that our manufactories are steadily grow

To show the great advantage* of these

There are a number of people In this
world, who pretend to respectability, wbo
every day of their lives do and say things
whioh ought to condemn them beneath
the notice of a bob-tailed yellow floe. We
allade to that large claw of male and
female seandal mongem and eironlatom of
malioione gossip, whose existence seems
to depend upon their ability each day to
start some fresh and damaging report
against the virtue and integrity of ladies
and gentlemen who are as far above them
as is heavan. Haviog alerted a malicious
falsehood, they even leek the manliness
to own it, bnt always aay that they
“heard it." Now, wa don't think

The Mayor being absent, Alderman Jo
seph E. Andrews presided, and dispensed
justice to the following persons:
First in order was a charge of disorder
ly oonduot preferred against Mrs. Chany
Green, a lady of sombre appeatmnoe, the
green only appearing in the left hand oor-
ner of the right eye. Mrs. Oheny said she
was a respectable lady from the “striped
nation,” and henoe oould not have been
disorderly, for her neighbors would not
allow a disorderly person to live among
them. About a dosen witnesses and the
Mayor, ho« ever, seemed to disagree with
her; oonsequeutly she was given the op
tion of either speeding five days in the
guard-house, or leaving five dollars with
the Treasurer. Bhe, when last heard of,
was getting her lawyer to “aarachsrd” the
case.
Juo. McOubbinge made hie appearanoe,
after a night's rest in the
guardhouse, to answer the oharge
of a harmless drunk. He admitted he had
teken one drink, and was singularly af
fected thereby. He was fined ten and
ooat, but be told the Mayor he did not
think it worth more than live, and the fine
was redooed to that amount.
Ben Williams, one of those for whom
the Civil Bights bill is prepared, was put
on bis trial for disturbing Front street by
making his wife “holler.” Every time
Ben hit her over the head with a foor
year hickory, she had no better sense or
respect for Bpn's finances than to holler.
The police heard it,and forthwith Ben was
nurohed to the Calaboose. Hia wife,
Julia Bobnell, said he whipped her for
notbiu', but IV u said she did not like the
ratious he provided for her. Bhe wanted
fried chicken and buaouit instead of baoon
and corn bread. The Mayor deoided
Jnlia was right and made Ben deposit five
dollars and ooata.
A Case of Aatigian.
For the past few days the oolored por

exercised over a young nggro woman who
embraoed religion on Thursday night.
On the day preceding her conversion ah*
was as well aa usual. That night she
went to chnrch, and when the mourners
were called for, went to the front beneb.
Bhe commenced shouting, and soon fell
into a trance, and had to be osrried home
in a wagon on straw, a la camp meeting.
Binoe then she has not spoken a word,
taken a drink of water, eat a mouthful,
slept a wink, or recognised a friend. Bo
