Out of tbe total vote taken, 4,358,

2d5 indicate their intention, on signed

Tlio Journal’s advance poll of the
mayoralty contest two yea's ago proved
a wonderfully accurate test of the real
vote. It was a forecast the fairness and
completeness of which were proven fully
by official returns. This straw vote
was taken with the sarao degree of con

accepted as prophetic of the actual re

Tbe state rate of taxation may be re

The increase of returns from the conn

was expected, and Comptroller Wright,'
who is one of the members of the board
fixing the tax rate, said if the the in
crease continued in tbe counties yet to
be heard from he thought it would be
possible to reduce the present ra’e to $5,
a reduction of 30 cents on Die 21,000

“We are receiving money this year
from many etxraordinary sources, ’’ said

Is what we expect it to be, we will be
able to lower tbe ra'u. Tbe other cotm

however, and this cate we may not be
able to do this. So far the Increase
amounts to over nine millions, and we
expect It to go over twelve millions.
“I cannot say for certain that this re

that the rate will certainly be lowered
somewhat. Last..)Mr a part of tho ap

the rate, and the money which we will
receive this year from the loan compa

Timely information given Mrs. George
Long, of New Btraitsville, Ohio, prevented
a dreadful tragedy and saved two lives. A
frightful cough had long kept her awake
every night. She had tried many remedies
and doctors, but steadily grew worse until
urged to try J>r. King’s King's New Dis

she writes this marvelous medicine also
cured Mr. Long of a severe attack of pneu

Birth-marks which mark and mar the
outside of the body are a grief to every
mother whose children may bear them.
But for every child who bears a birth-mark
on the skin, there are many who bear an
indelible birth-mark on themind. Ner
vous mothers have nervous children, and
many a man and woman owes an irritable
and despondent temperament to those
dayeof dread when tbe mother waited the
hour of her maternity. The use of Dr.
Pierce's Favorite PresoripthMstrengthens
the mother for her trial. With strength
comes a buoyancy of spirit* and quietness

a mother can bestow on her offspring. By
