Former Colbert schoolhouse slated for $21,500 in repairs
By Ben Munro
ben@mainstreetnews.com
Colbert's 83-year-old school-
house, which once housed
grades 1-12 under one roof, is
slated for some patching-up.
City leaders approved a
$21,521 bid Monday night
to repair damaged flooring in
three rooms and the ceiling in
one room of the former school
building, which last held class
es in 1981.
The project will be funded
through sales tax money. The
city has designated that its
SPLOST funds be applied in
two areas — water projects and
schoolhouse improvements.
Althought this isn’t a major
renovation of the old school,
which was built in 1926, it
will help stabilize what’s dete
riorated over the years through
water and termite damage.
“The only other choice is
to do nothing, and it would
eventually fall on down,” said
Mayor John Waggoner, who
attended school in that building
in the 1940s and early 1950s.
The school housed high
school grades until 1956,
when the county consolidated
schools. But lower grades con
tinued to be taught there for
the next 25 years. The city has
since looked after the building
in its retirement.
Colbert spent $45,000 a few
years ago to provide a new
roof over a large portion of
the school, while the Colbert
Lions club put a new roof over
the lunchroom portion.
Now, the floors need atten
tion.
“What it amounts to is get
ting the floor leveled up, (so)
if you ever wanted to use it for
something specific, then you
could come in and put title
or whatever down,” Waggoner
said.
COLBERT STILL
MULLING WATER
AGREEMENT
Waggoner said the city still
has plenty of time to final
ize its water contract with
Piedmont Water, which is up
for renewal.
"It’s not something we need
to rush into right now,” he said.
"We need to look at it from
several different aspects.”
The city has “another year or
two” before having to sign the
new deal, he noted.
In a related matter, Colbert
was without water for about six
to eight hours on Saturday after
a car crashed into a hydrant on
Diamond Hill Road. Piedmont
Water will file an insurance
claim for the hydrant damage.
In other news, Colbert final
ized its contract renewal with
the county for law enforce
ment. The agreement is a con
tinuation of what the city and
county have maintained for
the past nine years, allowing
Colbert to provide its residents
the service through the county
without the costs associated
with maintaining its own police
department.
“For us, it’s a win-win situ
ation to contract out with the
county,” Colbert attorney Dale
Perry said.
The city also approved a
$5,960 bid to install 425 feet of
driveway in the city cemetery.

Veterans Appreciation
Day set for Nov. 7
The fourth-annual "Thanks for Our Freedom — Veterans
Appreciation Day" will be held Saturday at Pittard Park in
Winterville.
The event is sponsored by veterans from Madison, Clarke,
Oconee and Oglethorpe counties, with assistance from the coun
ties and from businesses and individuals. All veterans are wel
come.
“Programs in the past involved speakers, but this year students
from the four counties will thank veterans for offering up them
selves to secure our freedoms,” organizers said.
The participating students and parents are invited to join the
veterans for lunch. Marigold Festival queens will also be present
and will participate in the program, which will begin at 10:30 a.m.
followed by lunch. Barbecue plates, tea and peach cobbler will be
served. Each year, the veterans have been fed by sponsors.
“The only thing asked of veterans who will attend is to call ahead
and get your name on the list of those to be eating,” organizers
said.
Call Ted Ridgeway at 706-540-5675, Jim Kiney at 706-742-7075,

There will be a display of weapons, both foreign and U.S. weap

weight and size of the bullet fired.
“If any veterans wish to bring their war trophies for others to see,
please feel free to do so," organizers said.
