Dr. Karen Louise Duncan of
Champaign, 111., daughter of Don
and Joyce Duncan of Kathleen, was
in the area last week visiting her
parents and friends.
Dr. Duncan is a 1977 graduate of
Perry High School and a 1984
graduate of the Veterinary School of
the University of Georgia. She is
pursuing a masters degree in a resi
dency in Veterinary Toxicology at
the University of Illinois which she
expects to complete in December
1995.
She was speaker on Veterinary
Toxicology at the University of
Georgia's Veterinary School’s
Annual Reunion over the weekend.
Dr. Duncan, part of a staff of 10
veterinarians,- works at the
University of Illinois' Veterinary-
Toxicology National Animal
Poison Control Center, the only
animal poison control center in the
country.
Both pet owners and veterinarians
can call 24 hours per day for infor
mation concerning poisoned ani
mals. Phone numbers are 1-800-
548-2423 (S3O charge), or have
charged to caller’s phone , 1-900-
680-0000. Ten veterinarians work
the phone lines over the 24-hour
period and receive 100 calls per day
from the United States, Canada, and
sometimes from Mexico.
The control center collects com
puter data base on all phone calls
and analyzes for trends. For exam
ple, from the calls received during
the Easter season, they discovered
that Easter lilies are poisonous to
cats, causing them to develop kid
ney failure.
