TO THE PUBLIC.
Douglasviixx, Ga., Nov. 2, ’BS.
Editor Hiar: I see in the Paulding
’ New Era, of October 30th, 1885, the
following special:
“Douglasville, Ga., Oct. 29th 1885.
Editor New Ers —The elee ion on Prohi
bition in this county came off yesterday
with the following result: The rnexpirrd
license ran into next year, bat the James
whiskey ring is broken in this couuty.
Prohibition 543, against Prohibition 429.”
Ido not know who wrote the
above; if I did, I would know better
howto reply. A* the person who
wrote it did not have the moral cour
age or manhood to sign bis name to
it, I will eonde«end far enough into
the infamy and tow iattilude
which he occupies to reply to this
slanderous article.
There is but one of the James’ en
gaged in the liquor business in this
county, and I would trust him in
almost anything that is near and
dear to me. He has now, and al
ways has had, the honesty about him
to do whatever be follows openly and
publicly. There is not now, nor ever
has been, in this county, a James
whiskey ring, or any other kind of a
James ring, and when the party who
wrote the above article penned it
down, be knew it to be maliciously
false and unfounded, and it was dons
with a view, «■ tee then thought, to
lessen tee influence of the James
family. What effect sech articles
will have, remains yet to be sees.
As to the election on ths whiskey
question in this county, I have this
to say: Four of the James’ voted
for Prohibition and five against Pro
hibition. From my standpoint of
reasooieg, I thought it best to vote
for tend so voted; but
while I did r this, I wish it to be un
derstood, that I have notbing to say
against any mad who voted against
prohibition ;he only did as I did,
voted as he believed to be best. This
be had a right to do, without re
preach to himself or his followers.
This is a free country and men have
a right to vote as they please, and I
take occasion Imre to say, that I
bad rather make, sell and drink
whiskey, than to try to publish to
the world a falsehood against my
neighbors.
I don’t think that the James’s
drink any more whiskey than the
author of the above article. I have
three brothers in the county, two of
them never take a drink, the other I
have never seen under the in
fluence of whiskey. I suppose I may
be permitted to say, I don’t now,
never have, and never expect to
