Alicia Long Resigns
From Position With
County Authority
By VETO F. ROLEY
Staff Writer
March 2, 1994, will mark the
end of an era at the Houston
County Development Authority
when Alicia Long, administrative
assistant, leaves the position.
Long, who said she was leaving
the position because of personal
reasons, would have celebrated her
third year with the authority in
May.
"I'm going to miss her," said
Tim Martin, executive director of
the Houston County Development
Authority, saying that Long was
his right hand and his left hand. He
added that Long had a lot of con
tacts in the community and knew
the community well.
Long started as the administra
tive assistant for the development
authority under Dick Ulm. When
Ulm resigned August 2, 1993,
Long ran the day-to-day operations
of the office until Martin was hired
as executive director in December,
1993, a period of four months.
"It made me feel good that the
(Houston County Development Au
thority) board had confidence in me
during that interim period (between
Ulm's resignation and Martin's hir
ing)," said Long.
In the three years that she has
been with the authority, Long said
that there has been a diversity in the
types of industry the authority has
teen contacting for the county. "We
used to rely on the base and the
contracts the base developed," she
said.
Long also said that the county
has come together in the last three
years, working with the Base Re
alignment Committee to keep
Robins Air Force Base open and
with the Department of Defense to
get a payment center for Robins Air
Force Base. "We would have gotten
the pay center if (former Secretary
of Defense) Les Aspin had not
changed the rules," she said.
"Growth in the last three years
has been phenomenal," said Long.
However, in spite of the indus
trial growth that she has seen, Long j
said she was proudest of the per
sonal growth she has had in the po
sition.

Homeowners Can Safeguard
Homes Against Burglaries
BY BRENDA THOMPSON
Staff Writer
Although the Houston County

speaker Sgt. Dees told members of
the Perry Exchange Club during
their regular meeting on Thursday.

An investigator with the local
sheriff’s department for the past
eight years, Dees says that among
the precautions residents can take in
protecting their personal property

•Recording serial numbers of
televisions, stereos, computers and
other electronics and then storing
these records in a safe place outside
the home. Dees points out that
these items are very difficult to re
cover without serial numbers.
