May 21 is day for '95 physicals
Physicals for all area high
school and middle school athletes
will be give May 21 at Perry High
School. The cost of the physical is
$5.
Chip McCarty, head trainer for
Perry High School and Westfield,
said that anyone wanting to partici
pate in sports at Perry Middle
School, Houston County High
School, Westfield or Perry High
School must get a physical. He said
that there would be no makeup day.
The physicals will start at 6:30
a.m., and will be given by doctors
Spring football coming in May
Perry High School and Westfield
are gearing up for Spring football
practice.
Perry head coach John Stephens
said that spring training for the
Panthers will start on Monday,
May 9. Equipment will be issued to
players May 5 and May 6.
In order to participate in spring
drills at Perry, players must have a
Predictions, from sa

to one pound) whites.
Hybrid fishing should be even
better than the white bass fishing
this year. Try the area around Cedar
Creek to land some one pound
hybrids. A good year class of
hybrids was established by the 1993
stocking and should provide
excellent fishing opportunities for
the next two-three years.
Crappie fishing should be good
this year from the end of January to
mid-March, and then again during
October and November. The most
crappie are around Cedar and Gum
creeks, however anglers are also

Although 1994 ended with dis
appointment, Thrift said he was
looking forward to 1995. Of his top
seven golfers, six are underclass
men, including Stan Gann, who
holds down the number one spot on
the team.
"We are stepping down to AA at
the right time," said Thrift. "If we
work on our games like we can
(over the summer), we can be ex
ceptionally competitive in AA. I
would be disappointed if we were
not."
Gann, who was low medallist
for the the region last year, was un
able to retain his title, running into
trouble over the first nine holes of
the course. However, Gann finished
the nine holes with a 36, giving
him a total of 77.
While Gann's 77 was tops on
the Panther team, he finished seven
strokes behind Ben Newton of Ware
County, who won low medallist
recognition with a 70. "It was one
of those up and down days," said
Thrift of his top golfer.
Andrew Willard was the only
other Perry golfer to finish with a
score in the 70s, finishing the day
with a 78.

Bream fishing should be good to
excellent especially when fish are
on the beds during the spring. Last
spring we found that many of the
spawning beds were located in the
sloughs and creeks, and over 85
percent of the shellcrackers
(redears) and 29 percent of the
bluegills were hand sized or larger.
The majority of large
shellcrackers will be collected north
of Highway 28-. This area will be
your best bet for bream fishing.
Fishing should be excellent for

He added that he would hold a team

Channel cats will be abundant lake
wide, with an average size of just
under one pound. Although they
can be caught year-around, they are
most active in the spring.
Flatheads are not as abundant as
the channel catfish, but anglers
reported catching numerous 20 plus
pound flatheads in 1993. Another
area to look for both species of
catfish is the tailrace of the dam,
where impressive cats are caught
with small bream, live shad and cut
baits.
