The committee from Columbus intends
leaving, we understand from one of them,

to iufiuenee Congress to make on appro

Owing to the faot that Mre. Williams
wee the originator of Southern Memorial
Associations,, and always among the most
prominent of ladies in every good end
generous work,' the Oolnmbua Guards,
through their Captain, tendered their ser-
vioea to the family as a military osaort
daring the faaewl exercises, and the offer
has been aeeop’ted. The company will
tnrn ont m citizens dress, with military
oap. The funeral takes plaoe at 10:30 a.

Few ladies haws
usefulness and honor M Mm. Charles
Williams, who breathed bar last at tho
residence of her son, on Tnesday night
Many have suffered alike with hat, and
seen their oherished hopes and loved ones
down never to rise agstu amid the
amoks of battle, but non* labored on to
accomplish the freedom of her section
with greater self-abnigatlon, nerve, per.
Bistenee of will and intelligence. Bbo
was framed in the mould in whioh hi
are made. Columbus mourns for one
who was noble in every attribute of wo
manly graoe and manly endeavor.
Mrs. M. A Williams wee born in Bald
win oonnty, Go., on Angoet 10, 1821, and
henoe waa over fifty-one yeas* of egg.
Her father wee Major Jack Howard, a
man of strong abilities and targe wealth,
who wee distinguished in the ante beUum
railroad history of our city.
She married Major Charles 3. Williams,
after the return of the Georgia regiment
from Mexioo, on July 13th, 1847. Ttt
regiment wee encamped here previous to
its departure for the battle fields for the
famed lands of tbe Monies tun as. She
presented tbe regiment with a flag pre
pared by tbe ladies of Golombhs. Tho
patriotism of a brave lady may in
degree be imagined, when it ta refloated
that among thoaa roused to her country's
call and stirred to deeds of daring, was
bar betrothed husband, whoa# loss in
1862 she has never ceased to mourn. A
eon and two daughters blessed their
union, bnt tbe warmest emotions of
heart have long since boon buried ia the
dear one’s grave.
During Confederate daya Mrs. Williams
inaugurated tbe “Soldiers' Home” la Co
lumbus, which led to similar establish
ments in all the Southern cities. Its ob
ject was to cere for tbe eiok and wonndad,
and the families of the Boldiers of oar
army. Though bar husband, Charles 3.
Williams, Colonel of the First Georgia
Regiment, died in 1862, she remained
untiring daring the entire war, aotive in
enterprises to assist the soldiers and the
government. Her only eon she sent to
the field when only e youth.
Feaoe found herself and family reduced
like thonsenda of others—from opnlenoe
to comparative poverty; but still Bbe lost
none of her lova for the Lost Oat|se.
Early in 1866 the published in the Co
lumbus Sun a communication urging that
the women of the South should unite in
deoorating the graves of the Confederate
dead, and suggested the 26th of April as
Bnitable time, because then the lest targe
army of the South, that nnder Gen. J. E.
Johnston, waa anrrendared, and with it
the laat hope of our oonntry wee abandon
ed. The suggestion was universally adopt
ed. The day in Virginia and some other
8tatee ia observed on May 10th, 'the anni
versary of the death of Stonewall Jaok-
hou, on aeoonnt of flowers not blooming
as early aa in the South Atlautio and Gulf
States. She was corresponding secretary
of the Oolnmbns Memorial Association to
the laat.
She was also mainly instrumental in
organizing tbe “Masonio and Orphans’
Home of Georgia," of whioh the Georgia
Legislature elected her a Trustee. Until
her death she was Chairman of tho Board.
A large sohool of orphaned Confederate
boys and girla in Atlanta are now enjoy
ing the benefits of this institution. She
was also elected by the Georgia Legisla
ture n Trustee, in connection with Mre.
Mary Green, of Resaoa, to receivo ail
money appropriated by tho State to re
move the Confederate deed to appointed
cemetorioa.
For more thau twenty yeare she has
been a member of the Trustees of ths
Columbus Orphan Asylum, and twenty-
eight yeare a consistent member of the
Mothodist Church.
Mrs. Williams was a lady of remarkable
Btreugth of will and poeseBeed of high in
telligence. Tbe fortunes of war daunted
cot her energy, or faltered her untiring
pnrpone. She was a truo wife, moth
er, Christian and friend—one who blessed
and made happier the world by having
lived in it. In heaven she has rejoined
the husband to whom on earth heart and
aonl were devoted.

enjoyed.
The orohestre was furnished by tbe Co
