If I were
commissbner:
changes to the
all-star game
The Major League All-Star game
is over. This time the good guys
(National League) beat the evil em
pire 8-7.
This may have been baseball's
last big show in 1994, with the
players threatening strike and the
owners seemingly willing to give
up the revenues from the post-sea
son and 1995.
Once again, while the spectacle
was there, the all-star game showed
that changes were needed. And, if I
were commissioner, there are sev
eral changes that I would make to
the all-star game.
First, there has to be something
done about the manner the starting
teams are chosen. As it stands now,
the selection of the starting team is
a popularity contest that encourages
ballot-box stuffing. It is no longer
only the city of Chicago that tells
voters to "vote early and vote
often;" but, also Major League
baseball.
I'm not saying eliminate fan vot
ing; but, there has to be a balance
found. Perhaps the fans vote should
count one-third, a player’s vote one
third and a managers/owners vote
one-third.
Or, what I would like to see, is
that all three groups vote on the
team, with top vote getters in each
position from each group being
named to the team. Let's say, for a
moment, that the fans voted for
Fred McGriff for the all-star team,
the players Andres Galarraga and
management Jeff Bagwell. All three
players would be named to the all
star team. The balance of the team
would be named by the manager of
the all-star team.
Which brings up a second
change: the numbers of players on
the teams need to be increased. 1
think, at this point, we need to re
member that the all-star team is not
the Hall of Fame, nor is it a collec
tion of future Hall of Famers. It is
a collection of players who are, or
who should be, having very good or
great seasons.
If you did the voting the way
that I think the voting needed to be
done, than the all-star teams would
have to be expanded to put all the
;different players that could be
named on the team. I also like the
idea that each team in the Major
Leagues get at least one player on
the all-star team, and there are 14
teams in each league.
How many players should be on
each team? I would like to see 30
position players and 15 pitchers
named to the all-star teams. That
would give enough room to allow
each team a person on the team, to
allow the three voting groups their
choice on the team and to allow the
leagues to honor life-time all-stars,
those players who will probably be
in the Hall of Fame in less than a
decade, but who were at the end of
their careers and did not make the
all-star game on performance.
And, when you really stop to
think about it, 45 players are not
that many players. Remember there
are 14 teams in each league. There
will only be an average of three
players going to the team.
With 30 position players, there
should be no problem getting a
Ryne Sandberg on the team, or no
players like Galarraga being left off
the team. Of course, there is no
way to eliminate the gripes of be
ing left off the team unless every
one was put on the all-star team;
but, this move would eliminate
most of the legitimate gripes.
Each position in baseball, first
base, secondbase, etc., would re
ceive no less than two players. Cer
tainly the top two players at each
position in the league should go to
the all-star game. There would be a
limit on outfielders to 10, since

Rozar Park and Crcckwood Park
survived the flood last week in great
condition, said Perry Parks and
Recreation director Ben Hamrick.
At Rozar Park, the two ponds
went over their banks, but did not
do any damage to the construction
going on at the new community
center or other facilities at the park.
Hamrick said water reached the pic
nic tables along Keith Drive before
they receded.
Only one major facility was
flooded, the ball field next to Perry
Middle School. Floods at the field
forced the postponement of the
Perry A's double header Sunday.
Hamrick added that despite the
bad weather and flood, construction
at the community center is still on
schedule. The community center
will be the home of the Older
Americans Council and the Perry
Parks and Recreation Department.
The center is scheduled to open in
Nov., 1994.
Donations are still needed to pay
for construction on the new center.
People interested in donating to
wards the center can contact the
Parks and Recreation Department at

Clarification
In the July 13 issue of the
Houston Times-Journal, the pitch
ing statistics of Stephen Baxter and
Brandon Spainhour were left out of
the account of the Ochlahatchee
Junior League Baseball Tournament
championship game.
Baxter started for Harold's
Amoco against Crossroads. He
pitched two-and-one-third innings of
no-hit baseball. He gave up one hit,
while striking out four. He allowed
the first Crossroads' run, and was
not involved in the decision.
Spainhour closed the game,
pitching four-and-two-thirds inning.
In his time on the mound, he gave
up two hits and one walk. He
struck out nine batters, including
the final three Crossroads' batters to
bat in the bottom of the seventh to
end the game. He gave up one run,
earned, and was credited with the
win.

Nathan Skinner led the way for Crossroads at the

Rice (.415) and Jimmy Gray (.405) also hit better than
.400 for Crossroads, while Phillip Gentry and Joey
Parker both hit .380, just missing .400.
In addition to his bat, Gray was the leading pitcher
for Crossroads this year. He was 8-1, threw to
shutouts, including one no-hitter, and had one game
where he struck out all 18 batters.
Crossroads manager Gene Owens said that his team
won the championship by manufacturing runs, noting
that all four homers hit by Crossroads were solo shots.
"I am super-proud of them," said Owens.

The lloods of 1994 will leave
their mark on Georgia for many
lifetimes to come.
Never, in my 51 years, have I
seen such a happening. All you
have to do is look in one direction
or another to see just how much
damage water can do.
Right here in our own area, not
only are we able to look at damage
done to homes, but also to farm
lands, roads and bridges.
Also, there is the total loss of
many ponds and lakes. This loss
will also take years to bring back to
a condition even close to what it
once was.
In Peach, Houston, Macon and
Pulaski counties, the total number
of farm ponds that were lost is un
believable. Houston Lake, Lake
Joy, Lake Juliette, High Falls and
Lake Blackshear have been all but
wiped out.
