Kemp announces for
Secretary of State
Five candidates vying for two posts
By Ben Munro

St. Patrick's Day is also election
day in Madison County.
Two cities will hold special elec
tions Tuesday due to vacancies at
their city council tables.
Three candidates — Dennis
Moon, Evelyn Patton Power and
Ellyn Trinrud — are running for
Jeff Roberts’ vacated seat on the
Colbert City Council.
Phillip Croya and Kathy Stamps
are competing for Roger Watson's
old seat on the Danielsville City
Council.
There would have been a third
special election in the county
Tuesday had anyone qualified for
a race to fill Hull's vacant council
seat. Paul Elkins left his council
post in September for a successful
bid for mayor.
His council seat has been open
ever since.
Hull will hold a special elec
tion in June if multiple candidates
qualify.
Here are the candidates for
Tuesday’s elections:
Phillip Croya: Danielsville City
Council candidate
•Occupation: Assistant trans
portation director for Madison
County Schools
•Residence: has lived in the
city limits of Danielsville for six
years. He currently resides at 31
Northridge Court.
•Reason for running: “I just
care about the business of the city.
I’m a taxpayer and I want to see
my money taken care of ... I’m a
people person. I love to meet new
people. I've got tons of friends and
I figured I would do good on the
council because you deal with so
many people.”
Kathy Stamps: Danielsville
City Council candidate
•Occupation: administrative
assistant at McLane Southeast, a
grocery distributor.
•Residence: has lived in the
city limits of Danielsville for 15
years. She currently resides at 20
Northridge Drive.
•Reason for running: “I just
want to be able to help with the
city ... to be more up-to-date with
what’s going on with the city as
far as the finances, the businesses
coming to the city and just being
there for the people of the city.”
Dennis Moon: Colbert City
Council candidate
•Occupation: farmer and con
tractor
•Residence: Has lived in the
city limits of Colbert for 18 years.
He currently resides on Hardman
Morris Road.
•Reason for running: "I pledge
to maintain the small, country
atmosphere we’ve enjoyed for so
many years ... I will work to seek
state and federal grants and fund
ing to improve and maintain water,
streets and city utilities without
increasing taxes.” Moon noted that
he’s a member of Colbert Baptist
Church, the Madison County
Cattlemen’s Association and
the Chamber of Commerce Ag.
Committee as well as a past mem
ber of the Colbert Volunteer Fire
Department and the Colbert Parks
and Recreation Committee.
Evelyn Patton Power: Colbert
City Council candidate
•Occupation: office administra
tor for Con Pac South, a distributor
of corrugated containers.
•Residence: has lived in the city
limits of Colbert for "about 72
years — give or take.” She current
ly resides on Third Street South.
•Reason for running: "It’s
something my dad (Dorsey B.
Patton) did for a number of years
before he died. He was always
interested in what was going on
in the town and for the town. I
like Colbert because it is a small
town. I like that community life. I
guess I could say that the town has
given a lot to me. I’d like to give
something back if I can.” Power
notes that she’s living in the same
house her parents bought over 60
years ago.
Ellyn TVinrud: Colbert City
Council candidate
•Occupation: Design consul
tant/event coordinator
•Residence: Has lived in the
city limits of Colbert for 10 years.
She currently resides at 53 South
Forth Street.
•Reason for running: "I think
as we move forward we have to be
proactive about how growth hap
pens so we're not reacting to things
that have happened to us. Instead,
we're setting down some rules and
watching out for a quality of life
that we want to maintain here.”
Trinrud notes that she and her hus
band, Carl, have restored the old
storefronts at the comer of down
town Colbert. “I’m telling people
that I’m that lady on the comer.
That’s how they know me.”
