Neuritis. Bursitis.
Rheumatism. People call problems
with the neck, shoulder and arms by
a variety of names. Sometimes
they blame the aches and pain on
"old age."
But this label doesn't really
make sense because the other arm
or shoulder-which doesn't have any
problems-is just as old. So what
really causes those sore areas?
First, let me explain what
controls the shoulder, arm and hand.
The brain "talks" with the rest of
body through a vast
telecommunications system made
up of nerves. These nerves come
out of the brain in a large bundle
called the spinal cord, they first
have to pass through holes between
the spinal bones, or vertebrae.
Some nerves go straight to their
point of destination, but some first
mix with other nerves to form a

The patronage refund for
borrowers of South Central Farm
Credit will total more than $10.4
million, with 30 percent, of $3.13
million paid in cash. The balance
will be placed in allocated surplus
in the names of individual member
borrowers.
"South Central Farm Credit had
a successful year in 1993, and we
are pleased to be able to share our
success with our borrowers," said
Edward M. Beckham, 11, Chairman
of the South Central Farm Credit
board and farmer from Perry.
"When we distribute our profits
to our borrowers, it reduces their
effective cost of borrowing,"
Waldrep stated, "and it provides
tangible evidence that there are
distinct financial benefits in doing

complicated nerve network that
anatomists call a nerve plexus.
One of these areas is the brachial
plexus near our shoulders. It is
made up of nerves which come out
of the middle and lower neck, and
upper back. After this
interconnection, the nerves branch
off to supply different areas—
especially the shoulders, arms,
elbows, wrists, hands and fingers.
But sometimes, as the nerves
leave the spinal cord, they are
"pinched." Nerves are surrounded
by a ring of bone and tough
coverings. If the ring becomes
smaller, the nerves may be
compressed.
What causes pinched nerves?

such as a fall from childhood
•New injuries like car or sports

People have different symptoms
depending on which brachial plexus
nerves are damaged. One of the
first symptoms may be neck pain
or stiffness. Some people feel the
pain radiate to the shoulder and
down to the arm, wrist, hand or
finger. Or there can be pain in the
arm or shoulder, but not in the
neck. Others feel a prickly "pins
and needles" sensation. Sometimes
there’s no pain at all, just
numbness. Such numbness is a
sure sign of nerve damage!
