Evelyn Allen
MT. AIRY - Evelyn Allen, 92,
died Sunday, March 29, 2009,
at her residence following an
extended illness.
Born in Jersey City. N.J., on
December 7, 1916, she was the
wife of the late John William
“Jack” Allen and was of the
Methodist denomination. She
was retired from Old Bridge
Township school system as a cus
todian with 25 years of dedicated
service. Mrs. Allen was preceded
in death by her parents; sons,
John C. Allen and Harold Allen;
and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include sons, Kenneth
Allen, Manchester County, N.J.,
Raymond Allen, Mt. Airy, and
Martin Allen, N. Port Charlotte,
Fla.; 15 grandchildren, including
Barbaramarie Pritchard, Toccoa,
Denise Lindermann, Baldwin,
Rae Marie Emans, Demorest,
and John S. Allen, Land O Lakes,
Fla., who were especially close
to their grandmother.

CARNESVILLE - Danielle
Jeanne Hill Atha, 35, died
Saturday, March 28, 2009, from
injuries received in an automo
bile accident.
Born on May 4, 1973, in Los
Angeles County, Calif., she was
the daughter of Danny Joe and
Marcia Hill. She was an LPN
for BJC Hospital in Commerce
and Lee Arrendale State Prison.
She was of the Church of God
denomination.
Survivors in addition to her
parents, include her husband, Paul
Atha; son, Jeffrey Ryan Atha;
daughters, Stephanie, Emily and
Alyson Atha; brother, Charles
Shannon Hill; and grandmother,
Leola Peters.

Eubanks Avant, 60, died Monday,
March 9, 2009, at St. Mary's
Hospice House in Athens.
Born in Baldwin County, she
was the daughter of the late Nellie
Snow and John Lee Eubanks. She
lived in Milledgeville, where she
worked as a real estate agent in
both Baldwin and Putnam coun
ties. After her marriage, she and
her husband resided in Putnam
County, where she was a member
of Harvest Baptist Church. They
relocated to Jefferson four years
ago. Mrs. Avant was preceded in
death by three sisters; and two
brothers.
Survivors include her husband,
James “Jimmy" Avant; daugh
ters and sons-in-law, Erin Nicole
Wood, Albany, Tina Marie and
Barry Collins, Braselton, Mary
Elizabeth and Jason Justus,
Demorest, Amy Sue and Starr
Meeler, Bishop; seven grandchil
dren; sister and brother-in-law,

Barnett, 26, formerly of Winder,
died Wednesday, March 18,
2009.
Born in New Port Richey, Fla.,
he was the son of Karen Bedford
of Gainesville, father and step
mother, Ron and Elaine Barnett,
New Port Richey, Fla., and step
father, Jerel Dobbins, Radford,
Va. He was a member of the
Winder First United Methodist
Church, attended Winder-Barrow
High School, and was involved
in an auto accident in 2001. Mr.
Barnett was preceded in death by

administrative assistant at the
University of Georgia. She was
of the Baptist denomination.

He was
retired from

Carolina
School System, a member of
Forrest Acre #410 Masonic
Lodge in South Carolina, and a
member of Springway Baptist
Church. Mr. Broom was a vet
eran, having served in the United
States Army during the Vietnam
War as a Sergeant First Class.
He was preceded in death by
brothers, Bennie Broom, Mark
Broom, Elmer Broom and Jerry
Broom; and a sister, Bessie
Broom Newberry.
Survivors include his wife,

91, died Saturday, March 28,
2009, following an extended ill
ness.
Born in Hall County on
October 29, 1917, he was the
son of the late James Moses
and Crissey Azalee Stephens
Carlyle. He was a member of the
Chattahoochee Baptist Church
and was a farmer. Mr. Carlyle
was preceded in death by his
first wife, Azzie Dalton Carlyle;
brother, Hoyt Carlyle; and a sis
ter, Arbele Pethel.
Survivors include his wife,
Amberson Wade Carlyle, Alto;
sons, Jerome Carlyle, Clarkesville,
and Kenneth Carlyle, Cleveland;

November 12, 1933, she was the
daughter of the late Frank and
Lizzie Irvin Elrod. She worked
with Carwood Manufacturing
and Fieldale Farms, and was of
the Baptist denomination. Mrs.
Collins was preceded in death
by brothers, Levis, James and
Kenneth Elrod; and a sister, Mary
Elrod.

Cooke, 83, died Tuesday, March
24, 2009, at her residence, due
to complications from a fall in
January.
Born in Canton, on February
3, 1926, she was the daughter of
the late Tom and
Fannie Martin
Tallant. She was
a member of
Rogers Baptist Church and was
preceded in death by her husband
of 52 years, Philip R. Cooke;
sister, Martha Woods, California;
and granddaughter, Patricia Ann
Vaughn. She served in the United
States Air Force and worked as
a statistician for the Pentagon
during the Korean War. She
was a homemaker, member of
a garden club, member of the
local VFW, served as president
of the Ladies Auxiliary for the
Commerce Veterans of Foreign
War Post 5279, served as com
mander of the local American
Legion, was a volunteer for the
4-H Club, a Cub Scout leader,
a florist, an Activities Director
for several local nursing homes,
a chef after having received her
culinary degree in her sixties, a
folk artist whose artwork was
shown and sold in New York
City and Birmingham and locally
in Commerce and Winder. She
was a loving mother and grand
mother, loved ones added.
Survivors include her chil
dren and families. Diane and

and Connie Cooke, Commerce
and their children, Cohen and
Katie, Anna Porter, Commerce
and her children, Jamie Porter

Manufacturing Company. Mrs.
Deaton was preceded in death by
her husband, James M. Deaton;

ters, Mary Sue Sauls and Johnnie
Lou Magness.

United States Army in Korea.

March 28, 2009.
Born on March 28, 1943,
she was the daughter of the late
William Lee and Ruby Ailene
Clack Bridges. She worked in the
manufacturing industry, and was
a loving wife, mother, sister and
friend, loved ones stated.
Survivors include a daughter,
Melanie Foster Phillips; son,
Wendell Foster; grandchildren,
Jessica, Kellie and Miranda
Phillips, and Wendell Foster Jr.,
all of Jefferson; two great-grand
children, both of Jefferson.
The body was cremated and a
private family memorial service
will be held at a later date.

Charlie Freeman
BOX ELDER, S.D. Charlie
Crawford Freeman 66, formerly
of Gainesville, died Tuesday,
February 3, 2009, at Rapid City
Regional Hospital.
He was born December 6,1942,
in Cleveland,
the son of the
late Hubert
and Dorothy
Freeman. He joined the United
States Air Force on June 2,
1961, and served his country
in Vietnam in 1966-1967. In
1976, Charlie was stationed at
Ellsworth Air Force Base and had
made Box Elder his home. He
retired as a Master Sergeant from
the Air Force in 1987 and from
Civil Service April 1, 2008. Mr.
Freeman was preceded in death
by a brother, Clarence Freeman.
Survivors include his wife,
Shirley Gibson Freeman, Box
Elder, S.C.; son, Darren (Jenn)
Freeman, Long Beach, Calif.;
daughters, Anita (Luke) Kochutin
and Tammy Fogle, Box Elder,
S.D.; sisters, Louise (Raymond)

son of Snow D. Cooley of Alto
and the late Willie Gerrells. Mr.

by sisters, Barbara Ann Nix and
Kathy Gerrells; and stepfather,
James Arthur Cooley. He was a
carpenter and was of the Baptist
denomination.

Celia Ann Kirk. Mrs. Good was
a member of Winder First United
Methodist Church and served as
a member of the Myra Clark
Women’s Missionary Circle.
She had a distinguished nursing
career that began as a trainee
at the Scottish Rite Hospital in
Atlanta. Mrs. Good was an avid
antique collector.

Born in Rock Island, Ill., on
September 2, 1958, he was the

Vegas, Nev., and mother, Lois
Oliver, Baldwin. He was a mem
ber of the Catholic faith and was
a United States veteran, having
served in the Airborne Rangers
in the Persian Gulf. Mr. Hain
was preceded in death by a sister,
Dana Fleming.

ATHENS - Jeannine Stone
Smith Hall, 80, died Tuesday,
March 24, 2009, following an
extended illness.
Born in Clarke County on
October 17, 1928, she was the
daughter of the late Ellison Blair
and Lorene Dunston Stone. She
was retired from the University
of Georgia, where she served as a
secretary of the Law School and
Political Science Department.
Mrs. Hall was preceded in death
by a son, Thomas Joseph Smith
Jr.; brother, Edwin “Brick”
Stone; and sisters, Edith Work
and Eleanor Hennings.
Survivors include her husband,
Lanier Hall, Tennille; sons, Ruff
E. (Pam) Smith and Steve C.
Smith, all of Danielsville; daugh
ter, Susan (Bob) Aspenleiter,
Bethlehem, Pa.; stepchildren,
Jerald (Carol) Conley and
Barbara (Emory) Hudson, all
of Macon; brother, Joel (May)
Stone, Alpharetta; grandchil
dren, Apryl Jeannine and Whit
Smith, and Brandon, Trent and
Jeff Smith, all of Danielsville,
Justin Aspenleiter, Bethlehem,
Pa., Tracy Heard, Atlanta, Scott
and Kristy Hudson and Angie
White, all of Macon; and several
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, March 28, in the cha
pel of Bernstein Funeral Home.
Burial was at Oconee Hill
Cemetery.

Athens, was in charge of arrange
ments.
