August is time to work in the garden
August temperatures haven’t
cooled off that much from those
July blazers, but every little bit
helps, I guess. Even though the
vegetable harvest “rush” is over,
there are plenty of other things to
do this month (if it quits raining
long enough). Allow me to sug
gest a few of these.
Cuttings of woody shrubs can be
rooted now. Some evergreens
commonly rooted by this method
are azaleas, camellias, hollies, li
gustrum, and red tip photinias. De
ciduous shrubs that root well from
cuttings include crape myrtle, hy
dranagea, viburnun and forsythia.
Cuttings of these can be taken now
or after the leaves fall.
In about six weeks after stick
ing, the cuttings should form cal
louses on the bottom where the cut
was made. Roots should follow in
about a month. After roots have
formed, lake the new plants and
transplant them into small contain
ers. Grow them until you are ready
to place them outside.
Roses can be rooted from cut
tings taken this month, also. Us
ing a sharp knife, take 6-9-inch cut
tings; remove all but the top three
or four leaves and insert into well
drained soil in a spot with bright,
indirect sunlight. Water them well
and firm the soil around each cut
ting. Water as needed to keep the
soil moist. Next spring, transplant
the new rose to its permanent loca
tion.
Extra large rose bushes should
be pruned back for better fall flower
production. Continue to feed and
water the plants regularly and spray
to control insects and diseases.
Gladiolus corms should be dug
as soon as the foliage starts to die
down. After digging, place them in
a cool, dry, and dark place until
next May when you can replant
them.
Garden mums should be getting
ready to bloom in about a month,
so for maximum flower production,
apply a complete fertilizer at one
pound per 100 feet of row now. To
produce larger flowers on mums,
pinch out all side buds, leaving

something that Peak wants to do
quietly, and without bells and whis
tles. Even though there is a public
relations value to the program, this
is not a publicity ploy by the hos
pital. It is a service to the commu
nity, a seemingly rare commodity
in the health care field today.
It is good that the hospital sees
itself as a corporate citizen, and
takes its responsibilities seriously
in the community. That is what
this program does.
