Escape.
Mr. George Godfrey, s young man who
resides at Uuerryton, Ala., started ont
alone early Wednesday morning on
hunting expedition in tho direction of
Ilurtvillo. He had not procuedod far in
a swamp on Ool. Gaehet's plantation be
fore he discovered a large wolf making
towards him with fearful rapidity. He
fired his gan at the animal at tbe distance
of twenty paces, but missed his aim. He
fired the second barrel when the wolf was
in ten steps. This took effort id the
animal's shoulder, bat without mhoh
effect, as tho gun was loaded with small
squirrel shot.
The wolf undaunted sprang on his vic
tim with all the ferocity natural to suoh a
beast, when in a ravenous state. Ur.
Godfry nsod his gun with all tho dexterity
and skill of a brave man. The wolf in
bis first leap seized Ur. G. by the left
arm, burying its claws deep into his left
jaw. Mr. G. sprang to tha right, tear
ing nway the hold of tha animal, and
nearly severing an artery. He nearly
felled the boast to the ground, bat before
he could strike a second time, the wolf
was on him again, forcing Mr. G., who
from Iosb of blood was quite weak and
greatly exhausted, to the ground, lacora
ting his arms, breast and face with fright
ful goalies.
Ur. G. mads a desperate effort and re,
gained his foet, and inflicted another blow
on the animal, which so stunned it that
the monster withdrew eullenly from'the
oontest.
Ur. G., uesrly exhausted, managed to
make his way beck So the railroad, where
. ho seoured assistance which enabled him
to return home.
Dr. Reynolds, who dressed the wounde,
pronounced none of the wounds danger
ous, except one near the heart, whioh '
supposed to have been canoed in the las
encounter. The ooudition of Mr. G. is
very oriticsl, but hopes are entertained of
bis speedy recovery. He ie n young man,
and a useful member of aooioty.
Several young man and experienced
Florida hunters have gone in pursuit of
the wolf, and expect to oome up with it
iu one of the plantations of Col. Gachet.
Mr. Perry Spencer and Dr. Persona
have had frequent depredations on their
hogs by some wild animal* in and around
their plaees.
Tbe prospects are that the wolf may be
oaptnred, as all tbe hunters in the country
aro very ambitious of effecting its oap
lure.

An Important Local Anutceriary,
Yesterday nine yearB ago, Gen. Wilson,
of tho Federal Army, discovered Colum
bns. With twelve thousand well-mounted
and well-drilled cavalrymen, be ran over
the breastworks and the few regular troops
and “meelish” that wore stationed there,
and entered the city. The story has keen
too often told for its repetition here. By
bis order there was a grand conflagration
of cotton, manufactories, machine shops,
depots, and almost every industrial in
terest.
Colnmbns lost in a few honra some
twenty-five millions of property, sixty
thousand bales of cotton were burned,
and five cotton factories, together with
ths finest maohine shops in the South.
Lost night nine years ago the boys in
gray and eitizens were trotting around
lively, while the bullets of the blue clad
raiders whistled after them.
