Coldwell Banker sales associates at the recent Coldwell Banker International Business Conference in San Antonio.
The panel discussion, entitled “Running with the Bulls,” was led by international television news correspondent
Ashleigh Banfield — who is the current cohost of Banfield and Ford “Courtside” on TruTV — and focused on the
potential for success during trying times in real estate. “Chris Shupe is a true leader in the Coldwell Banker system
and has such great knowledge to offer about success in a difficult market,” said Jim Gillespie, president and chief
executive officer of Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC. “We are proud to have him share his experience with our
entire network.” Shupe has been with Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty since 2004. He and his wife, Kim Shupe,
were named the no. 1 Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty Sales Team for total units sold for 2005-2007. They have
also been named the no. 1 Coldwell Banker sales team in all of Georgia in total units sold in 2008.

Second Annual
“Ride to Survive”
set for April 11
Harmony House Child Advocacy
Center presents the second Annual
“Ride to Survive,” on Saturday,
April 11, at the Danielsville City
Hall (rain or shine).
There will be a free Holman Autry
Band concert with bike check-in/
registration at 9 a.m. The ride starts
at 10 a.m. Registration fees are:
$10 per bike, $5 per passenger
(fee includes lunch). The ride starts
in Madison County (Danielsville)
and goes through Franklin, Hart,
Elbert and then back to Danielsville
City Hall. Raffle prizes, food and
T-shirts will also be available,
organizers said.
All proceeds will be used for
advocacy and related items in the
operation of Harmony House, a
non-profit agency that assists
child and adult victims of sexual
assault, according to organizers.
Located in Royston, the agency
provides assistance to residents of
Madison, Franklin, Hart, Elbert and
Oglethorpe counties.

Master Gardeners
to hold plant sale
April 18
The Madison County Master
Gardeners Association (MCMGA)
will hold its spring plant sale from 9

County Extension Office on Sunset
Drive in Danielsville.
‘ There will be assortedperennials,
annuals, vegetable plants, including
heirloom tomatoes and houseplants
all available at reasonable prices,”
organizers said. “In addition to
plants, MCMGA is also selling
raffle tickets for a beautiful
wooden arbor, built and donated by
craftsman Ron Leuthner."
Tickets are $5 each or three for
$12. The drawing will be held at
11:30 the day of the plant sale.

Carlton Junction
Function set for
April 25
The annual Carlton Junction
Function is set for Saturday, April
25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the big
field on Hwy. 72 near the Carlton
Post Office.
There will be crafts and food
vendors, musicians, kid-friendly
activities, and “more barbecue
booths than any other town fair can
boast,” organizers said.

Colbert Canna
Pageant set for
May 9
Spring is in the air and that means
it is time for the annual Colbert
Canna Pageant, organizers said.
This year’s pageant is scheduled
for Saturday, May 9, at the Colbert
auditorium. Entry forms may be
picked up at the Colbert Bread
Basket or Colbert City Hall.
To be eligible, contestants must
be ages 4-6, grades 4-6 or grades
9-12. They must live on a Colbert or
Hull school bus route or mail route.
The pageant information meeting
will be Thursday, April 23, at 6:30
p.m. at the Colbert Auditorium. For

Hull Spring
Festival planned
for May 23
The 11 th annual Hull Spring
Festival is set for Saturday, May
23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the
festival site on Old Hull Road (off
Hwy. 72).
Organizers say there will be a
parade, antique/classic car show,
political recognitions, entertainment
by Frankie and Tina Cleveland,
children's activities and more.
Net proceeds will go to
"There's Hope for the Hungry
Food Ministry,” sponsored by
Hull Baptist Church, according to
organizers.

Garter completes basic training
Army Pvt. Benjamin L. Carter, a 2005 graduate of Madison County
High School, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson,
Columbia, S.C.
He is the son of Michelle Smith of Poca Road, Danielsville, and Scott
Carter of Sweetwater Road, Newport, Tenn.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mis
sion, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received
instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons,
chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching,
rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field
tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot
marches and field training exercises.
Library announces
March news, events
The Madison County Library has
announced its news and events for
March:
•The Spring Book Sale will be
March 20-28, open during all library
hours. A special preview sale for
Friends members only will be today
(Thursday, March 19) from 5 to 8
p.m. Those who would like to work
a two-hour slot during the book sale
selling books should call Ann Davis
at 706-789-2216. “While you are
there, please renew your member
ship or join if you haven’t yet,"
library staff members said.
•The library staff offers congratu
lations to Sara Carter on the arrival
of her grandson Owen Carter Smith,
who was bom at 10 a.m. Feb. 17,
2009.
•On display in the library: a col
lection of cross stitch and crochet
creations of Melinda Home. "If you
have something you would like to
share with us in the display cases or
on the walls of the general purpose
room, please give us a call,” library
staff members said.
•Library sewing group: This
Wednesday afternoon craft group
meets from 1 to 3 p.m. in the gen
eral purpose room. They work on
a wide variety of both unusual and
historical handcrafts in all sorts of
mediums and with members of all
ages.
•Young adult book discussion:
They wifi meet Wednesday. March
25. at 4:30 p.m. They are reading
Dovey Coe by Frances O’Roark
Dowell. The discussion is free and
includes free food.
•Preschool and toddler story time:
"Your child’s first introduction to
reading: read with them and watch
them succeed.” library staff mem
bers said. Story time includes sto
ries, finger-plays, songs and crafts
for literacy-based fun. It is open to
children ages 2 to 5. This month’s
themes are: Race Cars, and the let
ter Z.
•Chapter Book Revue: Every
Tuesday and Thursday afternoon
beginning at 4:30 Miss Jennifer will
be in the lobby reading. Past selec
tions have included mysteries and
comedies for juveniles." Try to drop
in one or all of these afternoons of
fun reading and sharing," library
staff members said.
•Computer Classes: As always,
free and open to everyone. This
month’s classes will give you an
introduction and tips to Microsoft
Excel. Classes are now offered on
Tuesday 2-3 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. and on
Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon.

a drop-in-style class," library staff

•Resume writing and Internet Job
Searching: Special guest instructor
and patron Melinda Dalton-Home
wifi teach two sessions of how to
write your resume and job searching
on the Internet. Home will conduct
these classes on Thursday evening
from 7-8 p.m. "You wifi need to pre
register as we have a limited number
of computers available for our class
area," staff members said.
•Music and More at the Madison
County Library: The library has
received a grant through the Grass
Roots Art Foundation “to host three
fun-filled Friday evenings here at
the library." Friday, May 8, Marion
Montgomery will sing the blues.
On May 15, the Garnet River Gals
wifi play a variety of folk music. On
May 30, Pat Shields and the Georgia
Mudcats will play homegrown blue-
grass tunes. All of these shows will
be in the evening. “We may have
additional artists perform as well as
have food to purchase.” library staff
members said. “The details are still
being worked out but we wanted to
give you the dates now so you can
mark your calendar.”
