HODAC is expanding its services to help needy mothers
The Houston Drug Action
Council, Inc. (HODAC) is pleased
to announce that it is expanding its
community services within the near
future. A need exists in Houston
County to provide temporary
housing for mothers and mothers
to-be who have recently completed
a treatment program for substance
abuse and who now find themselves
to be without adequate living
accommodations. HODAC intends
to assist those individuals to the
maximum extent possible.
The facility located at 2764
Watson Blvd., which is
immediately adjacent to HODAC,
was formerly a personal care home.
The facility was vacated several
weeks ago and HODAC was
interested in gaining access to it.
The property was for sale but
Great weather has helped Vidalia onions
The much-feared bitter winter
never came for Vidalia onion
growers, nor did the killer spring
storm.
Neither, for that matter, did the
opposite weather: the unseasonably
mild winter that presents onion
growers a whole other set of
problems.
This time, the weather favored
the onions all the way to harvest.
And with 75 percent of the crop
harvested going into the final week
of May, Vidalia onion lovers may
end up considering this year's crop a
vintage year.
"Overall the onion crop in
Montgomery County looks, I
believe, as good as I've ever seen,"
said David Curry, a county agent
with the University of Georgia
Extension Service.
Ga. Governor
proclaims June
as bank month
Gov. Zell Miller has joined
more than half of his colleagues
across the United States in
proclaiming June as Community
Banking Month in Georgia. This
celebration marks the first year
America's community bankers have
made a combined effort to educate
the public about the important
economic and social roles their
banks play in our nation's cities and
towns.
"We're delighted that the
governor recognizes the importance
of community banking in Georgia,"
says Julian Hester, Executive
Director and CEO of the
Community Bankers Association of
Georgia. CBA and its 331 member
banks throughout Georgia are
planning a variety of activities and
promotions during the month using
the theme, "Community banks help
their communities grow."
The highlight of the month-long
celebration occurs when executives
and members of the national State
Independent Bankers Association
converge on Washington, D.C., on
June 14-15. More than 250
community bankers are expected to
gather in our nation's capitol for the
two-day meeting, which will focus
on congressional visits geared
toward telling the story of
community banking.
Last year, community banks in
Georgia spent nearly S4O billion
combined for commercial and
industrial loans, agricultural loans,
and real estate loans. Georgia
independent community banks
employ more than 16,800 full-time
workers in their efforts to provide
the quality customer service needed
to help their communities grow and
prosper.

HODAC did not have the funds to
purchase it Recognizing the need
for a home to be provided for those
who have completed a treatment
program and who may be about to
lose custody of their children or
who may be shortly giving birth to
a child who will be bom addicted,
HODAC, and the community had
the good fortune to have a
prominent individual buy the
property for subsequent use by
HODAC. Dr. Johnny Gayton, a
well known opthamologist and
charitable benefactor, purchased the
property and has agreed to allow
HODAC access to the property for
repair purposes, etc. HODAC
intends to purchase the facility from
Dr. Gayton within 12 to 14 months
by obtaining grants which are
available for such purposes.
"The consumer can expect to see
a lot of jumbo onions," Curry said,
pointing out that the early onions
harvested had a high percentage of
hamburger-slab jumbos.
"What we've seen coming out of
our fields has been good quality,
good yield and good size," said
Randall Morris, who grows about
75 acres of the special onions. "I
think all those are things
consumers are looking for, as are
we farmers."
Farmers remember last year
when a cool snap delayed their
onion harvest, but this year, history
didn't repeat itself. The great
weather continued to give growers
the breaks they needed, with the
possible exception of the very last
of the crop.

The building has nine separate
bedrooms, adjoining bathroom
facilities, a living room, kitchen
and dining area. Because it is
situated on a one acre tract of land,
the backyard is ideal as a play area
for children. We believe we can
house approximately 15 people all
together.
Our program will be designed to
provide a community settlement
environment for select people and
allow them to transition into
society as a productive person.
HODAC will offer training
sessions on hygiene, finances,
substance abuse, etc. Employment
of the mothers will be a priority
and HODAC will assist them in
this regard. HODAC wants the
mothers to simple get their feet on
In neighboring Toombs County,
home to the town from which the
famous onions draw their name,
county Extension director Rick
Hartley said only the very latest
planted onions have had less than
ideal weather.
The hot, dry weather thai
provided an ideal harvest for 90
percent of the crop may keep the
last 10 percent from reaching the
same huge size as the rest, he said.
"The bigger the onion, the
sweeter the onion,” Hartley said,
"and 90 percent of this year's crop
reached excellent size."
For the very latest-planted
onions, he said, the size may not be
quite as good as the rest "unless we
get some help from Mother Nature"
with a timely late-harvest rain.

In short, HODAC wants to restore
their self-respect and relieve the
welfare rolls. Newborn children of
substance abusing mothers are
especially in need of help and
HODAC intends to enlist the
support of the medical community
in this regard.
The project is a dream and much
needs to be done. Because of Dr.
Gayton's interest, much has already
been accomplished, but in the
coming months we will seek help
