Strickland marks 20th year of practice
BY PAULINE LEWIS
Staff Writer
Dr. W. Edward Strickland, a
native of Albany, Georgia, set up
private practice in a trailer on the
Perry Hospital grounds, Perry,
Georgia,
In September 1975, and moved
to his present location at 1119
Morningside Drive, in 1978. He
became Chief of Obstetrics Services
at Perry Hospital in 1975, a
position which he now holds, and,
in the past, has served as Chief of
Staff.
He is a graduate of Albany High
School, went co-op to Georgia
Tech 1960-’62, where he held a
swimming record for two years,
won the state free-style back stroke,
and played football. He transferred
to Emory University in 1962 and
from there went to the Medical
College of Georgia in Augusta.
He interned at Macon Hospital
1966-’67, where he delivered 13
babies within one night (since then,
he has delivered one set of triplets).
In 1967-’69, he was with the
Association of Southern Florida
Medical School in Orlando, and
went to Greenville, S. C., for his
first year of residency.
He served in the Army at Fort
Gordon for two years (1970-1972)
at his request, and was in Phcnix,
Alabanafrom 1972-’75).
He said that he completed 12
years of formal education up
through high school, 4 years of
college, 1 year of internship, 3
years of residency, 2 years of
military, for a total of 22 years of
education prior to starting private
practice.
His work also includes pre-natal
care, and at least one walk-in per

flood. The floods have been
devastating, yet everyone in Perry
has pulled together to resist the
forces of Mother Nature.”
Edward D. Jones & Co. has a
long-standing tradition of providing
financial assistance to the
communities where it does business
that are affected by natural disasters.
In 1993, when flooding plagued the
Midwest, Edward D. Jones & Co.
donated $300,000 to more than 70
communities throughout the
Midwest where the firm has
branches.
In addition, the firm contributed
SIOO,OOO to the St. Louis area
chapter of the American Red Cross
and SIOO,OOO to the St. Louis area
month in labor with no pre-natal
care.
“There have been many changes
in technology”, he said, “such as
ultrasound used for fetal heart
monitoring, medicines and
antibiotics which are eradicating
some diseases once considered life
threatening, but which now allow
the patient to be up and about
within a few days.
Insurance companies now want
doctors to have the patient up and
about on the day of surgery, up and
about three days after a c-section or
hysterectomy, and in one day for
normal deliveries.
Health maintenance
organizations have come to the
forefront. Malpractice insurance is
$39,000.00 per year. Other factors
doctors must consider are AAA,
realty changes, pre-certification, and
the necessity to join organizations.
It takes from 20-40 hours to keep
up with changes and updates, tests
and meetings.
“We have to practice defensive
medicaid. We test for Down’s
syndrome or neural problems from
15-18 weeks, normally,” he said.
For relaxation, Dr. Strickland
likes to play golf; he also likes to
hunt from Alaska to Florida and is
known for his marksmanship. Two
of his deer netted him 160 points.
He has five children. One son,
Wes, is regional manager of
Johnson & Johnson in Cincinnati,
Ohio; daughter Shannon is a social
worker in Cleveland, Ohio; and son
Cole is in the U.S. Marines at
Cherry Point, N.C. All three are
married.
Strickland’s daughter, Amy,
lives in Perry, works and attends
classes at Mercer at night. At
Salvation Army.
The brokerage also made a
leadership gift of $300,000 for the
restoration of the Katy Trail, the
longest hikinh and biking trail in
America. In total, the firm donated
SBOO,OOO to flood relief efforts last
year.
Tracing its roots to 1871,
Edward D. Jones & Co. has more
than 3,000 offices in 49 states. It is
the largest financial services firm in
the nation in terms of number of
offices, and its representatives serve
individual investors exclusively.
The local office is located at 1023
Ball St.
