School
lunches
altered?
By VETO F. ROLEY
Statf Writer
Lunch at Perry schools might
become completely different in the
next few years if Jcanine Johnson,
director of school nutrition, has
anything to do with it.
Johnson told the Houston
County Board of Education during
its regular meeting Tuesday, Aug.
9, that she wanted to expand the
menus at the school, while increas
ing the quality of the food served.
In the high schools, Johnson
said that she envisioned a time
when students could choose be
tween six and eight entrees, com
pleting their meal with separate
dishes of vegetables, fruit and
desert. One of the entree lines
would be a fast food/pizza line.
Students in the middle school
would be able to choose between
four and six entrees, completing
their meal also with separate dishes
of vegetables, fruit and desert.
In order to teach the students
how to choose healthy foods, John
son said that she would like to start
a nutrition program, starting with
the elementary schools.
Board chairman Zell Blackmon
indicated his approval of the direc
tion Johnson was taking with the
school lunch program, noting that
it didn't matter "if they (students)
don’t eat it."
The board also approved the fis
cal year 1995 budget for the school
lunch program of $4.84 million,
down from the 1994 budget of
$4.95 million. The fiscal year runs
from July thru June.
The majority of the budget will
go for salaries and benefits, with
employees getting $1,975 million.
Johnson said she planned to add
some employees to lunchrooms
that were understaffed. The money
also includes a four percent cost of
living increase.
Another $1.6 million has been
budgeted for the cost of food. In
1994, the school system purchased
$1.5 million in food. Johnson said
the increase in the amount of food
was due to the fact that she wanted
to buy a better quality of food.
Johnson's budget also includes
$550,000 for the purchase of new
equipment, $200,000 for an
equipment reserve, $175,000 for
supplies and SIOO,OOO for the pur
chase of computers.
