Tbta la doe to the active exertions of Dr. MoCallam of Raleigh. The Montgomery State Journal oom- plaine that ita Local Editor bad to “ran around till be wee tiled” on Tuesday, and oonldn't stumble upon an item of news Why couldn't he Bod otat what the white Radical Executive. gtMei OnMlMeo did during ita two days' session ending on Tuesday, and give ns that news 1 “I)oo Auawa aanonnoas that he has changed hie base from Eofaula, after re ceiving a preening invitation to do so, whioh was so particular as to indicate the very day when it would be healthy for him to leave; bnt that he will still write for the Min from another locality. “Doc” is ao given to joking that we sup pose he is oely making fan at his own expense in this announcement. He has vivacity and humor, bnt there is snob a thing as running even levity “into the ground." ARKANSAS. According to our understanding of the political situation is Arkansas, the tele graphic report that Gov. Baxter was col lecting troops at Little Bock to oppose the meeting of the Constitutional Con vention most be a mistake. Brooks was, at the latest previous aoeonnta, collecting a large number of jAdroeq is the vioinity of little Rock, and Am purpose wak Under stood to be to prevent the meeting of the convention, which ha and his adherents opposed. It was stated by tbeeeacoonnts that the old Judges of the Bopreme Court (Brooks partisans) still olaimed to be in oflloe, and would assemble in Little Rook on the day before the meeting of the Convention (Mon. day last) under Brooks' protection, and doolare the Convention an illegal assem blage and Brookadha rightful Governor. Of course we cannot believe, without some explanation whioh wo have not seen, that Baxter can bo an alder and abetter in this movement. It is far more probe ble that he is eollooting troops to protect the Convention or to opposo Brooks. It is not nnlikaly that the Convention will order a new election of Governor, an Baxter eertainly was not sleeted. But he can hardly roaort to revolutionaiy meas ures to resist j this, after the support which he has given tit the call of the Convention and after its endorsement by nuok an immonse majority of the popular vote. The truth is, the pnople of Ar kansas have now, for the Brat time since 1868, taken the government of their Btats into their own hands, and Baxter must seo that it would be unavailing folly in him to resist it. What a despe rate and oraay fanatic like Brooks, baoked by a crowd of vagrant negroes, may do, is another question. BEEl'H ER-T1 ETON. A dispatch oopied elsewhere reports that Theodore Tilton and his wife have separated, in ,oqnsequence of the latter going before-too Investigating oommittee and makiug a statement concerning the relations between Boaobar and Tilton, 'ills New York Herald of Snnday gives what current rumor reported to be the substance of Mrs. Tilton’s statement, It was to the effect that when Tilton was a quasi-apologlat of “free love,” and was landing Mrs. Woodhull, Mrs. Tilton “called upon Mr. Beecher, as her pastor, and asked him lor his advioe. Her feel ings had been terribly outraged in oonae- quenoe of her husband running after strange women, and publioly announcing that be had become a oonvert to the doe- trine of freo love. It was at that time Mrs. Tilton naked Mr. Beeoher for his ad vioe, aud according to her statement, he advised her to leave her husband. With the lapse of time Theodore Tilton’s free love fever cooled and he learned of the advioe Mr. Beecher bad given to his wife, and to that oirouinatauoe all the present trouble and inistery are due. It may possibly be that this Is the ori gin and oxtont of the offeuoa of Beoobar. But, if so, he oertainly magnified it in the note whioh Tilton has published. His advico to Mrs. Tilton to leave her hus band was not, under the eiroumstanees, such a grievous wrong to the latter as to call for such an agonising apology as Beecher offered. It did not require that he should “bumble bimaelf before Theo dora Tilton ns he did beforo his God” and ask his forgiveness; that be should plead for concealment, “not on his own ac count, but for other hearts that would bleed "; and finally, that he abould de clare that be “even wished that he were dead.” This great scandal may, we aay, end in a comico-serious farce like that; but if sc. people will for a long time wonder at the piling up of a mountain of agony aud repentance to oovor a very insignificant mouse. WAR IT BURR OR PISTOLE V The Montgomery Newt learns that some eggs of questionable soundness were thrown at Chancellor Felder (the officiul who legalized a bogus government for Mobile), while he was making a ltadioal speech in Greenville on Monday night; and that some “bad boys" handled the eggs. The State Journal learns that while Felder was advocating “Civil Rights" three eggs wore thrown into the court-house, and that when he and Col. Seawell (another Republican) were re turning to the house of tho latter, after the speaking, they were assailed by a law-abiding and sensible' people of the State. But we have little doubt that the Journal'! account is greatly exaggerated. We suppose that it will tarn out like the cess of the huge and unso phisticated Arkansan who wan in. dieted for an assualt. and battery upon one of his neighbors. When the indiotanent was read, charging him in good legal superfluity with making an as sault with divers clubs, bludgeons, sticks, do., he arose excitedly and protested, “Gentlemen, there teat a little some thing of thst sr akrimmsge, but you ere making it a d—d sight worse than it was. ” MORE CANDIDATES. Ws are reliably informed that Hon. J. F. Fou, Judge of tha County Court of Muscogee, is s candidate for the Demo cratic nomination for Oongrena in this Diatriot. Gapt. Pou was strongly sop- ported for the nomination two years ago, Ha is n man of ability and industrioas habits, mada an excellent legislator when he represented Mnseogee in the General Assembly n few years ago, and would cer tainly make an acceptable and attentive Congressman should he be eieeted. A letter received by us from Talbotton claims the nomination for Hon. Hugh Buchanan, now Judge of the Boperior Coarts. The writer says: “Directly after the olose of the war, Cnpt. Hugh Buch anan, of Newnan, a real fighting Captain of a cavalry oompaoy, dangerously wounded in the lunge in one of the many battles in whioh he wee engaged, was elected to Congress over Judge Bigbam, of LaGranga, by a tremendous majority, but was never allowed hie seat. Common justice and patriotism alike demand hie election this fall, aa long experience in pnbUe service end politics, before and since the war, proves him beyond cavil tha proper man to represent us at the Federal capital.” We omit the last paragraph of this cor respondent's latter, because it is dispar aging to one of tho other oandidates, aud wa do not Intend to permit our columns to be used to tha exoiting of prejudice against any one of the aspirants. The nse of our paper in atating tho candidacy and claims of their favorite is as much as tbs frionds of any gentleman can claim of ua; and we do not admit their right to thst as a free thing. The Reeeher-Ttltwn Reandal. Special to tho Atlanta Nawe.] Nsw Yoaa, July 14.—The Boscher-TH- ton saandel continues to ba the absorbing topic to the publio, both in this oity end in Brooklyn, lleeent developments give the ease more and more interesting feat ures. Tilton has passed from an attitude of eritieiam to that of deflanoe, and will now go before the investigatiug oommit tee with a statement developing ell tha ohargea against Beecher. Francis D. Moulton, e mutual friend of both Beecher and Tilton, appeared be fore the oommitteee last evening end made a statement. He suggested that the difficulty be settled by both parties sppesriog before tbo committee, together or separately, each taking the responsi bility of bia own uttemnoes. He olaimed to be fully conversant with the facte and evidenoea in the oase, and bald that Beaeher should acknowledge he had com mitted au offenao against Tilton, for whioh ho should, and did apologize in tbs letter, portions of whioh have not been pnbliehed. Beeehar called in from Peekskill yes terday, but has not been near the com mittee. It ia understood that Tilton means to make a direot and open war npon Beaeher, and the statement he proposes to make before the oommittee will not only em brace the apeoial offenses which it is alleged Beeoher committed against him self, but other offenses which nave come to hie knowledge. He will coon be sum moned before tho committee as an im portant witness against Beecher. Joe Howard, editor at the Star, is pre paring a statement for the committee, embracing several important faats. Us says that Tilton was laboring under an hallucination. It is learned that Mr*. Tilton went be fore the oommittee and mada a statement on the subject, against the wishes and knowledge of her husband, and, in oon- soquenoe of this act, Tilton has separated from her. It was reported last evening that Mrs. Woodhull had aant a dispatoh to Tilton offering to oome on from tba Paoiflo coast and testify iu his vindication. DrengAt la Kentucky, OorrMpoiidnooe of tho Courier-Journal. Rocxpobt, Kt., July 9.—Sinoe the oountry wee settled, suoh e drought has not been known. It has not rained for ten or twelve weeks Springs end wells that were never known to go dry beforo have given out. Pastuna inside of en- oloeurae have dried up; the woods have soeroely vegetation sufficient to keep stock alive, and without rain very soon it must be driven off for aubsiatenoe. Corn, the crop tbs farmers have, looks bad, and will be almost a failure. Corn meal is now worth (1 25 per bushel, and very aoaroe. There is no set of tobaeoo, the only staple onr fat mere rely npon for money. The question is a very serious one how meat and bread are to bo had. Every day now adds seriously to the evil praepeot.
