AN IMPERATIVE QUESTION.
A question ujon which much has
been Mid and written, and one
which will comfroct the next Legisla
te re ia the convict question. We
believe that from every standpoint
the calm, unprejudiced miml must
iaeritably come to thia one conclu
sion : The present lessees are accu
mulating fortune upon fortune
from their cheap labor, and there ia
so reaaos why thia money should
sot be eared by the State, and the
convict labor turned away from com
petition with free labor. The qora
tion io 100 broad a one for discus
sion here, but we believe that a cor
net solution of the question will be
to let each county manage its eon
trtcta, aad work them upon the
wretched roads of our Stale. The
recent road Congress held la Atlanta
elearly demonstrates the fact that
the roads must be Improved, and
thia Is a good wav to improv* them
This question has liven discussed
enough before Legislatures in the
past Tbs time has come when there
Is an imperative demand for its set
Uemeat Let the anal Legislators
settle It, and nettle It this way. There
cwnnot possibly be devised a am*
•Bsaliafactory plan than that under
winch the present convict lease sys
tem is conducted. This may be on
saUefactory, but it at least rente a
trial.

Thio question Is being widely)
discussed by tbe newspapers of tbe I
State, and from none that we have ,
seen comes a dissenting opinion as
to tbe wisdom of the plan.
The Chronicle has always lieen in
favor of such a qcbeme, and when
ever any measure is put forwaid
which looks toward tbe education
and enlightenment of our citizens,
be Chronicle will strive to be tbe
first paper to give it endorsement
and support. When the letter of
Hon. W. G. Atkinson, of Newnan,
was read before the Teacher's Con

with great pleasure, and we hope
that bis bill, embodying all of tbe

' a bill that should commend itself to
every thinking and reasoning man.
It will do a great and needed work
for Georgia, and should be passed by
our wise and efllcieot law-makers.

The Woolfolk trial proceeds at Perry
and tbe State continuea to examine He wit
nesses. The general drift of opinion seems
to be that the evidence is very damaging
acamtt the prisoner. Witnesses Brown,
Ystea, undertaker C ay and W. A. Davis, a
member of tbe corouer’a jury, were ex
amined. Capt. Rutherford autjecled each
to a rigid cross-examination, getting very
little Mttolaction out of it, however. T b
trial cannot possibly be conducted thia
week. It is doubtful whether all the tes
timony can be taken by the end o< the
we»k, as only wlUmssu for tbe Blate have
been examined; no reasonable Opiaiou as
1 to tbe result of the trial can be found.

Letter From Mr. Culp.
Dear Chronicie: —While the
ministers of Christ and all moral
ists and religionists are exerting
themselves to tbe utmost to suppress
vice and immorality, from tbe news
in tbe daily papers, it does seem to
me that instead of the destruction
of tbe works of the devil that they
are actually on the increase. Well,
if the suppression of vice cannot be
affected by moral suasion, God will
certainly use tbe more stern and
severe method. We remember the
fliMkl, the destruction of Sodom, and
later the destruction of Jerusalem
by the Rinnan armies. God must
and will suppress it. If it cannot
be affected by good words or gentle
means He will visit tbe world with
more condign punishment. Giml
could restrahi the world and make
them all do the right thing, but the
world would have nothing lodo, ano
he intends the people to do their
part, and it they refuse and still I r
persist in wrong. He must, to main 1
lain the dignity of His government, 1 f
administer to the world its merited w
punis timenl, otherwise His govern- '
inent would soon be no ginernuient r

in allowing us to act of our own
volitiuu, and punishing us for wrong, I
and rewarding us for good acta, but'
Io compel me to do right and then i
rrwaid me for it, or compel me to]

MAKE THE

CHEERFUL!
Now, that the re
sort to the Mountain
Home, and tbe Cot
tage by the Sea is
within sight, it might
be well to consider
if a convenient and
portableset of Lawn
Tennis should not
form a part of the
camping outfit, with
a set of Croquet and
Base ball for a side
amusement. Ladies
play base-ball these
days,and then a lit
tle mental relaxa
tion in the shape of
a healthy Novel and
a swing in a good
Hammock, with the
entertainment that
all Nature out-of
doors supplies,
should fill up the
Summer days with
pleasure and profit,
and restore health
and energy to the
mind and body.
