Tax Savannah Neut, of Thursday, says:
We learn that Harry Watkins has leased
the Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah,
Maoon, Augusts and Atlanta theatres for
the coming season, and is now making ar
rangements with different oompaniaa to
play alternately. .
Tux policemen who lately pent at
the Bio Grande into Moxioo, to arrest
Hamilton, the Jemoy City defaulter, have
returned without him. They got on the
trail of Hamilton, but discovered that
there was a defect in their papers, which
would not authorise his arrest on Mexican
soil.
Tax Atlanta Herald says that Mr. B. J.
Woods has struok a rich vein of copper
ore on his land near LaGrange. He sent
two toua of the ore to Baltimore, and it
netted him $40 per ton, and was pro
nounced the richest ore ever sent there.
It is said that one man can get out two
tons a day. Mr. W. has borrowed money
enough in Baltimore to work the mine
suooessfully.
Tan Gainesville Adeertieer calls the late
proprietor of that paper a “Washington
oity dead beat.” A few weeks ago, when
ws stated that the late proprietor was
from Washington city and had oome to
Georgia to buy up a Democratic paper
and make it a Bsdioal sheet, the Adttr-
titer said that he was not from Washing
ton, and that we ought to have known it;
and the Advertiser then had the same ed
itor that it now has ! Unless this oan be
explained, we shall be forced to tbs con
clusion that two “dead beats" have been
oonneeted with tho Advertiser.
Jibs IIahilson, the negro who whipped
ont Bara liioo, Ben Lane Poeey and Bus
kin, at the Mobile Badicel meeting, is said
by the Montgomery Advertiser to be the
smartest man of bis race in Alabama.
Hs at first acted politically with the Dem
ocrats, his sagacity telling him that was
the beat course for bie race to pursna.
But tha negroea would not go with him—
ostracised, denounced and threatened blm;
and aa the Ku-Ktux law afforded him no
protection against his own ooior, dare
finally gave way to the presanre, and is
now an ultra Badioal.
Tnn Badioal Convention of the 5th
District nominated Hon. James 0. Free
man for Bepresentative to Congress, es it
was expected to do. Only six of the
twelve oountics of the District (just
enough to make a quorum) were repre
sented, and all the dolegalos exoept two
were negroes. Freeman's late vote for
the Civil Bights bill brought tha politics
of the Diatriot to this complexion—only
the counties in which the negroes have
a strong vote being represented. DeKalb
was represented by an Atlanta negro, aa
a “proxy." All the talk in the Conven
tion was of “Civil Bights." Loohrane
will probably get the white Badioal vote
of the Diatriot. The Democrats ought to
oerry it easily.
On Wednesday morning a stranger in
Savannah, whose real name appears to
have been T. J. Baebanen, though ha
had passed by the names of Harper and
Brooks, shot and killed himself at bia
boerdiug-houee. Hs stated that be lived
In Okalona, Mias., and had a wife
and ehildren there; that he left that place
last spring and went to Now Orleans to
purchase goods, where be was oheated
ont of his money by gamblers, and killed
one of them with a ruler; that detectives
arrested him, but he bribed them to let
him esotpe, and, fearing to return
Okalona, has been a fugitive ainoe that
time. Letters in his possession, and a
dispatch received from Okalona sinoe his
death, confirm a portion of his state
ments.
Haas is auotber reckless assertion by
the Gainesville Adrertiser, the Badioal
organ of North Georgia, whoro there are
a very few negroes, but in some counties
a considerable number of white Badioala:
“There are not fifty colored men in
Georgia who are in favor of the provi
sions of the Civil Bights Bill. They
don't want mixed schools, nor any other
sort of social equality mixture with the
white people."
It is strange that that negro Conven
tion at Griffin, the other day, was so
empbatie in support of the Civil Bights
bill, and nominated Freeman for re-elec-
lection to Congress after he had just
voted for it.
THE COMET.
We have seen this erratic visitor to our
kystam for two nights in succession. It
oan be seen with the naked eye, but pre
sents a dim and indistinct appearanoe.
With a good opera glass it is brought out
much more distinctly, and a tail apparent
ly about a foot in length is seen. On Fri.
day night a small star exactly in the tail
could be seen; but as the oomet is mov
ing rapidly, it is hardly probable that this
star will again be seen there. To find the
oomet at any time of the night, traoe with
tha eye a triangular line from the Pols
star to the nearest atsr in the Dipper or
Grant Bear, with its base or point below
those stars, and near this base the oomet
will be found. About nine o'clock it will
be found west of and lower than the Pole
star. It circles around the Pole, between
that star and the Great Dipper, and con
sequently in the morning it may be seen
in the northeast.

and that while then only about eight to

ths product would be from fifteen to
twenty-five bnshela. Harvesting had
commenced, and tbe feeling in tbe see-

at the proepeot. Wh.t ia partiealarly
gratifying is that farmers are aware of
the immense crop of wheat which the
oonntry at large promisee, and that they
oontemplata and will be contented with
the lower prices whieh srs foretold. The
Cotton crop, he states, is promising, but
oats do not present so favorable an ap

—This is what the Brooklyn Argus
thiake on the subject: It Boys cotton is
likely to advance, if it be true, a. report,
ed, that tbe acreage sown this year is ten
per cent, lees than last year. The prom-
iso for the yield per acre, also, is not so
favorable a. it was at tbe same time last
year, bat upon this point little can bo told
nntil later in tbe season. Planters have,
it would seem, taken tbe very f easible
advise given them and diversified tbeir
crops. They mean to raiso more food
hereafter, and they are right. They will
get as mneh money from the reduced crop
of this year a. they did from the abun
dant yield of last, besides doing mneh
for thsir own snpport. Up to a certain
point Europe ha. to pay our priee. for
ootton. India and Egypt oan raise the
plant, it is trne, and get large yields, bat
tbe land in both countries is valuable for
other purposes, end prices must be good
to tempt aattun culture in either. While
tbe Booth should look npon rice, ootton
and tobaooo as its great staples, it should
not confine itself to them. It should
grow its own food to a great extent.
