Turkish military in charge of the Temple
( t Bethlehem, in order to keep the Chris-
liana of tbe different confcbaiona from
breaking their necks against one another,
erplainwl to the leader that the Latin
ejurgy bad, it ia true, the right of ^passage
through this gate, hot thut under present
relations they must take their wsy through
the portal of the Latin Gonvant, which
laada into the church itself. Thereupon
Iks mass of pilgrims fell upon tiro (roups,
aimak tbe omuers aud maltreated the sol
diers. When the C.Mriot Superintendent
appeared and was about to interfere, he
did not oome off much better. In oouse-
qneuoe of iheae aoaodaioua proceedings,
awamonicatiuns are going on between
the Porte and the French Consulate.
It was merely owing to the surprising
aelf.cnmmand of the i'arkiah troops Ihst
tbs holy place was not bathed with Chris
tian blood.
To Stop tbs Flow or Blood.—An ex
change lays there is no better use to make
of fine-ont tobacco than to bind it upon a
gash wonnd, and nothing will stop tha
flew of blood quloker.
Gsw Sslvc.—Ona quarter pound
lard; uue ounce rosin; one onnoe bees
wax; one draobm verdigris; melt and stir
well. This is one of tbe brat silvts
known for old sores, uloers, oauoers,
scrofulous auras, cute and wonnds.
dairies IiiKiMNT.—Two ounces aloo-
hol; one drachm tincture arnica. Un
equalled for pains in the feet end limbs
from walking; for all fresh or reoent
sprains, brnses or confused woundB, and
for rheumatism of tbs joiuta and goaty
pains.
BrrrFns.—Taka boneset, wild cherry
bark and poplar bark; make an infnaiou
by adding a quart of warm water; let it
oool, and drink when thinly. Thia i, a
certain cure for fever and ague. The
writer received it from an Indian, and
found it to be Ibe master of agne.
Eibis.—From various American and
English data concerning anresthetics, it
aeeuia that ether ie regarded as far safer
than chloroform. It is stated, as tbe re
sult of experiments and the comparison
of facts, that chloroform is eight times as
dangerous as ether.
Toothache.—Nearly everybody has s
oars for the toothache. Try this recipe:
Take equal parts of pulverized slum and
salt (Saturate a piece of cotton with
hartshorn, oovsr with the mixtnre, and
put in the tooth. Sometimes hartshorn
alone will give relief.
Wash Application.—For restoring
warmth to tha sick, corn meal heated and
placed in bags ia said to be superior to
hot-water bottles and other application*
of that aort. Its advantages are, that it
weighs less, retains hast longer and does
not obill the patient with eold.
Filons and Bohtx Nails.—For the past
ten years (writes a physician) I have
treated felons. with hot water, and with
unerring success. No cutting, no blister
ing, no anything, bnt immerge tbe Anger,
hand, or even tne whole arm if neressury,
in water aa hot as can be borne, uutii the
pain is gone and the oore is lousened and
drawn from the bone. When rusty nails
have produood wouuda, tbe satire course
has bean pursued. If ou the baud or
foot, keep it io hot water,
Coens.—A French medioal journal re
ports the cure of the most refractory
corns by the moruiug aud evening appli
cation, with a brush, of a drop of solu
tion of the percbloride of iron. It states
thst, afler a fortnight's continued appli
cation, without pain, a patient who had
suffered mariyrdum for near forty years
from a most painful corn on the inner
side of each little toe was entirely reliev
ed; pressure was no longer painful, and
the cure seemed to be radienl. Other
and similar cases are reported as equally
tnecessful under this treatment.
Constipation.—Many feeble people
and invalids who are troubled with con
stipation of the bowels may be perma
neatly benefltted by using a vary little of
tha oommon tinotnre of uux vomica. A
druggist will give half an onnoe for five
oents; then put two drops into about
half an ouaae of cold water, and keep it
for uae. Each day when it is needed, put
one drop into a part of a tumbler of cold
water and driok it all, several times dar
ing tbe day. Do not take any more than
Una in one day; but it may be oominusd
each day until permanently cured. Gia-
ham bread aud a vegetable diet are
great help for this trouble; but they are
not agreeable to some people’s tastes, sod
are not easily obtained by many who
know that they might be benefltted by

—A young man who was married in
Detroit six months ago has just j fined in
the disouasion of the question of family
economy, bat his little conti ibatioa is far
from satisfactory. “I do not,” he says,
“understand how it is. I used to figure
it oat, as i sat with my arm arouod her
waist on Sunday nights, and all it would
then cost to live would be two dollars and
seventy-five ceuts a week, and now I
spend fifteen dollars and am hungry half
the time.” Brute !
—In a Southwestern town recently a
