Smith said the return of Powers
to the court was important "It's
real important that she get out and
find out what she could and couldn't
do. We could've won without her,
but, it's always nice to have your
best players playing."
In men's play, the Bears took ail
five matches from the Panthers.
"It's kind of hard to say (if the
men's team is improving)," said
Smith. "If we are, it's not enough.
We haven't broken into the win
column yet.

consistency. To be a good player of

In the fourth, Lon Talton scored
on a Matt Shepley double to left.
Once again, the inning ended with
the bases loaded.
The Hornets would have a final
shot to get back in the game in the
sixth. However, the inning would
end with a runner on second after a
Hornet runner was picked off at
third by Knight catcher Matt Grif
fitts.
In all, the Hornets would strand
11 runners on the basepads, six in
scoring position. The Knights on
the other hand, would score nine of
their 14 baserunners.
"We hit the ball and got people
on base," said Bert Brown, head
coach of the Hornets. "But we
couldn't get the clutch hit"
Brown said the Hornets im
proved over the first game against
the Knights, a 10-1 loss in Perry.

"We hit the ball well," he said. "We
did not do that the first time. De
fense was actually a little better.
We made a little progress."
One of the reasons for the de
fense being better was moving Tal
ton from shortstop to second.
Brown said that Talton had several
chances at second, with only one er
ror caused when his spike got
caught in the dirt causing an off
balance throw.
Brown said that part of the rea
son for the six early runs scored by
the Knights was that Sheldon was
stiff in the first couple of innings.
"I don't know if he wasn't warmed
up properly, or if he was just stiff.
By the third inning, he relaxed and
started throwing the ball hard."
Shepley paced the Hornet attack
with three hits, while Talton had
two hits.
