The plague is once more threatening
the confines of Europe. The progress
of the pestilence hist year in the valley
of the Lower Euphrates aroused some
ala m, and the contagon gome weeks ago
hoegan to spread to Mesopotamia, and
sumo the beginning of March it has
reached Bagdad. The new outbreak
shows much of the old and mysterious

for many centuries recoiled in despair.
There is no reason to expect that its
ravages will be limited to the provinces
of Turkey in Asia. Both in Egypt and
in European Turkey the conditions in
wh’ch the plague breeds and spreads
are still prevailing, with little mitigation
since the time when Cairo and Constan

by its attacks. Happily, there is not
the least ground fir believing that the
essential conditions for its reproduction
in Western Europe any longer exist.

7110 following is a correct report of the
sales of sewing machines made by the lead
ing companies dm ing the past four years.
A careful examination of the figures will
show that the “SINGER” have largely in
creased each year, while on the contrary, a
corresponding decrease is shown in the sales
reported by ail other companies. This is a,
highly sat:start ory result to us, and is only
another pr;of that “merit always has its re
ward.”
