"If there was a time when
Horida State football was coming
on the scene, that was it," said
Crowe.
Crowe said the recent reports
from Florida State about football
players getting free shopping trips
were disturbing. "It disappoints me
as an alumni and a former player
when situations like this pop up.
"What I think has changed so
much is expectations from the
fans," said Crowe. "Fans used to
think a big season was 7-4. But, in
some programs, they are satisfied
with nothing less than 12-0.
"It is a very big business. Some
times the competition is so fierce
that it is very easy to step over the
line."

Fishing statistics indicate that
the freshwater fishery of the
Savannah River is under-utilized.
The Ogeechee River supports better
than twice the number of angler
hours and trips per acre, yet fishing
success of Savannah River anglers
(fish per hour) is slightly higher.
Of the 898 organized bass tour
naments conducted statewide in
1992, only eight were held on the
Savannah River. Certain tourna
ment organizers blame this on poor
boating access, both in quantity and
quality of available ramps.

Crowe would also like to see the
players get more than Sls a month
for laundry money. Yet, he notes
that the scholarship is a pretty good
deal, allowing athletes to get a col
lege education, which he says is the
reason they are playing.
"A lot of students play football
in college," said Crowe, "but they
don't get an education. Very few
make it in the pros. They (college
players) forget what they were sup
posed to do."
"Football, today, is much more
violent than it used to be," Crowe
said, adding, however, that he
would play college football if he
had to do it over again. "I have fond
memories. It isn't right for every
one.
Crowe said that football taught
him a lot. "Probably the biggest

One such ramp on the Savannah

The Savannah River also experi
enced high water conditions in the
early 19905, despite the fact that its
flow is regulated. The beneficial ef

evident in spring fishing for red
