An exploratory basic computer course
for beginners who would like to feel more
comfortable about computers and applica
tions for personal use. Topics include: cre
ating, saving, recalling, inserting, deleting
and printing word-processing files. Guar
anteed to be fun and enlightening. Disk and
all materials are included in the fee.
CE 502 COMPUTER LITERACY
USING MICROSOFT WORKS
Starts 4/12/94, ends 6/7/94. Tuesday
and Thursday, 7:15-9:45 p.m., SIOB.
Designed especially for the first-time
user, this 40-hour course is an introduction
to the basic operations of IBM and IBM
compatible computer systems using the
word-processing, database and spreadsheet
portions of the integrated program Mi
crosoft Works. No prior computer knowl
edge required. Textbook required.
CE 504 INTRODUCTION TO MS-DOS
Starts 4/12/94, ends 6/7/94. Tuesday
and Thursday, 7:15-9:45 p.m., SIOB.
This 40-hour course is designed to orient
the user to the MS-DOS computer operation
system. The computer user will learn to do ba
sic file housekeeping by deleting, copying,
and backing up files. Without this skill, the us
er risks losing file information. Textbook re
quired.
CE 505 INTRODUCTION TO
WINDOWS 3.1
Starts 4/11/94, ends 6/8/94. Monday and
Wednesday, 7:15-9:45 p.m., SIOB.
This 40-hour course will add to and ex
pand the use of DOS. It gives users an eas
ier way to work with a microcomputer sys
tem by replacing the sometimes obscure,
clumsy, and intimidating text-based envi
ronment with an intuitive, graceful, and
friendly graphical user interface. Topics in
clude the basics of navigating in the Win
dows environment, components of Win
dows, program manager, transferring infor
mation between programs, printing, and
customizing Windows to suit individual
needs and taste.

PROCESSING I)

Word Perfect 5.1 to create, save, retrieve,

CE 509 INTRODUCTION TO LOTUS
1-2-3

Lotus contains a large, advanced elec
tronic worksheet with graphics and an in
formation management capacity. This in
troduction to Lotus includes the following:
creating and revising; using the Lotus com
mand line; entering formulas, text and
numbers; manipulating data; printing; and
saving spreadsheet files. Textbook re
quired.
CE 512 COMPUTER LITERACY FOR
HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS

Allied health professionals are becom
ing increasingly dependent on computer
applications in practically all phases of
their work. Computers are used today in
hospital and clinical business applications,
patient care applications, and in diagnos
tics and research. Health care practitioners
are therefore challenged to learn computer
skills. The intent of the course is to intro
duce basic computer applications to per
sons entering the health care field for the
first time and/or to practitioners who are in
need of becoming computer literate.
CE 701 DENTAL ASSISTING
Starts 3/7/94, ends 6/8/94. Monday and
Wednesday, 6:30-9 p.m., $219. Discount
through February 25, 1994.
This course will provide information
needed to form a basic understanding of
the role and responsibilities of a dental as
sistant. Lab classes will be held at various
points during the course at a local dental
office so that hands-on experience may be
obtained. These labs will include chairside
assisting and instrument transfer, alginate
impressions, temporary fabrication, cus
tom-tray fabrication, x-ray procedures and
infection control. Textbook, workbook and
lab fees are included in the tuition.
CE 702 NURSING ASSISTANT

This course provides learning experi
ences through classroom work, lab work,
and on-the-job training at Houston Medical
Center. Students will be required to show
proof of liability insurance prior to attend
ing clinical instruction. Student insurance
can be purchased through MGT for $17.00
per student. Upon successful completion,
students will be state certified and will
qualify for entry-level employment at any
state-approved nursing home. Require
ments include textbook and workbook,
watch with second hand, stethoscope, oral
thermometer, navy/black skirt or pants,
white top and white shoes. Instructors are
Catherine Arcand and Jennie Hoover.
CE 703 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
Starts 4/11/94, ends 6/8/94. Monday and
Wednesday, 6:30-9 p.m., $97.
This course is designed for people either
employed or preparing for employment in
health care areas. Medical assistants, med
ical secretaries, admitting personnel and
insurance clerks will benefit from this
course. It is an excellent course for high
school graduates planning to pursue a ca
reer in the health care field. The course
will provide an understanding of the need
and reason for technical language, demon
strate how terms came to be, explore how
terms are formed, and build a background
vocabulary in medical terminology. In

CE 705 BASIC EMERGENCY
MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)
Starts 7/12/94, ends 1/17/95. Tuesday
and Thursday, 6-10 p.m., $319.
Students are required to take the
school’s placement test prior to registra 1 -
tion. This course provides entry-level
training for persons desiring a profession
in the EMT field. This 240-hour course is
designed to prepare the student for a future
in Emergency Medical Services, which
usually means working with an ambulance
service as a driver or attendant. This course
has two components: 208 hours of class
room time and 32 hours of clinical time
spent on an ambulance route and at the
hospital emergency department. Textbook
and Liability Insurance required. Liability
insurance may be purchased after the mid
term examination through MGT for $61.00
per student. The clinical uniform is white
shirt/blouse, blue/black pants, black shoes.

CE 707 CREATIVE MATH FOR
CHILD-CARE PROVIDERS

This math workshop will help child-care
providers develop the knowledge and skills
to effectively teach basic math concepts to
young children by using items around the
house that most consider junk, such as lids,
bottle caps, pine cones, bolts, nuts, shells,
etc. You will learn to use these and other re
al materials from the child’s everyday life.
Activities are presented in a developmental
sequence that supports young children’s
construction of the concepts and skills es
sential to understanding math. No textbook
required.

tate and life insurance. It concentrates on the
needs of the conservative investor who may
not have a lot of money but is seeking safe

writing system. It does not require memo

has approved this 75-hour curriculum, cer
tifying the course as satisfying all current
Georgia laws. The class will cover funda
mentals of real estate contracts, instru
ments and conveyances, laws of agency,
pricing real property, financing, taxation,
city and urban development, fair housing,
anti-trust laws, safety precautions, and
Georgia’s real estate license laws. Instruc
