THE COMET.
Clearer skies for the last two or three
nights have afforded a better opportunity
to take observations for Ooggia’s oomet.
But not even its tail is now to be seen
above tho horizon sf lor dark. Baton that
time twilight “pal*. its ineffeotna! fires.
If the train is really going to reach the
earth about the 2()th lost., we will not
have the pleasure of seeing it, end if we
know nothing about it, w* can hardly be
hurt muoh. We aoeouat for thia end-
den dimppearanoe of the oo
train and all, simply by the foot of
its now having come into position
so nearly in a line between the earth and
mid. But it is possible that it has expari-
enoed a catastrophe similar to that of
Whelohal’s comet, wliiob, wa an told, waa
about twenty years ago deflaeted from its
regular orbit and twirled ont intomon
distant apaee by Jupiter's repulsion; or,
like that of Biela'a oomet, whtoh, in 1846,
was divided into two part* by the power
ful heat of the aun, and ita tail aant kiting
beyond human vision. Whatever may be
the matter with him, we have probably
lost sight of Coggia fonvar, and can only
wish him the moat brilliant anooaaa if h*

ALABAMA’S SCHOOL UCPEBIH-
TEN DEBIT.
One of the moat important office* to be
fitted by the people of Alabama, at thair
general election of thia year, is that of
State Superintendent of Education. It i*
an office thet Bhonld not be filled by a
politician, but by a men who has a practical
knowledge of tho work which he baa to
superintend. Wa have repeated indica
tions that many of the people of the
State apprehend this faot and are toting
ecoordingly. Wo have already referred
to the favor with which the nomination of
Prof. E. R. Dickson, of Mobile, for this
office, baa been received. He it a man
who bis devoted bis life to teaching, ia
an accomplished scholar, a man of energy
and plnck, and thoroughly understands
the management of schools. An
other gentlemen moat favorably mention-
ad in Ibis connection ia Prof. Otis D.
Smith of Lee country, now one of the
State Board of Education. He, too, is
a teacher of large experience, a man of
learning as well as method, and his con
nection with the workings of th* pnklio
aokool system of Alabama for the last two
yean has made him familiar with its ca
pacities and requirements. We trust that,
the choice lies between him and Professor
Dickson, and we believe that the nomina
tion of either would ao commend itself to
the people by its eminent propriety that
it would bo supported by a vote consid
erably larger than that which a nominee
recommended only by party favor oonld
command.
orutio party. Man forget, in their partici
pation in thasa personal oontaata, the
paramount importance of the anooaaa of
the principle* and maatarea to which
they profcaa devotion. Thair idea of po
litical triumph it ao Intimately associated
withtba ■neeeas at font* or Brown, That

ter from n prominent Democrat of another
aoanty, declaring hoetility to n candidate

a vary good abac os of obtaining
th* nomination of Mn party, and aCgphat-
loaily (tool*ring that ha would support a
notations Badloal la prafaraooa to him.
W* did not publish tb* latter, and we da-
air* now to enter onr protent against any
each a stand aa this. I* it possible that
any Georgian, aontamplating tbs political
condition of State* under Radical rule
flanking ue on th* seat and the waat, can
seriously entertain a purpose In support
th* candidates of the party that has
wrought soak rule ia tboaa States, antes*
ha can hava hie individual predileotion*
gratified in the aeleotioa of Democratic
candidates ? W* feel rare that th* deoia-
ratlon waa one mad* on tba impale* of
tbs moment, end will not be adhered to
in deliberate earneetnea*. W* moat
maintain Oonaarvetiva ml* in Georgia,
or our ooudition will quiokly become aa
bad aa that of South Carolina or Louis
ians. W* moat oo-oparate with Conser
vatives throughout th* oonotry in the
effort to elect a Congraaa different
from tboaa that hava dona so
much daring th* lest few years for the
overthrow of constitutional government,
or w* shall hava an indefinite prolonga
tion of “Civil Bights" agitations, Xn-
Klnx prosecutions, usurpations of South
ern State governments, trampling down
of the rights of paraona and of States.
In two, at least, of the Congressional
Diatrioto of tba State, th* contest for tha
Democratic nomination has stirred op
snob bitter personal fastings aa to Jeop
ard the anooaaa of tha nominees whan
they aboil have been selected. Wa refer
to the Sixth and Seventh Districts, both
now rapraaanted by Democrats. In tho
Sixth tha oonteat appears to be narrowed
down to Messrs. Blonnt and Matting, and
area prejudice against professions and
occupation* has there been invoked to in
fluence the oboioe. Thera doaa not appear I
to ba a proapaot of a general hearty enp-1
port of either,by the friends of the other,
when th* nomination shall hava been
made; and wa hope that should this be
found to b* the ease, when tha Convention
meets, both will be unhesitatingly set
■aid*, end th* nomination b* given
to come law prominent man against whom
snob prejndio** have hot been exaited.
In the 7th Dietriot, it ia oharged, Hon.
Newton Trammell baa asoretly manipu
lated tbs lowl. meeting* in each n Way aa
to maka his own nomination ran. We
do not know whether thia obarge ia true
or not, but we pareaiv* that it ia anmsing
the indignation of some, and may land to
strong Democratic opposition to him in
tb* avantof hia nomination. Tha Dis
trict ia largely Demooratio, end it would
be folly most egregions to lose it through
personal bickering*.
We want in Georgia * general rooting
np of th* people in behalf of IMr prin
ciples, not in tb* Interest of particular
candidate!. It is the cause, end net th*
promotion of »i«n—especially men o f
medioore talents—that should be most,
dwr to tha people. In a oonteat animated,
by this inspiration and oondnetad in this
spirit, we oonld earry every Congressional
Dietriot in the State. But if tha people
suffer thamwlvaa to ba divided into per
sonal factions by th* maobinatious of
aabeming aspirants, wa may lota several
of the Dietriot*.
