Changes made
for dry trash in
Perry Landfill
Listen up folks. Perry is having
to change horses in the way we
handle your dry trash. For five
years Perry has operated a dry trash
landfill on Toomer Rd. in
Southwest Houston County. It
was available for residents to bring
their own household waste, and for
contractors to dispose of debris
resulting from work done in Perry.
The city used the facility for burial
of all the odds and ends of debris
that people placed on curbside.
Now all that has changed. As of
April 28, the facility is effectively
closed, until further notice. No
more construction and demolition
debris, and no more household
waste can be accepted, and until
some new approval is received, not
even yard trimmings can be bought
to the facility. Everything must
now be taken to the Houston
County Landfill.
Waste generated from
Construction and demolition work,
from roofing and rug replacement,
etc., must be taken by the
contractors to Houston County
Landfill. Tipping fee for disposal
is $20.50 per ton.
Perry residents are still welcome
to haul their own debris, as in the
past, but now it must be taken to
the Houston County Landfill,
instead of the Perry Landfill. The
county will weigh private vehicles
as they enter the landfill, but will
not charge for small loads. The
county landfill is located on SR
247 going to Hawkinsville. It is
on the left at the 2 mile marker.
The Perry Public Works Dept,
will continue to collect dry trash at
curbside, as in the past. However,
yard trimmings, limbs, grass,
leaves, etc.) must be separated from
other debris. Waste should be
separated into thiee piles; yard
trimmings, household waste, and
metals. One truck will collect yard
trimmings and another truck will
collect household debris, and
metals. Yard trimmings will be
chipped into mulch to the extent
possible, while household debris
will be taken to the county landfill.
Metals will be stockpiled for
recycling.
For disposal of appliances such
as refrigerators, stoves, freezers,
water heaters, etc. please call 987-
1911. Efforts will be made to
collect these items on Wednesdays.
The changes outlined here are the
result of a ddetermination by
Georgia Environmental Protection
Division, in the Department of
Natural Resources. Perry has been
directed to comply with Municipal
Solid Waste Disposal Facility
Subtitle D requirements or cease
operations that were previously
approved. The up front and
continuing cost of these subtitle D
requirements are prohibitive.

Welcome to the Rain Forest
After studying plants and rain forests, Perry Elementary
second graders In Angle Wood's class made a rain forest In
their classroom modeled after The Great Kapok Tree by
Lynlne Cherry. Included In the rain forest were toucans
constructed from two-liter bottles, flourescent butterflies,
vines and a tree trunk out of butcher paper. An audio tape
gave Jungle sound effects, Including a thunderstorm.
Pictured with Wood are students Patrick Koeltzow, left,

NATURAL GAS
If you purchase natural gas from the City of Perry and should you have a gas leak in
your home or business, you should immediately notify the City Hall. Their phone
number is 987-1911. The gas you bum in your home or business is colorless and
odorless. If it should leak it would present a hazard. Because gas is normally odorless,
a special odor is introduced into the gas before it is distributed by the City. If you have
ever smelled this odor, you will remember what it smells like. It is similar to the odor
introduced to both propane and gasoline but is distinctive to natural gas. It is similar to
the odor of rotten eggs but not as nauseating.
Just remember that natural gas is safe unless, for one reason or another it is leaking
into a closed area; then it is very dangerous.
This City of Perry puts enough odorant into its gas to assure that you will smell the gas
long before it becomes dangerous. When you smell it, however, do not waste time.
Report it immediately to the City Hall.
