Timber Exhibit
In an upcoming exhibit, the
Coastal Georgia Historical Soci
ety will reveal the stories of the
people and events associated
with the timber industry.
From the tall ships of the
18th century to the paper mills
of today, the timber industry
has always formed an important
part of the Golden Isles’ economy
and society. The public is invited
to share their connections with
timbering to help tell this story.
Perhaps your ancestors first
came to the Golden Isles as liveo-
akers cutting down lumber to
build the first US Navy ships. Or
maybe a family member was one
of the women who did her part
for the country by going to work
in a paper mill during World
War II. Family stories, as well as
the photographs and objects that
accompany them, are an invalu
able resource to the Historical
Men working at the Brunswick lumber
docks c. 1890. The ship masts in the
background and the railroad tracks in
the foreground show how lumber and
other wood products, such as turpentine,
moved into and out of the Golden Isles
during its booming lumber days.

First came a women's quartet to
sing the National Anthem. As they
sang "and the rockets red glare" we
saw REAL red white and blue fire
works and then "the bombs bursting
in air" exploded with loud booms. Next
came my favorite former Brave - Dale
Murphy - to deliver the game ball to
start the game. (When I was Georgia
PTA State Membership Chairman I
chose a baseball theme and enlisted
Dale Murphy as our State Honorary
Chairman so I got the thrill of meeting
him face to face! He is an exceptional
man who lives his faith and continues
to be a great example for our young
people.) Then the game started with
Tom Glavine pitching for Atlanta for
three innings of no score by the hated
Mets but 4 rims for Atlanta. Final
score - Braves 12 and Mets 1. They got
their #1 fan back as we experienced
America's game on a beautiful day at
the fan friendly Spring Training field
in Orlando. Thanks Scott!

Michele had no trouble adjusting
to live on Sapelo. "The people are so
friendly and make you feel like family,"
she said.
As for the 'commute' to the main
land, Michele laughs. "I wouldn't trade
that boat ride for rush hour in Char
lotte."
She is currently manager of the Hog
Hammock Public Library on Sapelo
Island and is the Community Rela
