Military Workers
On Helpful ‘TAP’
State Labor Commissioner
David Poythress said today that he
anticipates that more than 8,000
military personnel will receive job
search assistance this year in his
department's bid to ease their transi
tion into civilian life.
Records show that 6,967
"transitioning" military personnel
got help through the program in
1992. The number grew to 7,247 in
1993.
"We are trying to make return to
civilian life as smooth as possible
for the thousands of Georgians be
ing discharged, many of them as a
result of the nation's defense-cut
backs program," Poythress said.
"These young me and women have
served their nation well, some of
them at great personal risk. Now, it
is payback time."
The Transition Assistance Pro
gram (TAP) is a joint effort by the
U.S. and Georgia Departments of
Labor, the U.S. Department of De
fense and the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs to make return to
civilian life as easy as possible for
returning military personnel.
The agencies hold an average of
17 pre-discharge workshops per
month at major military installa
tions throughout the state. The ses
sions are used to interview soon-to
be-discharged personnel, help them
to enter training programs, prepare
resumes and begin jobs searches and
to advise them on availability of
various types of state and federal as
sistance.
Also participating in the pro
gram are the American Legion,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled
American Veterans, AM VETS,
Jewish War Veterans and other
civilian-sector groups.
Georgia sites for the workshops
include Fort Benning (Columbus),
Fort McPherson (Atlanta), Fort
Stewart (Hinesville), Fort Gordon
(Augusta), Robins Air Force Base
(Warner Robins), Moody Air Force
Base (Valdosta), Kings Bay Naval
Station (Saint Mary's) and the Ma
rine Corps Logistic Center
(Albany).
