acid residue. The Georgia Experiment Station says:
“The proper use of Nitrate of Soda is of great
importance in growing cotton under boll weevil
conditions. The nitrogen should be in a quick
acting, readily available form and abundant.”

County, Ga., won a first prize of SIOO. last year for
his yield of 2370 pounds of seed cotton on one acre.

Cotton Fertilizers
and Their
Application
Aa a general rule, all acid phosphate
and all Nitrate of Soda up to 200
pounds per acre should be applied be
fore planting. If, as is often the case,
more than that amount of Soda is used,
the balance should be put around the
cotton after chopping.
Some planters on black prairie or
delta lands find they can omit the acid
and use up to 300 pounds of Soda per
acre. From Alabama east, it is gen
erally advisable to use 100 to 160
pounds of kainit with the Soda and
acid.
The acid. Soda and kainit, if used,
should be mixed together before ap
plying. They may be poured down on
a tight floor in a wagon bed, or even
on a hard, smooth place on the ground,
and shoveled *over three times to
gether until thoroughly mixed. •
There are several ways of applying
the fertilizer, one being about as good
as another.
One planter, whose methods have
proven very successful for several
years past, throws down one furrow
with a turn plow, puts in the fertilizer, •
throws in another furrow from the
other side, breaks out the middle with
a middle-buster, and the bed is ready
for planting. Another method is to
finish the bed, open it with a small
plow, put in the fertilizer, cover with
a harrow and follow at once with a
planter. <
Side dressings of Soda should be
made in cases where not enough fer
tilizer was applied at planting time.
They should not be delayed too long,
however. June 15 should be the latest
date, and sometime late in May or the
first of June 1b better. (7)
