more
than probable that those internal troubles
have had moro than anyting else to do
with tho tender of tbe sovereignty of the
islands to Great Britain.
The following was telegraphed Monday
night as a report of Gen. Grant's utter,
aucos, presumed to have been made on
Monday, when the House was engaged in
voting on tho bill to increase the amount
of tho* currency: “Gr*nl ha;
BSya that he is
opposed to iuflation iu tbe general accep
tation of the term, bnt that he has given
no opinion as to the measures pending in
Congress and indicated no line of Execu
tive action. Apart from hie own ideas of
solf-reepeot, be thinks it would be im
proper, if not offensive for him to inti-
■uato to Congress what he proposed to
do."
According to our observation from this
distant standpoint, the opponents of an
increase of the currency have, within the
last few days, been gaining more oonfl-
denco that tho bill will be defeated. \Ve
cannot with certainty tell what influences
have so re-animated their hopes.

By telegraph to tho Tribune.)
Washington, April, 7.—The Republi
cans in tbe House looked Very solemn to
day over tho news from Connecticut. The
members who come from close distriotB
wore especially low -spirited, fancying that
they saw in the result a sure indication of
their own defeat next fall. Mr. Cox,
iu his speech on the Currency bill,
took occasion to refer to the overwhelm
ing Domceratie victory iu his witty mau
uor, aud made » good deal of fun at the
expense of Gen. Hawley, who sat near
ki.u, aud whose countenance bad been es
d smal all day as if ha bnd just come from
a funeral. Mr. Hawley’s disappointment
at the crushing defeat bis party lias
suffered, and at the consequent annihila*
tion of his own Senatorial hopes, was so
keen that he could not appreciate Mr.
Cox's jokes, und responded to them with
a smile that looked grim and forced.
