Turkey Season Comes In March 26
Georgia's wild turkey hunting
season opens Saturday, March 26
and officials with the Department
of Natural Resources, Wildlife Re
sources Division are projecting
good hunting.
The current wild turkey popula
tion in Georgia is around 350,000
birds. The turkey population has re
bounded somewhat because of a
strong hatch last spring throughout
most of Georgia.
Turkey reprodactiqn offered the
two previous springs due to heavy,
late spring and summer rains.
Most Georgia counties have well
established turkey populations and
Panthers, from 6A
would wipe Yawn off third.
However, Derrick Oliver would
come through with the clutch two
out hit to score Brett. An error on
the rightfielder would move Waldrip
and Oliver into scoring position.
Waldrip would score the third Perry
run of the inning on a wild pitch.
After getting the early lead,
Perry pitcher Brett went to work,
facing the minimum in through the
first three innings. The Pirates
would have two base runners
through the first three innings. But,
they would be thrown out after at
tempting to steal second by Oliver,
who would cut down three Pirate
baserunners on the afternoon.
Perry would add one run in the
bottom of the third. Waldrip led the
inning off with a double to right,
moving to third on Thad Cook's
single to left-center. Jamie Walker

spots on the soccer and baseball
teams. A few women might have the
skills and athletic ability to secure
the spots; but, they are more the ex
ception than the rule.
Women need a spring sport. I
hope by this time next year, women
have another sport.
I have two suggestions to make. I
would move softball to the spring
and have the women play volleyball
in the fall. If that isn't satisfactory, I
see nothing wrong with having two
softball seasons—a fall league and a
spring league.
Women have come a long way in
sports. However, they still have a
long way to go before they catch up
to their brothers.

PHS Golf Beats Dodge
By VETO F. ROLEY

The Perry Panthers got a win
ning start to the 1994 golf season,
beating region foe Dodge County
153-157 in a nine-hole tournament
in Eastman Monday afternoon.
"It was a good start to being the
season,” said Perry head coach Tony
Thrift He added that the score took
on added significance since the Pan
Wildlife Resources Division biolo
gists say fluctuations in turkey
numbers are normal. Turkey popu
lation levels are dependent on such
factors as weather conditions and
acorn and fruit production.
In 1993, the bag limit for turkey
was raised to three gobblers.
There are currently 85,000
turkey hunters in Georgia. Of these
hunters, approximately twenty per
cent will take one bird, and less
than ten percent will harvest a sec
ond bird. Biologists estimate that
only about six percent will actually
harvest three gobblers this season.
Wild turkey hunting requires pa
rifice fly to left.
After the Pirates scored one in
the top of the fourth, Perry would
answer in the bottom half of the
inning.
Jamal Reynolds reached second
on an error by the Pirates' second
baseman. Cantrell grounded out to
short, moving Reynolds to third. A
bad hop triple by Yawn scored
Reynolds for the Panther’s fifth run
of the game. Yawn was brought in
by a Brett single to left
The Panthers would score their
final run in the fifth inning. Jamie
Walker doubled to start the inning.
He would score one out later on
