Greasing Bnggles and Wwrons,
Greasing buggies and wagons is of
more importance than some imagine.—
Many a wheel is ruined by oiling too
plentifully. A well made wheel will
endure constant wear from ten to twen
ty years, if care is tnknn to use the
right kind and proper amount of oil;
but if this matter is not attended to.
the wheel will be used up in five or six
years, or it may be sooner. Lard should
never be used on a wagon, for it will
penetrate the hub and work its way
around the tendons of the spokes and
Spoil the wheel. Castor oil is a good
material for use od iron axles; just oil
enough should be applied to a spindle
to give it a light coating ; this is bettor
than more, for the surplus put on will
work cut fca the ends, and be forced by
the shoulders and nut into the hub,
nrotind the outside of the boxes. To
oil the axletrec, first wipe the spindles
clean with a cloth wet with turpentine
if it doesn’t wipe without it. On a
buggy or carriage, wipe and clean off
the back and front ends of the hubs,
and then apply a very small quantity of
castor oil or more especially prepared
lubricator near the shoulder’s point.
A writer in the Mark Lane Ex
press gives the following as the desira
ble points for consideration in the breed
ing of horses for farm work :
“ The head should be comely, but
not small as that of running horses, as
it enables the animal to throw more
weight into the collar. lie should be
broad and flat in the forehead, have
neat, well set oh ears, prominent placed
eyes, thin eye lids, large nostrils, neat
neck and deep towards the chest; not
very high in the withers, with upright
shoulders, broad forearm, broad flat
bone below the knee, rather shoit past
erns, good round feet not too flat or
too upright, plenty of hoof, clean leg,
straight back, with plenty of loins, and
ribs well arched, lie should be long
on the back rib and long in the quar
ter ; the haunch should be strong, the
hip well down, the hock joint broad ;
and for a breeder, no animal should be
used that is not free from curb, bog or
bone spavin, splint or side bones.—
Horses with well developed muscles
and good constitution are easily kept,
and can endure great fatigue.”
Tests as to When a Plant
Wants Water. —The marks by which
it may be known when the ball of a pot
plant has become so dry as to require
fresh watering are —the color of the
soil, its feel to the touch, the weight of
the pot. and the appearance of the foli
age, etc., the plant. When well
supplied, its twigs and leaves present
an aspect of fullness and stiffness ; but
as the bull becomes dry, and less able
tosupp'y the waste of evaporation, the
foliage becomes relaxed and drooping,
and if unrelieved, begins to dry and
wither. In plants with soft, tender
leaves, when in full vegetation, this ap
pearance is very striking; but those
with thick, leathery leaves, it requires
some experience to note the change.—
If the latter, on being bent together,
present some resistance, it is a sign of
dryness in the ball.
Diseased Fowls. —Apoplexy in
fowls is recognized by sleepiness, droop
ing, a staggering gait, and blindness. —
the fowl mopes, or, when moving, falls
helpless, ar.d generally dies in a few
hours. The remedy is to bleed from a
veia beneath the wing, and give some
pills of cayenne pepper, and castile
soap. When a fowl has the pip it re
fuses to eat, in fact, cannot eat, because
of the soreness of the tongue, the end
of which becomes blistered and cover
ed with a horny scale or scab. From
starvation it becomes fevered, the feath
ers are ruffled, and it lingers and slowly
gets weaker, until at last it dies miser
ably. The remedy is to remove the
scale from the tongue, and give the
bird two or three pills made of gronnd
black pepper and butter. It should be
fed by putting soft balls of bread and
milk down its throat.
A BALKY liorse is understood to be
an animal which, \ hen h mossed, re
fuses to start Various expedients,
many of them cruel, are resorted to in
order to overcome such obstinacy, and
it may, therefore, be well enough to
please note the California method. It
is to put a rope under thr horse’s body,
behind bis fore legs, and to let two
men, one at each end, draw the rope
backward, as if “sawing” at the logs.
It must not be done too roughly, but
still with force sufficient. The animal,
to escape something he does not under
stand, will scon move a few steps, and,
after a lengthened but quiet applica
tion of such a persuasive process, will
not fail to move on. Repeated appli
cations will work a thorough cure
It is a great mistake to permit shade
trees to stand so near together that
none have proper room for develop
ment. Young tiecs may be placed near
each other to prevent awkward gaps,
but as they increase in size, the super
fluous ones should bo removed, and the
remaining ones will soon show they are
the gainers. A celebrated fruit grower
said it took him thirty years to acquire
the moral courage necessary to thin out
his fruit buds properly. A still higher
degree of courage is required to lay the
u;;e to a thrifty, handsome shade tree,
though we know its neighbors, will be
uwarled il it is allowed to remain.
Drive stakes along the rows of peas,
five feet apart, and pass twine from one
to the other, taking a turn around each
stake. This is much better than
u brush.”
