Two CCGA students receive Emory Dawson
Scholarship for Academic Performance
On November 30, College of Coast
al Georgia students Sierra Bryant and
Julia Cieszeski became the 39th and
40th students to receive the Emory
Dawson Scholarship awarded by Elks
Lodge 691 of Brunswick.
Bryant, a sophomore at the College,
and Cieszeski, a freshman, were rec
ognized during a special award recep
tion inside the Huie-Wilcox Gallery
in front of family, friends, Elk Lodge
members, and staff of the College.
The scholarship of $1,500 is award
ed each academic year to two students
with disabilities at the College who
have demonstrated strong academic
performance.
Cieszeski is majoring in early child
hood/special education. Her goal is to
become a second grade teacher with
a focus on special education. She cur
rently works as a student assistant in
the Office of Service-Learning. In her
free time, Cieszeski enjoys figure skat
ing, drawing, volunteering, travelling,
and doing puzzles.
Bryant is in her second year of
nursing at the College and is work
ing towards an Associate of Science
in Nursing. After completing the pro
gram, she plans to continue her edu
cation and earn a bachelor’s degree in
nursing, then eventually a master’s
degree.
Bryant’s dream is to work in the
field of labor and delivery and is in
terested in exploring travel nursing.
Outside of the classroom, she enjoys
painting and spending time with fam
ily. Bryant currently commutes to
school from Savannah and the schol
arship will assist with her traveling
expenses.
The scholarship is named in honor
of Emory Dawson who was a student
at Brunswick Junior College, now Col
lege of Coastal Georgia. Dawson grad
uated from Glynn Academy in 1967
and enlisted in the Marine Corps the
following year.
He served in Vietnam with the 3rd
Marine Division and was wounded in
action. He received the Purple Heart
and returned home as a quadriple
gic. Dawson didn’t let that stop him.
He enrolled at Brunswick Junior
College, where he served as student
council president. He was involved in
many community organizations such
as the Disabled American Veterans,
Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars
2558, and his church.
“When you hear of all his work and
investment in the community and or
ganizations, I wish I had known him,”
said College of Coastal Georgia Presi
dent Michelle Johnston. “Hopefully,
one of the most enduring things as
sociated with him and what he did is
this scholarship award.”
Elks Lodge Chaplain Bob Carlisle
said Dawson was a strong voice in the
community for those who are disabled.
In 1997, after Dawson’s passing, the
Elks Lodge decided to create a schol
arship for Coastal Georgia students in
his honor. to participate in this presentation and
“This is part of our Elks slogan, award this scholarship to deserving
‘Elks care and elks share,”’ said Car- students.”
