Perry High will
present musical
on May 12-14
The Theatre Department of Perry
High School announces an
engagement not to be missed this
May, when a beautiful Spring
Wedding is combined with an
entertaining Spring Musical.
To Have and to Hold is a full
length romantic musical comedy,
featuring the talents of sixty
"friends of the bride and groom," as
well as the wedding party itself.
Perry High’s annual Spring
Musicals always provide an evening
of fun, while showcasing some of
Georgia's most talented and award
winning performers.
A one-act version of To Have
and to Hold was performed in
competition in 1990 and it garnered
several awards itself, most notable,
being unanimously named "State
Champion" and going on to
represent Georgia in the
Southeastern Theatre Conference in
North Carolina. To Have and to
Hold was co-written by Director
Chris Gillespie and Producer Lisa
Pryor, both Perry High School
employees. This show is one of
two musicals written and produced
by Gillespie and Pryor. The other,
The Lesser Lion, is currently under
consideration for publication with
Samuel French play publishers in
New York. "We're very excited
about presenting To Have and to
Hold next month," said Pryor.
"We’ve expanded die show since
1990, in order to show off even
more of the talented students at our
school—many of whom continue
the success found on our stage, by
pursuing a degree in theatre" she
added. With a cast and crew of over
sixty, this is one of the largest
productions the school has ever
undertaken.
"We could never accomplish any
of our shows without help from a
lot of very talented people,"
Gillespie is quick to point out.
"Chris Raider, a Technical Theatre
Major from Macon College, is
helping with set design, and Joanne
Fanning does all our costumes from
start to finish. She's so wonderful"
he adds "other theatres are always
trying to steal her away from us!"
"Plus, the entire faculty pitches in
to help find props and other
materials that we need.” Pryor adds
"everyone helps out where ever they
are needed.”
Although a one-act version of
this musical has been produced, you
can be a part of history by attending
the World Premiere of the full
length production of To Have and
to Hold on May 12, 13, and 14 at
7:30 p.m. in the Perry High
Theatre. Don't miss this warm and
funny musical, which celebrates
Life and Love.
Plan to give blood
at next Perry drive
A blood drive will be held at the
Agriculture building on Carroll
Street Tuesday, June 14 from noon
until 5:30 p.m.
Due to the drastically reduced
supply of blood, a greater response
is needed from donors in all parts of
the country. Make every effort to
donate blood on this date.

Open forum to be held
by AD support group
By PAULINE LEWIS
Staff Wrltar
An open forum on Alzheimer's
and related diseases will be held in
the Perry Hospital Cafeteria on
Thursday, April 21, from 7-8 p.m.,
with Dr. Alfredo Suarez, guest
speaker.
The Alzheimer's Support Group
meets every Thursday in the Perry
Hospital Library at 7 p.m. A man
ual has been prepared for support
groups. Attendance is in confidence.
Contact Eddie Coffee (987-4364) or
Bill Trigg (987-3744) for further in
formation.
An Alzheimer's Association spon
sored group is made up of families,
caregivers, friends and other inter
ested individuals meeting to share
information, give and receive mu
tual support and exchange coping
skills with one another in matters
relating to Alzheimer’s Disease and
related disorders.
Coming together to share and
learn at support group meetings has
helped many family members
through the most difficult experi
ence of their lives.
What is Alzheimer's Disease? It
is the most common of the dement
ing disorders affecting as many as
four million Americans. It is a
progressive, degenerative disease
that attacks the brain and results in
impaired memory, thinking and be
havior. It is the fourth leading cause
of death among adults, taking more
than 100,000 lives each year.
Fourteen million Americans will
have Alzheimer's by the middle of
the next century unless a cure or
prevention is found. It affects pri
marily people over 65 but can
strike people in their 40s and 50s.
One in 10 persons over 65 and
nearly half of those over 85 have
Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer's disease costs society
approximately SIOO billion a year.
Neither Medicare nor private health
insurance covers the type of care
most patients need, so most of this
cost is borne by their families. The
cost of paid home care averages
SIB,OOO annually, with families
covering the majority of the ex
pense.
Half of all nursing home patients
suffer from Alzheimer's disease or a
related disorder. The average cost
for each patient's care in a nursing
home is $36,000 per year, but can
exceed $70,000 per year in some ar
eas of the country
The federal government spent ap
proximately $291 million for
Alzheimer's disease research in
1993. This represents only $1 for
every $340 the disease now costs
society. The federal investment in
other diseases with similar eco
nomic and social costs, such as
