Stress doesn't
cause pains
and aches
You wake up in the morning
feeling fine, but as you walk into
work you start to feeling that
tightness in your back and neck.
The first few hours seem to go by
easily. After your weekly meeting
with the boss, that neck tightness
turns into a blistering headache.
Even your shoulders start to ache
and feel like they weigh 2 tons
each. You walk back into your
office only to find out that none of
the assignments you've delegated
have been completed. Now that
lower back tightness turns into a
stabbing pain and shoots to your
hip. It's the end of the day and you
think "If only I could get a different
job", "If only my boss wasn't so
demanding", "This stress is causing
all my problems". Right!? Well,
no.
Back in the early 80's popular
psychology brought us the term
"stress". Pretty soon every ailment
known to mankind was some how
linked to stress. While stress is an
important fact to be considered, we
have turned to blaming everything
on stress. "How can it be", you
may say, that I feel fine when I'm
on vacation and as soon as I get
stressed out again, all my pain
returns? Doesn't this mean stress is
causing my pain? Again, to put it
simple, the answer is no.
Let's look at what stress is.
Stress is any event that elicits a
response from the body. Some
events that are stressful to you may
not bother someone else. For
instance, going on a family
vacation might relieve all your
"stresses" but for someone else, it
might cause incredible amounts of
"stress". That person probably
couldn't wait till they got back
home.
However, it happens, events
occur in lives that we react to in a
negative fashion. All of us have
these, so why is it that one person
can endure the same negative stress
you have and not feel pain or aches.
This is the key. What makes your
body different from the person who
suffers no ill effects. More likely
than not, your body has physical
problems that the other person
doesn't have. Stress didn't cause
your pain or aches, it merely
brought them out. Those physical
problems were always there, they
just didn't show symptoms until
the daily stress took those weak
links to their limit.
Again stress causes nothing, it
merely tests your body.
Unfortunately, physical problems
force some of us to give in before
the stress leaves.
