The Eloise McCurley Senior
Center has announced its lunch
menu and planned activities for
Monday, March 30, through
Friday, April 3.
Monday - Apple juice,
hamburger patty with mustard/
ketchup/onion, brussel sprouts,
seasoned pinto beans, hamburger
bun, cookie and low fat milk.
Fitness/puzzles/games.
Tuesday - Smothered chicken.
Potatoes O’Brien, green peas,
wheat bread, apple and low fat
milk.
Birthday Bingo/fitness/puzzles.
Wednesday - Beef stew, garlic
spinach, white rice, what bread,
peach cup and low fat milk.
Fitness/movie/popcom.
Thursday - Meatloaf with
barbecue sauce, carrot cuts, okra
and tomatoes, combread muffin,
wheat bread, mixed fruit cup and
low fat milk.
Fitness/puzzles/cards.
Friday - All-beef frankfurter
with mustard ketchup onion,
baked beans with tomato bits,
cinnamon apples, coleslaw with
shredded carrots, hot dog bun and
low fat milk.

Arts Council to
meet at Blue Bell
Gallery
The Arts Development Council
of Georgia (ADCG) will hold its
next general membership/open
meeting at Blue Bell Art Gallery
and Pottery Studio in Comer on
Wednesday, April 1, at 10 a.m.
The ADCG is continuing its
membership drive and encourages
new members to attend, according
to a press release. Local officials
are also expected to be in
attendance and gallery owner,
Tina McCullough, will serve
refreshments.
The featured speaker is well-
known folk artist Peter Loose, of
Hull. Loose is also a children’s
book illustrator and dulcimer
maker, as well as an active
supporter of arts in education.
“His presentation will be thought-
provoking and exciting," officials
said.
“Two Minutes of Fame,” a show
and tell exercise, will be held again
with artists being asked to bring a
piece of their art that they can
hold in one hand and be prepared
to give a brief talk on it. The first
ten artists to register prior to the
meeting will be called on. Contact

“We have such a wealth of varied
talent in our area,” McCullough
said. “With Peter as speaker, and
our local artists showing their
work, it will be an interesting and
fun meeting."

Law Day essay
contest announced
The law office of Warren C.
Caswell announces that it is once
again sponsoring a Law Day
Essay Contest for local students.
All high school students in
Madison, Franklin, Oglethorpe,
Elbert, Hart, Jackson and Banks
counties are eligible. Entries are
due by April 15 and winners
will be announced on Law
Day, May 1. Full details are

This year’s topic was selected
in honor of the bicentennial
anniversary of President Abraham
Lincoln’s birth and asks entrants:

amendment affects their life and
the lives of those around them
every day. First prize is a $500
cash scholarship and second prize
is a $200 U.S. Savings Bond.

Shelter
walk-in rabies
clinics upcoming
The Madison-Oglethorpe
Animal Shelter. 1888 Colbert-
Danielsville Road, will hold
walk-in rabies clinics on Saturday,
March 28, and Saturday, April 18,
from noon to 3 p.m.
One-year rabies vaccines are
$10 each and three-year rabies
vaccines are $15 (must have proof
of previous rabies vaccination for
the three-year shot).
Parvo/distemper vaccinations
for dogs and puppies ($10 each)
and feline leukemia vaccinations
for cats and kittens ($10 each) and
microchipping ($25) will also be
offered during the clinics.
Spay/neuter surgery
appointments can be scheduled
on the last Saturday in March and
in April.
In addition, grooming services
are offered on the last Saturday
of each month, with all proceeds
going to the shelter, organizers
said.

tickets
The Madison County 4-H Club
has discounted White Water
tickets available. Adult, youth
and senior regular season White
Water tickets are $30 each.
White Water opens on May 23
and the gate prices for this year
are as follows: adults, $39.99
plus tax, youth (under 48 inches)
and senior citizens (over 55) are
$26.99 plus tax.
Children under two are
admitted free. Gate prices are

The Madison County 4-H
Club is once again offering
discount Six Flags tickets. Each
regular season ticket (adult,
youth, senior) is $30.
The gate prices for the 2009
Six Flags season currently are:
adults, $39.99 plus tax and youth
(under 48 inches) and senior
citizens (over 55 years old) are
$29.99 plus tax. Children under
two are admitted free, officials
said.
The gate prices are expected
to rise as the season continues,
club members noted.
“Why not plan a trip to Six
Flags for your group at a big
savings and help our local
4-H club with its annual fund
raiser?” officials asked. “Why
stand in a long line at the gates
of Six Flags?"

Watershed
Association
meeting update
The Broad River Watershed
Association (BRWA) now meets
at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday
of each month at the BRWA office
on the square in Danielsville. For

The ninth annual Folklife in Georgia Festival, which celebrates traditional
music, dance and handiwork of rural Georgia, will be held from 1 to 9 p.m.,
Saturday, April 4, at Madison County Memorial Park in Danielsville.
The day-long event, which will be held rain or shine, will include a collec
tion for the Madison County Food Bank.
Twenty visual artists will demonstrate and sell their traditional crafts. They
include: Mark Davis, blacksmithing; Sharon Grist, spinning and weaving;
Barney James, oak and bark baskets; Joan Lurwig, knitting and crocheting;
Pat and Janice Shields, pottery; Jenny Stevens, herbal soapmaking; The
Stevens Brothers, carving bowls, spoons; Michael Hill, heirloom plants and
herbs; Melissa Tufts, quilting; Peter Loose,
painting; Tina McCullough, pottery; Jerry
King, wood lathe; Isabel King, woodcarving,
walking sticks; Catherine Haley, herblore;
Chip Chandler, log cabin building; Mills
Farms, Red Mule com products; Beth Kelley
Zorbanos, com shuck dollmaking; Lawson
Moore, old fashion cookie baking contest.
COOKIE CONTEST
To enter the cookie contest, bring one dozen
of your best homemade cookies or bars to the
festival by 2 p.m. The baking contest is free
to enter and open to everyone. Prizes will be
awarded to the top three recipes. Only home
made cookies and bars will be judged. Each
entry will be scored on cookie uniformity,
visual appeal, taste and overall quality. All entries must register by 2 p.m. on
the day of the festival. Each entry must contain a dozen cookies or bars of
the same batch. However, contestants may submit more than one entry. After
judging, all remaining cookies and bars will be sold to raise money for next
year’s contest. The winners will be announced and prizes awarded during
the festival. Mount Hermon Presbyterian Church will again sell a traditional
meal of pinto beans, combread, drinks and homemade desserts. “These
‘good cookin’ ladies then share their profits with local service organizations,”
said organizers.
BARN DANCE
An old-time bam dance, featuring the Georgia Mudcats with Susan Davis
calling, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in the old Danielsville gym. “You don’t
have to bring a partner or know these dances to enjoy this style of community
dance,” organizers said. “The caller will teach you everything you need to
know. Fun for all ages and great exercise too.”
The festival is funded in part by Madison County Habitat for Humanity,
Water’s Edge Woods, Danielsville Hardware, Sam and Maria DeRaimo,
Graham Law Firm, Broad River Watershed Association, Merchants and
Farmers Bank, Zorbanos Realty and Investment and Flying Dog Productions.
The program is supported in part by Grassroots Arts Program of the Georgia
Council for the Arts through an appropriation of the Georgia General
Assembly in partnership with the Morgan Cultural Center.
